Effects of exposure to pile-driving sounds on the lake sturgeon, Nile tilapia and hogchoker.

Pile-driving and other impulsive sound sources have the potential to injure or kill fishes. One mechanism that produces injuries is the rapid motion of the walls of the swim bladder as it repeatedly contacts nearby tissues. To further understand the involvement of the swim bladder in tissue damage, a specially designed wave tube was used to expose three species to pile-driving sounds. Species included lake sturgeon (Acipenser fulvescens)--with an open (physostomous) swim bladder, Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus)--with a closed (physoclistous) swim bladder and the hogchoker (Trinectes macul

Occurrence of spontaneous tumours of the renal proximal tubules in oscars Astronotus ocellatus.

This report describes the occurrence of renal papillary cystic adenomas and adenocarcinomas in oscars Astronotus ocellatus Cuvier, 1829. Samples from 5 oscars with abdominal swelling were collected between 1996 and 2004 and compared to a published case from the USA. Macroscopically, all cases revealed a large, well-demarcated, greyish-brown nodular mass in a retroperitoneal position within the body cavity, and originating from the posterior kidney. Histologically, these neoplasms were composed of epithelial cells, which were arranged in papillary cystic tubular structures and partly covered by

Orthology-Aware Reanalysis of Replicated Public Transcriptomes Identifies Shared and Context-Dependent Low-Temperature Responses in Teleost Fishes.

Low temperature constrains the survival and production of many cultured fishes, yet public cold-response transcriptomes differ substantially in species, developmental stage, tissue, exposure design, and genome annotation. We therefore reassessed the extent to which replicated public datasets support shared rather than universal low-temperature responses. A metadata screen identified 110 candidate BioProjects containing 1,465 runs. After manual verification of treatment relevance, sequencing platform, biological design, and read depth, 15 projects (208 runs; 10 species) were retained as a publi

Genome-wide identification and expression analysis of the SIRT gene family in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus).

The sirtuin (SIRT) family is a nicotine adenine dinucleotide (NAD+)-dependent class III histone deacetylase, which is widely involved in numerous physiological processes of organisms, such as metabolism, reproduction, and immunity. Here, based on the genomics database, comprehensive analysis of the SIRT gene in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) was analyzed using bioinformatics methods and quantitative real-time PCR. The nine SIRT genes of O. niloticus (OnSIRT) were distributed on eight chromosomes. The OnSIRTs contain distinct sequences from 3 exons in OnSIRT4 to 16 exons in OnSIRT2, howev

Urotensin II in GIFT Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus): CDS cloning, tissue distribution, and in vitro regulation of male reproduction.

The caudal neurosecretory system (CNSS), present in all jawed vertebrates, except sarcopterygians, is considered a major site of urotensin II (UII) secretion. UII, a 12-amino acid peptide with a conserved hexapeptide ring structure, is also secreted by other tissues and found in sarcopterygians. UII has been associated with endocrine regulation, osmoregulation, and several pathophysiological conditions. In this study, CDS of GIFT Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) UII (tUII) and its receptors UT1 (tUT1) and UT2 (tUT2) were cloned from the CNSS and cerebellum, respectively. Phylogenetic analy

Fermented rice polishings dietary supplementation sustainably enhanced growth performance, gut morphology, immune response and antioxidant status of Nile tilapia.

Fermentation of plant-derived by-products, including rice polishings (RP), is suggested for the sustainability of the aquafeed industry. In this study, fermented rice polishings (FRP) were incorporated into Nile tilapia diets at various levels: 0, 100, 200, 300, and 400 g/kg. Nile tilapia with an average initial weight of 19.25 ± 0.25 g/fish were divided into five groups (triplicates) and fed five test diets (R0, R10, R20, R30, and R40) for 85 days. Dietary FRP substantially increased final body weight, weight gain, specific growth rate, and protein efficiency ratio, but decreased feed convers

Effects of dietary garlic (Allium sativum) oil on growth performance, haemato-biochemical and histopathology of cypermethrin-intoxicated Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus).

BACKGROUND: When pesticides are introduced into wetlands by agriculture, fish quickly absorb them through their gills. Pesticides reduce hatchability, impede growth, and antioxidant response, killing fish. Therefore, it's crucial to find effective pesticide mitigation methods for fish. OBJECTIVE: In this study, the effects of garlic (Allium sativum) oil on the growth, haematology, biochemistry and histopathology parameters of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) exposed to cypermethrin toxicity were investigated. METHODS: In the research, cypermethrin was added to the water of the experiment

Establishing a safe anesthesia concentration window for Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) (Linnaeus 1758) by monitoring cardiac activity in eugenol immersion baths.

Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus, is the most cultivated fish species in the world, due to its low cost, high growth rate, environmental adaptability, and resistance to disease and stress. Anesthetics for fish become necessary in management because they minimize mortality during transport and maintenance of ponds, one of the most used anesthetics is clove oil, which has eugenol as the major substance, representing 90-95 % of clove oil. The present study evaluates the effect of eugenol on cardiac activity in Oreochromis niloticus specimens and relates it to behavioral data to determine a con

Copper chelating peptides derived from tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) skin as tyrosinase inhibitor: Biological evaluation, in silico investigation and in vivo effects.

Binuclear copper ions at the active site determine the catalysis of tyrosinase (TYR)1 whose activity can be inhibited by copper's chelation with other compounds. In this study, tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) skin was used to generate TYR-inhibitory peptides after being treated by different enzymes and 4 h-Alcaline protease hydrolysate exhibited the highest TYR inhibition and copper chelation. Immobilized metal affinity chromatography was used for purifying copper chelating peptides, among which PFRMY (IC50: 0.43 ± 0.08 mg/mL) and RGFTGM (IC50: 1.61 ± 0.04 mg/mL) exhibited the highest TYR-inhi

Comparative anatomical studies on the cranial nerves of the fully formed embryos of the Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus (Ostiechthyes-Cichlidae). I. Nervus glossopharyngeus.

The organization of the roots, ganglia and the peripheral distribution of the cranial nerves of the fully formed embryos of Oreochromis niloticus are examined in the transverse serial sections. These nerves carry fibers, which were also analyzed. The results of this study demonstrated that the glossopharyngeal nerve originates by means of only one root, which leaves the cranium through the glossopharyngeal foramen. This nerve gives fibers (visceromotor) to the first internal and external levator arcus branchialis muscles. There is a single epibranchial (petrosal) ganglion located extracraniall

Ecotoxicological effects of pyraclostrobin on tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) via various exposure routes.

Pyraclostrobin is a widely used and highly efficient fungicide that also has high toxicity to aquatic organisms, especially fish. Although some research has reported the toxic effects of pyraclostrobin on fish, the main toxic pathways of pyraclostrobin in fish remain unclear. The present study has integrated histopathological, biochemical and hematological techniques to reveal the main toxic pathways and mechanisms of pyraclostrobin under different exposure routes. Our results indicated that pyraclostrobin entered fish mainly through the gills. The highest accumulation of pyraclostrobin was ob

Mucosal immune response of Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus during Gyrodactylus cichlidarum infection.

Monogenean Gyrodactylus cichlidarum can cause severe mortality of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) fry. To date, reports about mucosal immunity of O. niloticus against this parasite have been rare. In order to explore the mucosal immunity of Nile tilapia against G. cichlidarum infection, the expressions of six adaptive immune-related genes and the contents of specific immunoglobulin IgM and IgT in the skin-associated lymphoid tissues (SALT) were dynamically analyzed after primary and secondary infections. The abundances of G. cichlidarum on the hosts after secondary infection were lower th

Megalocytivirus infection in cultured Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus.

Megalocytiviruses, such as infectious spleen and kidney necrosis virus (ISKNV), induce lethal systemic diseases in both ornamental and food fish species. In this study, we investigated an epizootic affecting Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus cultured in the US Midwest. Diseased fish displayed lethargy, gill pallor, and distension of the coelomic cavity due to ascites. Histopathological examination revealed a severe systemic abundance of intravascular megalocytes that were especially prominent in the gills, kidney, spleen, liver, and intestinal submucosa. Development of the islets, exocrine pancreas, and related ducts in the Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus (Pisces: Cichlidae).

Pancreatic development and the relationship of the islets with the pancreatic, hepatic, and bile ducts were studied in the Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus, from hatching to the onset of maturity at 7 months. The number of islets formed during development was counted, using either serial sections or dithizone staining of isolated islets. There was a general increase in islet number with both age and size. Tilapia housed in individual tanks grew more quickly and had more islets than siblings of the same age left in crowded conditions. The pancreas is a compact organ in early development, and

Doublecortin in the Fish Visual System, a Specific Protein of Maturing Neurons.

Doublecortin (DCX) is a microtubule associated protein, essential for correct central nervous system development and lamination in the mammalian cortex. It has been demonstrated to be expressed in developing-but not in mature-neurons. The teleost visual system is an ideal model to study mechanisms of adult neurogenesis due to its continuous life-long growth. Here, we report immunohistochemical, in silico, and western blot analysis to detect the DCX protein in the visual system of teleost fish. We clearly determined the expression of DCX in newly generated cells in the retina of the cichlid fis
