Clostridium butyricum Supplement Can Ameliorate the Intestinal Barrier Roles in Broiler Chickens Experimentally Infected With Clostridium perfringens.

Necrotic enteritis (NE), caused by Clostridium perfringens, is an economically important disease in the broiler. Among normal flora in the broiler intestinal region, Clostridium butyricum has been identified as a probiotic agent that reduces the susceptibility of broilers to C. perfringens. However, the effects of C. butyricum supplement on broiler intestinal integrity during NE are largely unknown. In this study, we investigated the effects of C. butyricum on the growth performance, intestinal morphology and barrier function, and the functions of immune-related cytokines under NE in broilers.

Meta-analysis of D-values of proteolytic Clostridium botulinum and its surrogate strain Clostridium sporogenes PA 3679.

Foodborne botulism is a serious disease resulting from ingestion of preformed Clostridium botulinum neurotoxin in foodstuff. Since the 19th century, the heat resistance of this spore forming bacteria has been extensively studied in order to guarantee the public health associated with low acidic, ambient stable products. The most largely used heat resistance parameters in thermal settings of such products are the D121.1°C values (time required to have a 10-fold decrease of the spore count, at 121.1°C) and the z-values (temperature increase to have a 10-fold decrease of D-values). To determine D

A case if infant botulism due to neurotoxigenic Clostridium butyricum type E associated with Clostridium difficile colitis.

Reported here is the sixth case of intestinal toxemia botulism caused by Clostridium butyricum type E in Italy since 1984. In this case, the patient was concomitantly affected with colitis due to Clostridium difficile toxin. A review of previously reported cases revealed that some of these patients may also have had intestinal toxemia botulism associated with Clostridium difficile colitis, based on the reported symptoms. Given that this association has been shown to exist not only in Italy but also in the USA, it is recommended that individuals with intestinal botulism and symptoms of colitis

Electron conductive compounds alter fermentative pathways and cooperation in Clostridium carboxidivorans and Clostridium acetobutylicum in co-culture.

The addition of conductive materials promotes interactions between bacteria as they facilitate the exchange of reducing equivalents among cells. In this work, the impact of electron conductive compounds (magnetite, activated carbon, or iron salts) was investigated on a Clostridium acetobutylicum/Clostridium carboxidivorans co-culture. Co-culturing both species with soluble iron salts or magnetite significantly improved carbon recovery in liquid end-products (75%-85% of added carbon) compared to control and activated carbon supplementation (50%-55% of added carbon). The addition of magnetite en

Comparison of supplemented Brucella agar and modified Clostridium difficile agar for antimicrobial susceptibility testing of Clostridium difficile.

BACKGROUND: Antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) of Clostridium difficile is increasingly important because of the rise in resistant strains. The standard medium for the AST of C. difficile is supplemented Brucella agar (sBA), but we found that the growth of C. difficile on sBA was not optimal. Because active growth is critical for reliable AST, we developed a new, modified C. difficile (mCD) agar. C. difficile grew better on mCD agar than on sBA. METHODS: C. difficile isolates were collected from patients with healthcare-associated diarrhea. sBA medium was prepared according to the CLS

Quantities of Clostridium botulinum organisms and toxin in feces and presence of Clostridium botulinum toxin in the serum of an infant with botulism.

A 7-week-old boy presented with symptoms and signs characteristic of infant botulism, and the diagnosis was confirmed by the detection of Clostridium botulinum type A organisms and toxin in the feces. The levels of organisms and toxin in the feces were measured throughout the 81-day period in hospital. The maximum levels detected were 2.46 x 10(8) C. botulinum type A colony-forming units and 64,000 mouse 100% lethal doses of type A toxin per g (wet weight) of feces. C. botulinum toxin was also detected in two samples of the patient's serum, collected 3 and 10 days after admission. Improvement

Characterization of an ATP-binding cassette from Clostridium perfringens with homology to an ABC transporter from Clostridium hathewayi.

A ciprofloxacin-resistant mutant of Clostridium perfringens, strain VPI-C, which had stable mutations in the topoisomerase genes, accumulated less norfloxacin and ethidium bromide than the wild type, strain VPI. Efflux pump inhibitors both increased the accumulation of ethidium bromide by cells of the mutant and enhanced their sensitivity to this toxic dye. Cloning a gene, which codes for a putative ABC transporter protein (NP_562422) of 527 amino acids, from the mutant strain VPI-C into the wild-type strain VPI not only reduced the accumulation of ethidium bromide by the recombinant strain bu

[Progress in research of Clostridium perfringens toxin].

