On June 27, 2011, a worker at a poultry processing plant in Arkansas began to pour sodium hypochlorite into a 55-gallon drum that contained residual acidic antimicrobial solution. When the sodium hypochlorite reacted with the solution, greenish-yellow chlorine gas was released into the small room where the drum was located and then spread into the plant, where approximately 600 workers were present. These workers promptly were evacuated. Chlorine is a respiratory irritant and can produce symptoms ranging from mild eye, nose, and throat irritation to severe inflammation of the lung, which can l…

On June 8, 2010, chlorine gas was released from a ruptured, 1-ton, low-pressure tank being recycled at a California metal recycling facility. A total of 23 persons, including employees, customers, and workers at nearby businesses, were treated for the effects of the fumes at seven area hospitals. Chlorine is a corrosive, greenish-yellow gas that is heavier than air and can cause severe respiratory damage; it is used widely in water purification, sewage treatment, and disinfectant washes for foods. Following the incident, the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) and CDC coll…

Chlorine (Cl(2)) is a reactive oxidant gas used extensively in industrial processes. Exposure of both humans and animals to high concentrations of Cl(2) results in acute lung injury, which may resolve spontaneously or progress to acute respiratory failure. Injury to airway and alveolar epithelium may result from chemical reactions of Cl(2), from HOCl (the hydrolysis product of Cl(2)), and/or from the various reaction products, such as chloramines, that are formed from the reactions of these chlorinating species with biological molecules. Subsequent reactions may initiate self-propagating react…

Recent laboratory measurements of the absorption cross sections of the ClO dimer, ClOOCl, have called into question the validity of the mechanism that describes the catalytic removal of ozone by chlorine. Here we describe direct measurements of the rate-determining step of that mechanism, the production of Cl atoms from the photolysis of ClOOCl, under laboratory conditions similar to those in the stratosphere. ClOOCl is formed in a cold-temperature flowing system, with production initiated by a microwave discharge of Cl(2) or photolysis of CF(2)Cl(2). Excimer lasers operating at 248, 308, and …

Fractionation of dichloromethane (DCM) molecules with different chlorine isotopes by aerobic methylobacteria Methylobacterium dichloromethanicum DM4 and Albibacter nethylovorans DM10; cell-free extract of strain DM4; and transconjugant Methylobacterium evtorquens Al1/pME 8220, expressing the dcmA gene for DCM dehalogenase but unable to grow on DCM, was studied. Kinetic indices of DCM isotopomers for chlorine during bacterial dehalogenation and diffusion were compared. A two-step model is proposed, which suggests diffusional DCM transport to bacterial cells.

Chlorine gas inhalation, similar to other toxic gas exposures, can impart a variety of effects to the entire airway ranging from mucous membrane irritation to acute respiratory distress syndrome. The extent and location of damage is determined by numerous situational factors such as the duration of exposure, quantity of gas released, environmental factors, and instituted chemical defense measures. Reactive airways dysfunction and nonspecific bronchial hyperresponsiveness are commonly reported as sequelae to chlorine exposure. This article constitutes the first case of a single antecedent chlor…

Catalytic hydrogen treatment is presented as a viable low energy means of treating/detoxifying concentrated chlorinated gas streams to generate recyclable raw materials. Nickel (1.5% w/w and 15.2%) loaded silica and nickel (2.2% w/w) exchanged Y zeolite catalysts have been used to hydrotreat a range of chlorophenols (CPs), dichlorophenols (DCPs), trichlorophenols (TCPs) and pentachlorophenol (PCP) over the temperature interval 473 K</=T</=573 K. In every instance the nickel catalysts were 100% selective in cleaving the chlorine component from the ring, leaving the aromatic nucleus and hydroxyl…

This study was designed to investigate the pathogenesis of chlorine gas (Cl2) induced acute lung injury and oedema. Isolated blood-perfused rabbit lungs were ventilated either with air (n=7) or air plus 500 parts per million (ppm) of Cl2 (n=7) for 10 min. Capillary pressure, measured by analysing the pressure/time transients of pulmonary arterial, venous and double (both arterial and venous) occlusions, was unchanged in both groups. In Cl2-exposed lungs, the fluid filtration rate increased from -0.228+/-0.25 to 1.823+/-1.23 mL min(-1) x 100 g(-1) (p<0.001) and the filtration coefficient increa…

