Freezing is widely regarded as a microbiologically protective process that suppresses growth and extends shelf life but rarely eliminates microorganisms. Microbial risk in frozen foods is, therefore, determined not only by survival during storage at -18°C but by post-thaw repair and growth during thawing and handling. This review synthesizes freeze-induced injury mechanisms, including membrane damage, osmotic stress, oxidative injury, and macromolecular disruption, and links them to physiological state transitions, lag phase behavior, and recovery potential. Rather than treating sublethal inju

INTRODUCTION: Hemorrhagic shock (HS) poses a life-threatening condition with the lungs being one of the most susceptible organs to its deleterious effects. Extracellular cold-inducible RNA binding protein has emerged as a pivotal mediator of inflammation, and its release has been observed as a case of HS-induced tissue injury. Previous studies unveiled a promising engineered microRNA, designated PS-OMe miR130, which inhibits extracellular cold-inducible RNA binding protein, thereby safeguarding vital organs. In this study, we hypothesized that PS-OMe miR130 serves as a protective shield agains

BACKGROUND: Remote ischaemic preconditioning (RIPC) induced by brief ischaemia and reperfusion of the arm reduces myocardial injury in coronary artery bypass (CABG) surgery patients receiving predominantly cross-clamp fibrillation for myocardial protection. However, cold-blood cardioplegia is the more commonly used method world wide.
OBJECTIVE: To assess whether RIPC is cardioprotective in CABG patients receiving cold-blood cardioplegia.
DESIGN: Single-centre, single-blinded, randomised controlled trial.
SETTING: Tertiary referral hospital in London.
PATIENTS: Adults patients (18-80 years)

BACKGROUND: We evaluated cerebral metabolic change during brain hypothermia with intravascular perfusion of cooled crystalloid solution using an extracorporeal cooling-filtration system and cerebroprotective effects of this hypothermia on brain injury in an animal model.
METHOD: Microdialysis probes were implanted into the bilateral parietal cortices. A cold-induced brain injury was produced behind the microdialysis probe on the right parietal cortex. Immediately after injury in the cooled group (n=9), Ringer's solution cooled to 5 degrees C was infused into the right vertebral artery after o

BACKGROUND: Limitations in autogenous tissue have inspired the study of alternative materials for repair of complex peripheral nerve injuries. Cadaveric allografts are one potential reconstructive material, but their use requires systemic immunosuppression. Cold preservation (> or =7 weeks) renders allografts devoid of antigens, but these acellular substrates generally fail in supporting regeneration beyond 3 cm. In this study, the authors evaluated the reconstruction of extensive nonhuman primate peripheral nerve defects using 7-week cold-preserved allografts repopulated with cultured autolog

Changes in sensory function including chronic pain and allodynia are common sequelae of spinal cord injury (SCI) in humans. The present study documents the extent and time course of mechanical allodynia and cold hyperalgesia after contusion SCI in the rat using stimulation with graded von Frey filaments (4.97-50.45 g force) and ice probes. Fore- and hind-paw withdrawal thresholds to plantar skin stimulation were determined in rats with a range of SCI severities (10-g weight dropped from 6.25, 12.5, or 25 mm using the MASCIS injury device); animals with 25-mm injuries most consistently showed d

Improving the protection of marginal liver grafts during static cold storage is a major hurdle to increase the donor pool of organs. The endothelium glycocalyx quality of preservation influences future inflammatory and oxidative responses. One cellular pathway responsible for the formation of nitric oxide by endothelial cells is dependent on the stimulation of proteoglycans present in the glycocalyx. We investigated the impact of the glycocalyx preservation in static cold storage of fatty liver preserved in different preservation solutions on the endothelium-mediated production of NO. Zucker f

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Cannabinoids have analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties but their use is limited by psychotropic activity at CNS receptors. Restricting cannabinoid delivery to peripheral tissues at systemically inactive doses offers a potential solution to this problem.
EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH: WIN 55,212-2 was continuously delivered to the site of a partial ligation injury to the sciatic nerve via a perineural catheter connected to a mini-osmotic pump implanted at the time of injury. Bilateral reflex limb withdrawal behaviour was measured in adult male Wistar rats in response to m

BACKGROUND: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) patients on antiplatelet medications lack definitive treatment for reversal of platelet inhibition and restoration of injury-induced platelet dysfunction. The use of platelet transfusions in this patient population remains controversial. Cold-stored platelets (CSPs) may be hemostatically superior to their room temperature platelet (RTP) counterparts for hemostatic resuscitation, but their impact on post-transfusion platelet function has yet to be assessed clinically. We aimed to evaluate the effect of CSP or RTP on post-transfusion platelet function in

To investigate vascular endothelium damage in rats exposed to hypoxic and cold and the effect of salidroside in protecting against this damage. A rat isolated aortic ring hypoxia/cold model was established to simulate exposure to hypoxic and cold. The levels of endothelial cell injury markers were measured by ELISA. TEM was performed to observe the ultrastructure of vascular ring endothelial cells. In vitro assays were performed to verify the effect of salidroside on endothelial cells. CCK-8 and flow cytometry were performed to analyze endothelial cell survival and apoptosis, respectively. Ca2

BACKGROUND: Ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI) is the major cause of primary graft dysfunction in organ transplantation. The mitogen-activated protein kinase/extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) signaling pathway plays a crucial role in cell physiological and pathological processes including IRI. This study aims to investigate whether inhibition of ERK signaling with U0126 can prevent prolonged cold IRI in heart transplantation.
METHODS: Rat cardiac cell line H9c2 cells were treated with U0126 before exposure to hypothermic hypoxia/reoxygenation (H/R) conditions. The effect of U0126 on