Clostridium perfringens can produce many kinds of toxins and hydrolase, causing gas gangrene, enteritis and enterotoxemia in both human and animals. It is known that C. perfringens can produce more than 20 toxins and hydrolases. The different toxin types are associated with specific disease types. At present, molecular toxin-typing method by PCR has replaced the traditional serological typing method. In this study, we systematically summarize the types, basic characteristics, pathogenic mechanism and the relationship with disease of C. perfringens toxins to provide evidence for the establishme

Sialidases From Clostridium perfringens and Their Inhibitors.

Clostridium perfringens is an important human and animal pathogen that is the primary causative agent of necrotizing enteritis and enterotoxemia in many types of animals; it causes traumatic gas gangrene in humans and animals and is associated with cases of food poisoning in humans. C. perfringens produces a variety of toxins as well as many enzymes, including three sialidases, NanH, NanI, and NanJ. Sialidases could be important virulence factors that promote the pathogenesis of C. perfringens. Among them, NanI promotes the colonization of C. perfringens in the intestinal tract and enhances th

Regulation of Toxin Production in Clostridium perfringens.

The Gram-positive anaerobic bacterium Clostridium perfringens is widely distributed in nature, especially in soil and the gastrointestinal tracts of humans and animals. C. perfringens causes gas gangrene and food poisoning, and it produces extracellular enzymes and toxins that are thought to act synergistically and contribute to its pathogenesis. A complicated regulatory network of toxin genes has been reported that includes a two-component system for regulatory RNA and cell-cell communication. It is necessary to clarify the global regulatory system of these genes in order to understand and tr

Production of butanol and isopropanol with an immobilized Clostridium.

Clostridium beijerinckii optinoii is a Clostridium species that produces butanol, isopropanol and small amounts of ethanol. This study compared the performances of batch and continuous immobilized cell fermentations, investigating how media flow rates and nutritional modification affected solvent yields and productivity. In 96-h batch cultures, with 80 % of the 30 g L(-1) glucose consumed in synthetic media, solvent concentration was 9.45 g L(-1) with 66.0 % as butanol. In a continuous fermentation using immobilized C. beijerinckii optinoii cells, also with 80 % of 30 g L(-1) glucose utilizati

Update on antimicrobial resistance in Clostridium difficile.

Clostridium difficile is the leading cause of healthcare-associated diarrhea. Since 2002, the morbidity and mortality rates of C. difficile infection have increased dramatically in Europe and North America. The emergence of C. difficile strains that are resistant to multiple antimicrobial agents can complicate prevention programs and potential treatment. Although most clinical isolates are still susceptible to metronidazole and vancomycin, heteroresistance to metronidazole and increasing vancomycin MICs (minimum inhibitory concentrations) have been reported. The prevalence of resistance to oth

Appendicectomy and clostridium difficile infection: is there a link?

Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) is a gradually emerging healthcare problem in the western world, occurring predominantly from the de-arrangement of the gut microbiota and the widespread use of antibiotics. Recently, it has been proposed that the presence or absence of the appendix could be a factor influencing the occurrence and/or the severity of CDI. We performed a review of the literature, aiming to identify and interpret in an accumulative way the results of the published clinical studies which addressed the issue of a possible association between prior appendicectomy and the feature

[Experience with laboratory diagnosis of Clostridium difficile].

BACKGROUND: Clostridium difficile is currently a significant cause of nosocomial diarrhea. For several years, the number of infectious cases in the community has also been increasing. Since the beginning of 2010, quite a large increase in the number of Clostridium difficile infections (CDIs) has been noted in Pardubice Regional Hospital (PRH). The objectives of this study were to describe and evaluate the methods used in the laboratory diagnosis of CDIs in PRH, and to describe the laboratory diagnostic algorithm used here. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Samples of stools were taken from symptomatic pa

Diagnosis and management of Clostridium difficile infection.

Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) is increasing in frequency and severity in and out of the hospital, with a high probability of recurrence after treatment. The recent literature on CDI was reviewed using PubMed to include recent publications dealing with diagnosis and therapy. Real-time polymerase chain reaction is a sensitive and useful diagnostic test for CDI but there are growing concerns of false-positive test results if the rate of CDI is low in the patient population providing samples and/or if the population being studied commonly includes people with C difficile colonization.