In this two year retrospective review, 86 cases of chlorine gas inhalation from 49 medical facilities were treated with nebulized sodium bicarbonate on the recommendation of the Kentucky Regional Poison Center. Typical manifestations included cough, chest discomfort, shortness of breath, and wheezing. No patients developed pulmonary edema or respiratory insufficiency requiring ventilatory support. Sixty-three cases (73.3%) were exposures to chlorine producing acid/hypochlorite mixtures. Six (7.0%) were exposed to chlorine gas in industrial settings. Twelve (14.0%) were exposed to chlorine gas …

Twenty previously healthy individuals were accidentally exposed to high concentrations of chlorine gas in 1975. Pulmonary function tests were performed on these individuals on several occasions over the next 12 years. On average, each subject was followed up for 8.5 years and 13 of the 20 exposed persons were tested 12 years following the exposure. Pulmonary function tests obtained one day following the accident were most notable for the high prevalence of airflow obstruction and air trapping. Over the ensuing years, the airflow obstruction persisted; however, the high prevalence of air trappi…

Chlorite, a by-product of chlorine dioxide disinfection of water, is a strong oxidant compound that produces markedly exaggerated effects in vitro on red cells of G6PD deficient humans when compared to normal human cells. Levels of methemoglobin are significantly greater and GSH levels significantly lower in the G6PD deficient cells than in normal cells after chlorite exposure. Persons with G6PD deficiency may be 3 to 4 times more likely to develop hemolytic anemia from chlorite exposure as persons with normal activity levels when GSH levels are used as a measure of susceptibility. The propose…

Chlorine-resistant Legionella pneumophila, the causative agent of fatal pneumonia, poses a major global public health threat. However, the mechanistic basis for this pathogen's resistance evolution remains elusive. Our study demonstrates that a minimally dormant or the early stages of viable but non-culturable (VBNC) state of bacteria is critical to chlorine tolerance development, representing an initial stage of resistance acquisition. Prolonged low-dose chlorination (12 h exposure to 2 mg/L chloramine-T) induced VBNC transformation in L. pneumophila, with a resuscitation lag time ∼10-fold lo…

Chlorine is a toxic industrial chemical with a history of use as a chemical weapon. Chlorine is also produced, stored, and transported in bulk making it a high-priority pulmonary threat in the USA. Due to the high reactivity of chlorine, few biomarkers exist to identify exposure in clinical and environmental samples. Our laboratory evaluates acute chlorine exposure in clinical samples by measuring 3-chlorotyrosine (Cl-Tyr) and 3,5-dichlorotyrosine (Cl2-Tyr) using liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). Individuals can have elevated biomarker levels due to their environment a…

To evaluate the antibiofilm activity of a chlorine-releasing solution (CRS) and its in vitro effects on enamel color stability, surface roughness, and microhardness. A mixed biofilm composed of Staphylococcus aureus, Candida albicans, and Streptococcus mutans was formed on standardized bovine enamel specimens (6 × 6 × 2 mm). After 48 h of maturation, the specimens were immersed for 5 min in CRS (Granudacyn, Mölnlycke Health Care), 0.12% chlorhexidine (CHX, positive control), or phosphate-buffered saline (PBS, negative control). Antibiofilm activity was determined by colony-forming unit counts …

Cold-chain terminal sterilization is used for products that must be manufactured, stored, and maintained with a carefully controlled temperature range, such as temperature-sensitive drugs and vaccines in prefilled syringes or autoinjectors containing temperature-sensitive drugs. Chlorine dioxide (ClO2) is an ideal sterilant for cold-chain terminal sterilization because it forms a true gas at room temperatures (15°C/59°F - 25°C/77°F), with a reliable and consistent process, with excellent penetration, and does not require elevated temperatures. In the current study, we validated the efficacy of…
