Human Immunodeficiency Virus Type 1 (HIV-1) infection which causes the terminal Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) is one of the major new pandemics of this millenium. This infection is believed to be a zoonosis which achieved sustained transmission among humans because of recent increases in sexual promiscuity and needle-sharing drug use. Although the HIV-1 epidemic is of relatively recent onset, its modes of transmission have been clearly defined: sexual relations, blood injection, and childbirth. Other possible transmission methods such as non-sexual social interaction and insects h

BACKGROUND: Female genital mutilation (FGM) is commonly practiced mainly in a belt reaching from East to West Africa north of the equator. The practice is known across socio-economic classes and among different ethnic, religious, and cultural groups. Few studies have been appropriately designed to measure the health effects of FGM. However, the outcome of FGM on intersex individuals has never been discussed before.
CASE PRESENTATION: The patient first presented as a female with delayed puberty. Hormonal analysis revealed a normal serum prolactin level of 215 Micro/L, a low FSH of 0.5 Micro/L,

BACKGROUND: Effective implementation strategies are needed to increase engagement in HIV services in hyperendemic settings. We conducted a pragmatic cluster-randomized trial in a high-risk, highly mobile fishing community (HIV prevalence: approximately 38%) in Rakai, Uganda, to assess the impact of a community health worker-delivered, theory-based (situated Information, Motivation, and Behavior Skills), motivational interviewing-informed, and mobile phone application-supported counseling strategy called "Health Scouts" to promote engagement in HIV treatment and prevention services.

The risk factors for the transmission of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection varies substantially between countries and geographic regions. The aim of this investigation was to determine the risk factors which may be involved in the transmission of HCV infection in the Turkish population. This study included patients who were admitted to the Department of Gastroenterohepatology, Istanbul Medical Faculty, Istanbul University, between 1996 and 2002 and found to be anti-HCV positive during hospitalization or during follow-up as outpatients. All patients were asked about risk factors for HCV transmi

OBJECTIVE: Klippel-Trenaunay-Weber syndrome (KTWS) is a congenital condition characterized by vascular malformations of the capillary, venous and lymphatic systems associated to soft tissue and bone hypertrophy in the affected areas. This syndrome may involve bladder, kidney, urethra, ureter and genitals. We report the treatment of 7 KTWS patients with urogenital involvement.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: From 1995 to 2005, 7 patients with KTWS were evaluated and the charts of these patients were reviewed.
RESULTS: Patients' median age was 19-years (range 4 to 46-years) and only 1 was female. The c

INTRODUCTION: The incidence of recurrent urinary tract infection (UTI) in children with primary vesico-ureteric reflux (VUR) presenting symptomatically is well documented. The risk of UTI in asymptomatic primary VUR diagnosed on investigation of antenatal hydronephrosis (ANH) is less clear. Paradoxically, several previous studies have suggested a lower risk (1-25%). We ascertain the incidence of UTI amongst antenatally-presenting primary VUR and explore risk factors.
STUDY DESIGN: All patients <16 years managed for primary VUR between 1997 and 2013 were retrospectively reviewed. Patients were

BACKGROUND: Women with previous female genital mutilation (sometimes referred to as circumcision) are migrating, with increasing frequency, to countries where this practice is uncommon. Many health care professionals in these countries lack experience in assisting women with female genital mutilation during pregnancy and birth, and they are usually untrained in this aspect of care. Somali women who customarily practice the most extensive form of female mutilation, who were resident in Ontario and had recently given birth to a baby in Canada, were surveyed to explore their perceptions of perina

INTRODUCTION: Ulcerative STIs, including syphilis, increase the risk for HIV acquisition and transmission due to the presence of ulcers/chancres that serve as a point-of-entry and exit for HIV. In Zimbabwe, diagnosis of syphilis often occurs in pregnant women who seek ANC services where syphilis testing is offered, and among men and women who seek health care for STIs. Zimbabwe's national syphilis estimates are based on these diagnosed cases, with little information available about the prevalence of untreated syphilis among the general population. This analysis uses data from ZIMPHIA (2015-201

Pelvic inflammatory disease constitutes a major gynecologic problem in the Sudan as in most African countries. This article reviews studies of three important causes of PID involving Sudanese women. Women who attended the gynecologic clinic of Khartoum Hospital with a complaint of vaginal discharge were tested for gonococcal infection to evaluate this potential etiology; only 1.4% of these women had gonorrhea. Since septic abortions also result in PID, we studied 2,447 women admitted to Khartoum hospitals in 1976; only 0.4% of these women had had septic abortions. Female circumcision, which is

Low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (LSIL) are frequently found during cervical cancer screening. Usually they are associated with a human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. Does the high-transmission rate of HPV infection to the male partner represent a clinical risk for him? Are preventive measures to be taken to prevent the occurrence of male diseases? More than 80% of all LSIL are associated with HPV infections. The prevalence of HPV infection in males can range up to 40%, with 60% of the male partners of LSIL female patients presenting with penile flat lesions. The spontaneous cure ra

OBJECTIVES: Female genital cutting is a genital operation for a nonmedical reason and involves the cutting away of a part or whole of the female external genitals. Postnatal women with genital cutting could be more vulnerable to circumcision-associated birth complications, and it is still a major health problem during childbirth and the postnatal period in Ethiopia. This study aimed to assess complications associated with female genital cutting among postnatal women in Chuko Primary Hospital, Sidama region, Southern Ethiopia.
METHODS: An institutional-based quantitative cross-sectional study

Apart from its known association with short- and long-term adverse physical, psychological, and sexual sequelae, female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C) could be associated with increased susceptibility to HIV. Some experts propose that FGM/C increases risk of genital trauma and bleeding. Given the known protective effect for men of male circumcision against HIV and that, in some communities, male circumcision and FGM/C are thought of as "equivalent" or parallel procedures, there is an obvious need to more accurately determine the effects of FGM/C on HIV infection risk in women. Despite global and local attempts to end genital mutilation, in their various forms, whether of males or females, the practice has persisted throughout human history in most parts of the world. Various medical, scientific, hygienic, aesthetic, religious, and cultural reasons have been used to justify it. In this symposium on circumcision, against the background of the other articles by Hutson, Short, and Viens, the practice is set by the author within a wider, global context by discussing a range of rationalisations used to support different types of genital mutilation throughout time and acro

INTRODUCTION: Menstrual problems are the most common gynecologic complaints. The prevalence is highest in the 20 to 24-year-old age group and decreases progressively thereafter. They affect not only the woman, but also family, social and national economics as well. However, Population studies on Menstrual problems and associated factors were very little for university students in Ethiopia.
METHODS: Institutional based quantitative cross-sectional study was employed at Bahir Dar University from October 14 to 20, 2010, Ethiopia. Stratified sampling technique was used and 491 study subjects were

Female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C) is a global problem affecting millions of girls and women. It involves cutting or removing parts of the external genitalia for no medical reason, often without consent, and has no health benefits. It is deeply rooted in tradition and often undertaken by lay practitioners. It is known to have immediate risks (of hemorrhage, infection, death) and long-term sexual, gynecological, obstetric, urological, and mental health sequelae including post-traumatic stress disorder. Health professionals worldwide need to be aware that girls and women from high-prevale

BACKGROUND: Female genital mutilation (FGM) is a harmful practice that affects an estimated 230 million women and girls. Previous research indicates that FGM is associated with increased risk of short- and long-term health complications. Understanding the health complications is important in ensuring high quality care for women and girls already affected and for advocating for prevention of the practice.
OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis of all existing evidence on the association between FGM and a range of health complications.
