The effects of comorbid personality disorders on cognitive behavioral treatment for panic disorder.

The present study investigated the influence of personality pathology assessed both dimensionally and categorically on acute clinical response to group cognitive-behavioral treatment in a large sample of panic disorder patients (N = 173) meeting DSMIII-R criteria for panic disorder with or without agoraphobia. Nearly one-third of the sample met for one or more personality disorders, with the majority meeting for a Cluster C diagnosis. Patients with one or more comorbid personality disorders displayed higher baseline and higher post treatment scores across multiple indices of panic disorder sev

Cognition in patients with neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders: A prospective multicentre study of 217 patients (CogniNMO-Study).

BACKGROUND: There is limited and inconsistent information on the prevalence of cognitive impairment in neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders (NMOSD). OBJECTIVE: To assess cognitive performance and changes over time in NMOSD. METHODS: This study included data from 217 aquaporin-4-IgG-seropositive (80%) and double-seronegative NMOSD patients. Cognitive functions measured by Symbol Digit Modalities Test (SDMT), Paced Auditory Serial-Addition Task (PASAT), and/or Multiple Sclerosis Inventory Cognition (MuSIC) were standardized against normative data (N = 157). Intraindividual cognitive perform

Cognition, prior aggression, and psychopathic traits in relation to impaired multimodal emotion recognition in psychotic spectrum disorders.

BACKGROUND: Psychopathic traits have been associated with impaired emotion recognition in criminal, clinical and community samples. A recent study however, suggested that cognitive impairment reduced the relationship between psychopathy and emotion recognition. We therefore investigated if reasoning ability and psychomotor speed were impacting emotion recognition in individuals with psychotic spectrum disorders (PSD) with and without a history of aggression, as well as in healthy individuals, more than self-rated psychopathy ratings on the Triarchic Psychopathy Measure (TriPM). METHODS: Eight

Mismatch negativity amplitude in first-degree relatives of individuals with psychotic disorders: Links with cognition and schizotypy.

Mismatch negativity (MMN) amplitude is reliably reduced in psychotic disorders. While several studies have examined this effect in first-degree relatives of individuals with schizophrenia, few have sought to quantify deficits in relatives of individuals with other psychotic disorders. While some conclude that, compared to healthy subjects, first-degree relatives of schizophrenia show reduced MMN, others contradict this finding. Furthermore, though MMN is often shown to be associated with cognitive impairments and clinical symptoms in psychotic disorders, to our knowledge no studies have sought

Social Cognition in Schizophrenia and Autism Spectrum Disorders: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Direct Comparisons.

Background: Deficits in social cognition are well-recognized in both schizophrenia and autism spectrum disorders (ASD). However, it is less clear how social cognition deficits differ between both disorders and what distinct mechanisms may underlie such differences. We aimed at reviewing available evidence from studies directly comparing social cognitive performance between individuals with schizophrenia and ASD. Methods: We performed a systematic review of literature up to May 22, 2018 on Pubmed, Web of Science, and Scopus. Search terms included combinations of the keywords "social cognition,"

Transdiagnostic Profiles of BOLD Signal Variability in Autism and Schizophrenia Spectrum Disorders: Associations With Cognition and Functioning.

Autism spectrum disorder (autism) and schizophrenia spectrum disorders (schizophrenia) exhibit overlapping social and neurocognitive impairment and considerable neurobiological heterogeneity. Blood-oxygen-level-dependent (BOLD) signal variability captures the brain's moment-to-moment fluctuations, offering a dynamic marker of neural flexibility that is sensitive to cognitive capacity. This study aimed to examine intra-regional BOLD signal variability during rest and task across schizophrenia, autism, and typically developing controls (TDC) to explore transdiagnostic patterns of brain signal va

Impact of intelligence on social cognition in mentally disordered offenders: preliminary evidence in schizophrenia and personality disorders.

INTRODUCTION: Social cognition (SC) allows individuals to perceive, interpret, and react to intentions and behaviors of others. Forensic psychiatry patients show impaired SC, leading to emergence of violent behaviors. This impairment may differ according to patients' intelligence quotient and psychiatric diagnosis (schizophrenia spectrum vs. personality disorders). AIMS: The study investigated emotional SC and cognitive SC in male forensic inpatients, exploring demographic, criminological and clinical determinants. Methods: We retrospectively retrieved and analyzed data in a preliminary sampl

[Effects of lithium, valproic acid, carbamazepine and antipsychotic agents on cognition in bipolar disorders-A systematic review].

BACKGROUND: Until now the long-term consequences of the medical treatment for bipolar disorder have barely been examined, especially the consequences with respect to cognitive impairment and dementia. Some studies show signs that some treatment options have a better effect on the brain than others. This review summarizes the current state of research. OBJECTIVE: The effects of long-term consequences of lithium, valproic acid, carbamazepine and antipsychotic agents on the development of dementia or cognitive impairments in patients with bipolar disorder were investigated. Lesion network guided delta frequency neuromodulation improves cognition in patients with psychosis spectrum disorders: A pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Transcranial electric stimulation (tES) may improve cognition in psychosis spectrum disorders. However, few studies have used novel tES approaches, such as high definition tES (HD-tES) to target specific brain circuits. Recently, the extrastriate visual cortex (V5/MT) has been causally linked to visual hallucinations through lesion network mapping and this may be a promising approach for improving cognition. OBJECTIVE: We aim to determine if causal lesion network guided HD-tES to V5/MT improves cognitive performance as measured by the Brief Assessment of Cognition in Schizophrenia

The associations between suicide-related behaviors, prefrontal dysfunction in emotional cognition, and personality traits in mood disorders.

