Modeling the relative role of human mobility, land-use and climate factors on dengue outbreak emergence in Sri Lanka.

BACKGROUND: More than 80,000 dengue cases including 215 deaths were reported nationally in less than 7 months between 2016 and 2017, a fourfold increase in the number of reported cases compared to the average number over 2010-2016. The region of Negombo, located in the Western province, experienced the greatest number of dengue cases in the country and is the focus area of our study, where we aim to capture the spatial-temporal dynamics of dengue transmission. METHODS: We present a statistical modeling framework to evaluate the spatial-temporal dynamics of the 2016-2017 dengue outbreak in the

Quantifying excess deaths related to heatwaves under climate change scenarios: A multicountry time series modelling study.

BACKGROUND: Heatwaves are a critical public health problem. There will be an increase in the frequency and severity of heatwaves under changing climate. However, evidence about the impacts of climate change on heatwave-related mortality at a global scale is limited. METHODS AND FINDINGS: We collected historical daily time series of mean temperature and mortality for all causes or nonexternal causes, in periods ranging from January 1, 1984, to December 31, 2015, in 412 communities within 20 countries/regions. We estimated heatwave-mortality associations through a two-stage time series design.

A Global-Level Model of the Potential Impacts of Climate Change on Child Stunting via Income and Food Price in 2030.

BACKGROUND: In 2016, 23% of children (155 million) aged [Formula: see text] were stunted. Global-level modeling has consistently found climate change impacts on food production are likely to impair progress on reducing undernutrition. OBJECTIVES: We adopt a new perspective, assessing how climate change may affect child stunting via its impacts on two interacting socioeconomic drivers: incomes of the poorest 20% of populations (due to climate impacts on crop production, health, labor productivity, and disasters) and food prices. METHODS: We developed a statistical model to project moderate an

Downscaled climate change projections with uncertainty assessment over India using a high resolution multi-model approach.

This study presents the possible regional climate change over South Asia with a focus over India as simulated by three very high resolution regional climate models (RCMs). One of the most striking results is a robust increase in monsoon precipitation by the end of the 21st century but regional differences in strength. First the ability of RCMs to simulate the monsoon climate is analyzed. For this purpose all three RCMs are forced with ECMWF reanalysis data for the period 1989-2008 at a horizontal resolution of ~25 km. The results are compared against independent observations. In order to simul…

Time series patterns of dengue and associated climate variables in Bangladesh and Singapore (2000-2020): a comparative study of statistical models to forecast dengue cases.

This study explores the effect of climate factors on dengue incidence in Bangladesh and Singapore from 2000 to 2020. Various forecasting models, including Seasonal ARIMA, Poisson regression, artificial neural networks (ANN), support vector machines (SVM), and other statistical techniques, were applied to forecast dengue trends and generate future datasets. The results showed that Bangladesh has higher mean temperatures. The Poisson regression indicated that rainfall positively correlated with dengue cases in Bangladesh, while humidity and sunshine showed negative associations. In Singapore, te

Unlocking employee creativity through digital leadership: a moderated mediation model of task innovation behavior and team collaboration climate.

PURPOSE: Prior research has linked digital leadership to employee creativity, but the task-level behavioral process underlying this relationship and the role of the surrounding team context have received less attention. Drawing on social cognitive theory, this study examines task innovation behavior as a mediator and tests whether team collaboration climate moderates its association with employee creativity. DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: We collected data from 335 employee-supervisor dyads in China and tested the proposed model using hierarchical regression and bias-corrected bootstrapping. F

Predicting the Potential Distribution of Plantago asiatica L. in Jiangxi Province Under Climate Change Scenarios Using the MaxEnt Model.

Plantago asiatica L. is an important medicinal and edible plant in China, whose wild resources have declined sharply due to overharvesting. Accurately assessing its potential suitable habitats and identifying the dominant environmental factors are of great scientific significance for germplasm conservation. In this study, we focused on Jiangxi Province and, based on 79 field occurrence records and 29 environmental variables, employed a MaxEnt model optimized using the kuenm package (version 1.1.9) (AUC = 0.806) to simulate the potential distribution of this species under current and three futu

Projecting shifts in the distribution of Vachellia tortilis subsp. raddiana in Africa under climate change: a MaxEnt modeling and GIS analysis.

Vachellia tortilis (Forssk.) Hayne subsp. raddiana (Savi) Brenan, a drought-resistant tree native to arid and semi-arid regions of Africa and the Middle East, plays a crucial ecological and socioeconomic role by providing shade, forage, fuelwood, and contributing to soil stabilization and desertification control. To support scientific site selection for artificial planting and assess its current and potential distribution, we used the MaxEnt model combined with ArcGIS to evaluate climatic suitability across Africa based on occurrence records and environmental variables. After ten iterations, t

Policy and Health Justice: A Conceptual Model Relating the Legislative Climate to the Suicide Disparity Among Transgender and Gender Diverse Youth.

The suicide disparity among transgender and gender diverse (TGD) youth in the United States is occurring in a legislative climate with an unprecedented increase in anti-trans bills, yet limited restrictive firearm laws. The Policy and Health Justice: Collective Resilience/Resistance Against Trans (youth) Exclusion and Suicide model, based on Wesp et al.'s Intersectionality Research for Transgender Health Justice framework, proposes a pathway for how anti-trans bills and firearm laws contribute to TGD youth suicide through structures of domination, institutional systems, and socio-structural pr

Sustainable tourism for climate change and environmental sustainability in Tunisia: Evidence from a novel measure, nonlinear modeling, and wavelet coherence.

