Remarriage after divorce: recent changes and demographic variations.

Using data from US Bureau of the Census publications from the decennial censuses and the Bureau's Current Population Reports, the authors analyze remarriage in the US. Among adults who had ended their 1st marriage in divorce, about 3/4 of the elderly men and 2/3 of the elderly women in both 1970 and 1980 were found to be remarried. However, the general decline in remarriage at the younger ages during the 1970s was accentuated among those under 35 years old. Although the proportion remarried among women with graduate school training was the smallest, that proportion declined less during the 197…

Demography of Amboseli baboons, 1963-1983.

Repeated censuses of a population of yellow baboons (Papio cynocephalus) in Amboseli National Park, Kenya, revealed a decrease from over 2,500 animals in 1963-1964 to 123 individuals in 1979, or from a density of about 73 to 1.8 baboons per km2 over a 15-year period. Median group size decreased from 43 in 1964 to 27 in 1979. The largest and smallest groups declined the most; groups near the median have maintained fairly stable size and age distributions. The population seemed to have stabilized by 1983 at approximately 150 animals in six groups (median group size 28; density 2.2/km2). Although…

Exploring the Child Functioning Module in Multiple Surveys in Ghana and Niger.

The Washington Group/UNICEF Child Functioning Module (CFM) represents progress in identifying and measuring disability among children and adolescents in censuses and surveys. This paper reports from a study among school children in Ghana and Niger aimed at investigating the stability in assessment using CFM over time and across different respondents. Four surveys and one mapping exercise using teachers and households/parents as proxies were implemented among primary school children in Ghana and Niger in 2022-2023. The surveys included CFM and variables intended to generate new knowledge about …

A congeneric and non-randomly associated pair of larval trematodes dominates the assemblage of co-infecting parasites in fathead minnows (Pimephales promelas).

Individual hosts are often co-infected with multiple parasite species. Evidence from theoretical and empirical studies supports the idea that co-occurring parasites can impact each other and their hosts via synergistic or antagonistic interactions. The fundamental aim of understanding the consequences of co-infection to hosts and parasites requires an understanding of patterns of species co-occurrence within samples of hosts. We censused parasite assemblages in 755 adult, male fathead minnows collected from 7 lakes/ponds in southern Alberta, Canada between 2018 and 2020. Fifteen species of end

Race Matters: Income Shares, Income Inequality, and Income Mobility for All U.S. Races.

Using unique linked data, we examine income inequality and mobility across racial and ethnic groups in the United States. Our data encompass the universe of income tax filers in the United States for the period 2000-2014, matched with individual-level race and ethnicity information from multiple censuses and American Community Survey data. We document both income inequality and mobility trends over the period. We find significant stratification in terms of average incomes by racial/ethnic group and distinct differences in within-group income inequality. The groups with the highest incomes-whit…

Socioeconomic factors in cancer in Sweden.

It is well known that certain cancers have shown clustering in socioeconomic groups, but limited data are available on recent results and time trends in such clustering. We determined standardized incidence ratios (SIR) for cancer, adjusted for age, period, region, parity and age at first childbirth among men and women in 6 socioeconomic groups based on the Swedish Family-Cancer Database. Persons had to be identified with the same socioeconomic status in the census of years 1960 and 1970, or of years 1960, 1970 and 1980; the comparison group was all people according to the same censuses. Cance…

Cattle migration and stocking densities in relation to tsetse-trypanosomiasis challenge in The Gambia.

The local migration of village N'Dama cattle between two study sites, Niamina East and Bansang, 40 km apart in the inland region of The Gambia, West Africa, is described. The consequences of seasonal variations in local stocking densities on the epidemiology of African animal trypanosomiasis are reported. Tsetse abundance at each study site was monitored throughout the study period from trap catches, and cattle censuses at each site were carried out on a monthly basis. Detailed ecological, productivity and health data, including dietary intake and trypanosomiasis prevalence, were collected fro…

Polio field census and vaccination of underserved populations--northern Nigeria, 2012-2013.

In 2012, the World Health Assembly declared completion of polio eradication a public health emergency. However, wild poliovirus (WPV) transmission remains endemic in three countries (Afghanistan, Nigeria, and Pakistan). In Nigeria, the National Stop Transmission of Polio (N-STOP) program, under the umbrella of the Nigerian Field Epidemiology and Laboratory Training Program (FELTP), has been developed to implement innovative strategies that address the remaining polio eradication challenges in Nigeria. One N-STOP initiative focuses on locating and vaccinating children aged<5 years in remote nom

Higher income and uninsured: common or rare?

Massachusetts plans to penalize those who do not have health insurance, targeting higher-income people. Are higher-income Americans a small or substantial share of the uninsured? The U.S. Census Bureau reports that one in three Americans without health insurance lived in a household with income greater than $50,000 in 2005. Many of these higher-income uninsured people do not fit the profile of free-riders who have the money but are unwilling to buy coverage. A majority have lower incomes but live with others; only together are they higher income. For others, higher income or lack of insurance

The UK kidney association 2025 academic census: a national survey to identify workforce improvements.

BACKGROUND: Academic nephrology underpins innovation, translation, and the training of the future kidney workforce, yet there is growing concern that its capacity in the UK is fragile. Increasing clinical service pressures, limited protected academic time, fragmented career pathways, and challenges in recruitment and retention threaten the sustainability of the academic kidney workforce, prompting the UK Kidney Association (UKKA) to undertake a national Academic Census to systematically define these barriers and identify priorities for workforce improvement. METHODS: The anonymous survey was c

Decline in the surgical workforce in urban and rural Japan and the regional quota system as a potential solution to surgeon shortages.

PURPOSE: This study examined the decline in the number of surgeons in Japan compared with other specialists in urban and rural areas using a secondary analysis of government-owned census data. Furthermore, it evaluated the impact of the regional quota system in addressing the shortage of surgeons by comparing their proportion among the graduates of this system with that of the overall physician population. METHODS: We analyzed national census data (2012-2022) to evaluate trends in the numbers of physicians and surgeons in 47 prefectures from urban and rural groups. Data on regional quota grad

Mortality by occupation-based social class in Italy from 2012 to 2014.

OBJECTIVES: Evaluating socio-economic inequality in cause-specific mortality among the working population requires large cohort studies. Through this census-based study, we aimed to quantify disparities in mortality across occupation-based social classes in Italy. METHODS: We conducted a historical cohort study on a sample of more than 16 million workers. We estimated the mortality rate ratios for each social class, considering upper non-manual workers as reference. RESULTS: Non-skilled manual workers showed an increased mortality from upper aero-digestive tract, stomach and liver cancers, a

Population mixing, socioeconomic status and incidence of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukaemia in England and Wales: analysis by census ward.

In this population-based study of acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) diagnosed among children aged under 15 years in England and Wales during 1986-1995, we analysed incidence at census ward level in relation to a range of variables from the 1991 census, which could be relevant to theories of infectious aetiology. 'Population-mixing' measures, used as surrogates for quantity and diversity of infections entering the community, were calculated from census data on the origins and destinations of migrants in the year before the census. Incidence at ages 1-4 years tended independently to be higher