Suicide is a serious public health problem, and it is urgent to identify biomarkers associated with suicide to prevent it. We aimed to clarify the association across suicidal behavior, personality traits, and brain activation by emotional stimulation tasks using near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) in patients with mood disorders. 11 mood disorder patients with a history of suicide attempt (MDSA), 18 mood disorder patients with no history of suicide attempt (MDNSA), and 17 healthy individuals were studied. The MDSA patients showed significantly high impulsivity and hopeless compared to healthy su

Limited time-specific and longitudinal effects of depressive and manic symptoms on cognition in bipolar spectrum disorders.

OBJECTIVES: Previous research suggests that cognitive performance worsens during manic and depressed states in bipolar disorder (BD). However, studies have often relied upon between-subject, cross-sectional analyses and smaller sample sizes. The current study examined the relationship between mood symptoms and cognition in a within-subject, longitudinal study with a large sample. METHODS: Seven hundred and seventy-three individuals with BD completed a neuropsychological battery and mood assessments at baseline and 1-year follow-up. The battery captured eight domains of cognition: fine motor d

Sex-specific genetic association between psychiatric disorders and cognition, behavior and brain imaging in children and adults.

Although there are pronounced sex differences for psychiatric disorders, relatively little has been published on the heterogeneity of sex-specific genetic effects for these traits until very recently for adults. Much less is known about children because most psychiatric disorders will not manifest until later in life and existing studies for children on psychiatric traits such as cognitive functions are underpowered. We used results from publicly available genome-wide association studies for six psychiatric disorders and individual-level data from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (AB

Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation and Cognition in Neuropsychiatric Disorders: Systematic Review of the Evidence and Future Directions.

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) has been implemented in neuropsychiatric disorders characterized by cognitive impairment. However, methodological heterogeneity challenges conclusive remarks. Through a critical analysis of previous conflicting findings and in the light of current neurobiological models of pathophysiology, we qualitatively assessed the effects of tDCS in neuropsychiatric disorders that share neurobiological underpinnings, as to evaluate whether stimulation can improve cognitive deficits in patients' cohorts. We performed a systematic review of tDCS studies targeti

[Social cognition in patients with mood disorders. Part II: bipolar disorder : a selective review of the literature].

OBJECTIVE: Overview on the current knowledge regarding social cognition in patients with bipolar disorder. METHODS: Selective literature research on deficits in social cognition intrinsic to bipolar disorder, their occurrence and effects. RESULTS: Deficits in social cognition are considered to be core features of bipolar disorder. They are apparent during acute episodes of the disorder, endure when patients are in remission and have a significant negative impact on the patients' psychosocial outcomes. CONCLUSIONS: It is important to consider deficits in social cognition as an integral part

Cognitive and behavioral disorders in Parkinson's disease: an update. II: behavioral disorders.

Patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) can experience several behavioral symptoms, such as apathy, agitation, hypersexuality, stereotypic movements, pathological gambling, abuse of antiparkinsonian drugs, and REM sleep behavioral disorders. Psychoses and hallucinations, depression and anxiety disorders, and difficulties in recognizing and experiencing emotions also impair behavior and can cause severe psychosocial problems in patients with PD. Symptoms can be present since early stages of the disease, sometimes even before the appearance of classical motor symptoms, likely in relation to dopam

Voice Disorders as Early Biomarkers of Cognitive Decline.

BACKGROUND: Dementia affects greater than 57 million people worldwide. With an aging population and limited disease-curing treatments available, early identification of biomarkers is crucial. The 2020 Lancet Commission identified hearing loss as the largest modifiable risk factor for dementia globally, and a randomized controlled trial found that hearing intervention reduced 3-year cognitive change in older adults who were at increased risk for cognitive decline. Similarly, studies have found that abnormalities in acoustic measures of voice are correlated with cognitive status and can potentia

[NUTRITION MANAGEMENT FOR COGNITIVE DISORDERS AND DEMENTIA (OVERVIEW)].

The current trend of increasing life expectancy and aging of the world's population is accompanied by the emergence of a global problem associated with a doubling of patients with «senile dementia» every 20 years. The concept of age-associated forms of cognitive disorders (vascular dementia, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, etc.) is based on the provisions of the effects of unhealthy lifestyle and nutrition habits, family history, involutive metabolic processes, pathological complications of diseasesand their comorbidity. A literature search of systematic reviews, clinical research reports on the pub

Endogenous retroviruses in neurodevelopmental, psychotic and cognitive disorders.

Endogenous retroviruses (ERVs) are inherited retroviral genomic elements that integrated into the mammalian genome through germline infections and insertions during evolution. Human ERVs (HERVs) comprise approximately 8 % of the human genome and are increasingly recognized to be involved in the etiology and pathophysiology of numerous brain disorders. In this narrative review, we summarize the existing evidence linking abnormal HERV expression to neurodevelopmental and psychosis-related disorders and discuss how these retroviral elements may contribute to the heterogeneity in clinical outcomes
