The technique of microwave irradiation, whereby enzymes are inactivated within milliseconds, was employed to accurately determine the in vivo acetylcholine (ACh) concentration in the iris-ciliary body (ICB). Rats were sacrificed by microwave irradiation at 9.5 kW at 2,450 MHz for 0.9 seconds. The eyes were enucleated, the ICBs isolated and 10 ICBs from 10 eyes were treated as one sample. PURPOSE: Laminin is a family of heterotrimeric molecules each consisting of a heavy chain (A or M chain), and two light chains (B1, B2, or S chains). In this study the distribution of these chains was determined in human ciliary body.

Uveal malignant melanoma is uncommon both in children and in black patients. There has been only one previous report of this type of tumor occurring in a black child. This paper presents the case history of a 5-year-old black girl who presented with a mass arising from the ciliary body and choroid. This was found to be a malignant melanoma on histological examination. The difficulties in diagnosis are discussed and the histological features presented.

Uveal melanoma is an uncommon cancer that is most often diagnosed in the sixth decade and is somewhat more common in males. Early detection and treatment of melanoma is important as metastasis can be fatal. A case of ciliary body melanoma that was detected in an asymptomatic patient because of extrascleral extension is presented. Signs and symptoms that may lead to the diagnosis of uveal melanoma are presented, as well as lesions that may simulate extrascleral extension of melanoma.

Melanoma involving the ciliary body is a rare tumor which carries a poor prognosis when compared to all uveal melanoma. We have treated 54 patients with ciliary body melanoma using helium ions from 1978 to 1985. Because of the high rate of metastatic disease, the 5-year disease specific survival rate is only 59% despite a 5-year local control rate of 98%. The greatest diameter of the tumor was predictive of loss of vision and enucleation (p = .05, p = .04, respectively). A predominantly benign medulloepithelioma of the ciliary body was diagnosed in an 8-year-old girl and resected by iridocyclectomy. It recurred twice during 30 months. Highly malignant histopathologic features developed, and the eye finally perforated and had to be enucleated. No recurrence or metastases have subsequently developed. In 10 eyes a direct refixation of the ciliary muscle to the scleral sporn with many 10 X 0 nylon sutures very close to each other has been performed after a traumatic cyclodialysis. In all 10 eyes the intraocular pressure could be normalized between 12 and 18 mm Hg, the visual acuity recovered in all cases and the signs of ocular hypotony disappeared at the anterior and posterior segment. Ciliary body adenocarcinomas are well-recognized tumors in dogs; however, invasion of the lens by the tumor has not been described in veterinary species. Evaluation of the right eye of a 10-year-old Labrador Retriever revealed a ciliary body mass spanning from the 10 o'clock to 2 o'clock position that was impinging on the lens.