This study examines the asymmetric impact of international tourism on CO2 emissions and environmental sustainability in Tunisia. Using the Nonlinear Autoregressive Distributed Lag (NARDL) model within a Stochastic Impacts by Regression on Population, Affluence, and Technology (STIRPAT) framework, we construct a composite index via Principal Component Analysis (PCA). Robustness checks include Fully Modified Ordinary Least Squares (FMOLS), Bias-corrected Wavelet coherence, and asymmetric causality analysis through Vector Autoregression (VAR). Findings reveal that tourism traffic asymmetrically a

Impacts of future climate and land use/land cover change on urban runoff using fine-scale hydrologic modeling.

Future changes in land use/land cover (LULC) and climate (CC) affect watershed hydrology. Despite past research on estimating such changes, studies on the impacts of both these nonstationary stressors on urban watersheds have been limited. Urban watersheds have several important details such as hydraulic infrastructure that call for fine-scale models to predict the impacts of LULC and CC on watershed hydrology. In this paper, a fine-scale hydrologic model-Personal Computer Storm Water Management Model (PCSWMM)-was applied to predict the individual and joint impacts of LULC changes and CC on su

Asymmetric impact of climatic parameters on hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome in Shandong using a nonlinear autoregressive distributed lag model.

Hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) poses a major threat in Shandong. This study aimed to investigate the long- and short-term asymmetric effects of meteorological factors on HFRS and establish an early forecasting system using autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) and nonlinear ARDL (NARDL) models. Between 2004 and 2019, HFRS exhibited a declining trend (average annual percentage change = - 9.568%, 95% CI - 16.165 to - 2.451%) with a bimodal seasonality. A long-term asymmetric influence of aggregate precipitation (AP) (Wald long-run asymmetry [WLR] = - 2.697, P = 0.008) and aggregate

Projecting future risk of dengue related to hydrometeorological conditions in mainland China under climate change scenarios: a modelling study.

BACKGROUND: We have limited knowledge on the impact of hydrometeorological conditions on dengue incidence in China and its associated disease burden in a future with a changed climate. This study projects the excess risk of dengue caused by climate change-induced hydrometeorological conditions across mainland China. METHODS: In this modelling study, the historical association between the Palmer drought severity index (PDSI) and dengue was estimated with a spatiotemporal Bayesian hierarchical model from 70 cities. The association combined with the dengue-transmission biological model was used

An agent-based model of tsetse fly response to seasonal climatic drivers: Assessing the impact on sleeping sickness transmission rates.

BACKGROUND: This paper presents the development of an agent-based model (ABM) to incorporate climatic drivers which affect tsetse fly (G. m. morsitans) population dynamics, and ultimately disease transmission. The model was used to gain a greater understanding of how tsetse populations fluctuate seasonally, and investigate any response observed in Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense human African trypanosomiasis (rHAT) disease transmission, with a view to gaining a greater understanding of disease dynamics. Such an understanding is essential for the development of appropriate, well-targeted mitigat

Decoupling photo- and thermoperiod by projected climate change perturbs bud development, dormancy establishment and vernalization in the model tree Populus.

BACKGROUND: The performance and survival of deciduous trees depends on their innate ability to anticipate seasonal change. A key event is the timely production of short photoperiod-induced terminal and axillary buds that are dormant and freezing-tolerant. Some observations suggest that low temperature contributes to terminal bud initiation and dormancy. This is puzzling because low temperatures in the chilling range universally release dormancy. It also raises the broader question if the projected climate instabilities, as well as the northward migration of trees, will affect winter preparatio

Is the future blue-green? A review of the current model predictions of how climate change could affect pelagic freshwater cyanobacteria.

There is increasing evidence that recent changes in climate have had an effect on lake phytoplankton communities and it has been suggested that it is likely that Cyanobacteria will increase in relative abundance under the predicted future climate. However, testing such a qualitative prediction is challenging and usually requires some form of numerical computer model. Therefore, the lake modelling literature was reviewed for studies that examined the impact of climate change upon Cyanobacteria. These studies, taken collectively, generally show an increase in relative Cyanobacteria abundance wit

Serological and biochemical follow-up in cattle naturally infected with Fasciola hepatica, and comparison with a climate model for predicting risks of fasciolosis.

Several biological parameters were measured in 31 heifers naturally infected with Fasciola hepatica during one grazing season in the Belgian Ardennes. A forecast model based on daily temperature used to assess the risk of fasciolosis was fitted to this assay. Cattle were turned out to two pastures. Each pasture was divided into two plots: one was treated with calcium cyanamide and the other was left untreated. The Lymnaea truncatula snails were counted on three different occasions. The results indicated a poor molluscicide efficiency. Body weight gains, anti-Fasciola antibody levels, faecal eg

Predicting the Potential Distribution of Amyelois transitella (Walker) in China Under Climate Change Using a Biomod2-Based Ensemble Model.

The Navel Orangeworm (Amyelois transitella Walker, 1863), a primary pest of nut crops native to North America, poses a significant potential threat to China's agricultural biosecurity, yet its potential distribution dynamics under climate change remain unquantified. This study utilized the Biomod2 ensemble model platform to predict habitat suitability under current and future climate scenarios (SSP1-2.6 and SSP5-8.5). We evaluated the prediction accuracy of the ensemble model using calibration data, with TSS = 0.898 and AUC = 0.978, while spatially stratified cross-validation confirmed moderat
