Parenting stress and its relationship to child health care.

This study examined the relationship between the level of parental stress (Parenting Stress Index) experienced by mothers of children during their child's second year of life and the frequency and appropriateness of the health care they obtained for their child. No systematic relationships were found between the amount or medical necessity of the pediatric health care obtained in relation to maternal stress for this largely middle class population. Contrary to clinical folklore, these mothers were able to appropriately separate their decision making regarding seeking health care for their chil

Parental smoking. Its effects on fetus and child health.

Smoking is a risk factor in pregnancy. Maternal smoking reduces the birthweight by 150-250 g (dose-response relationship), shifting the birthweight (and length) distribution to the left. Reduction of birthweight without shortening of gestation creates a group of small-for-date babies. Intrauterine hypoxia seems responsible for the growth retardation in smokers' babies as in babies of mothers living at high altitudes. Cigarette smoking of the mother affects fetal oxygenation, due to high levels of COHb in the blood of both mother and child. This observation is strongly supported by animal exper

Trends in inequality in maternal and child health and health care in Uganda: Analysis of the Uganda demographic and health surveys.

BACKGROUND: Uganda has made great strides in improving maternal and child health. However, little is known about how this improvement has been distributed across different socioeconomic categories, and how the health inequalities have changed over time. This study analyses data from Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS) conducted in 2006, 2011, and 2016 in Uganda, to assess trends in inequality for a variety of mother and child health and health care indicators. METHODS: The indicators studied are acknowledged as critical for monitoring and evaluating maternal and child health status. These in…

The Ontario Child Health Study: social adjustment and mental health of siblings of children with chronic health problems.

There has been controversy concerning the type and amount of psychosocial maladjustment among the siblings of children with chronic physical health problems and disabilities. Most previous studies have been conducted in clinical populations, often from tertiary care centers. This paper reports the risks of psychiatric disorders and social adjustment problems of the siblings of chronically ill children found in the Ontario Child Health Study (OCHS). The OCHS was a general population survey of 3,294 children, 4-16 years of age, living in 1,869 randomly selected families in the Province of Ontari…

Study protocol - the Australian National Child hearing Health Outcomes Registry (ANCHOR): collecting and connecting national data into a child deafness Learning Health System.

BACKGROUND: Despite early identification of deafness through universal newborn hearing screening, deaf and hard of hearing children can still face inequitable challenges in their development and life opportunities. Large scale registries, collecting standardised information on all individuals in a population with the relevant condition, can reveal variations in practices, processes, and outcomes, and identify targets for improvement. For childhood deafness, where care delivery spans multiple service sectors, data linkage is the only feasible way to bring data together. Data linkage also minimi

Climate change and child health: The growing burden of climate-related adverse health outcomes.

Climate change is increasingly recognized not only as an environmental issue but also as a major public health threat, becoming more evident through the rising frequency and intensity of extreme weather events. Immediate exposure to climate-related hazards-such as extreme heat, wildfires, storms, and floods-results in direct health impacts, while indirect effects emerge through ecosystem disruptions and socioeconomic shifts. Climate change can introduce or intensify health risks in regions that were previously unaffected. Effective monitoring of climate-related health developments enables publ

The nation's leading sources of morbidity and health disparities (eg, preterm birth, obesity, chronic lung disease, cardiovascular disease, … ervices. Children of parents with higher literacy skills are more likely to have better outcomes in child health promotion and disease prevention. Adult studies in disease prevention have suggested that addressing health literacy would be an efficacious strategy for reducing health disparities. Future initiatives to reduce child health inequities should includ …

Mental Health Admissions in Child and Adolescents Over Pandemic Period: A Health Records Study.

OBJECTIVE: The emergence of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic led to numerous changes worldwide. Due to restrictive measures, hospital admission patterns changed in child and adolescent psychiatry, as in all other medical specialties. Although there are studies investigating the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on mental health, research examining the reasons for hospital admissions and changing trends among children and adolescents remains limited. METHODS: This study used data from the hospital information system of a university hospital and included patients aged 0-18 years.

Developing a Theoretical Framework for a Complex Maternal-Child Health Intervention: Health Beginning Initiative.

A theoretical framework serves as a roadmap for the implementation and application of a complex, health promotion intervention; is used to test hypotheses; and guides analysis and evaluation of the intervention. The purpose of this article is to demonstrate how a theoretical framework was developed and used to guide the implementation of Healthy Beginning Initiative (HBI) to promote uptake of HIV services in a low-income country. We used the guide for developing a theoretical framework published in Health Promotion Practice. Developing the theoretical framework included seven steps: (1) identi

Mapping Neighborhood Health Geomarkers To Clinical Care Decisions To Promote Equity In Child Health.

Health disparities, which can be understood as disadvantages in health associated with one's social, racial, economic, or physical environment, originate in childhood and persist across an individual's life course. One's neighborhood may drive or influence these disparities. Information on neighborhoods that can characterize their risks-what we call place-based risks-is rarely used in patient care. Community-level data, however, could inform and personalize interventions such as arranging for mold removal from the home of a person with asthma from the moment that person's address is recorded a

The relevance of U.S. Ratification of the Convention on the Rights of the Child for Child Health: a matter of equity and social justice.

The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) is a universally accepted tool to understand the social underpinnings of child health that medicine alone cannot address. Injustices plague U.S. society: Child poverty has been increasing since 2000, and the gap between the wealthiest and poorest is growing. Poverty is a toxic stress on child health and well-being. Three articles from the CRC help frame how to address this: nondiscrimination, the right to enjoy the highest attainable standard of health and access to health care, and the right to a standard of living adequate for co…

Joint NPSP is a prevention program for child abuse, screening all pregnant military families in Hawaii. The instrument used in this study was the Child Abuse Potential Inventory (CAP), a reliable and valid instrument used in the screening of phys

Editorial: National Trends in Child Mental Health Disorders Signal Opportunities and Challenges for Precision Child Psychiatry.

Improving access to child mental health care is a national priority area. The US Department of Health and Human Services, through the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), recently awarded $68.5 million in grants that support behavioral health education, training and community programs to help address mental health and substance use conditions.1 One of the 4 guiding principles of SAMHSA's 2023-2026 Strategic Plan is a commitment to data and evidence to inform resource allocation, with priority on timely, high-quality data.2 The Behavioral Health Services Informati
