Poxvirus Infection in a Colony of Laboratory Pigeons (Columba livia).

Pigeons (Columba livia) are used in biomedical research for studies of vision, cognition, neuronal pathways, and spatial orientation. Because there are few commercial laboratory sources, research pigeons are typically acquired from local fancier breeders or bred onsite. For acquired pigeons, the health and vaccine status is often unknown. A juvenile pigeon, born onsite and living in an enclosed outdoor loft, presented with small, bleeding, wart-like lesions on the medial aspects of digits 1 and 4. Topical treatment was initiated. Within a week, 4 fledglings were reported for small, dark papula

Role of granulocyte colony-stimulating factor in human reproduction.

As new research reveals, granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) plays an effective role in pregnancy success, considering that it not only affects the embryo implantation and ovarian function but also it promotes endometrial thickening and improves the pathophysiology of endometriosis, which all fundamentally lead to reducing pregnancy loss. In this review, we focus on the role of G-CSF in human reproduction. We summarized its role in ovulation, luteinized unruptured follicle syndrome, poor responders, improving repeated in vitro fertilization failure, endometrial receptivity and treatm

Clinical Salmonellosis in a Closed Colony of Blood Donor Cats.

An adult feline blood donor, group-housed in a closed colony with other blood donor cats in a laboratory animal facility, developed anorexia, abdominal pain, an abdominal mass effect, and hemorrhagic diarrhea. Ultimately Salmonella infection was diagnosed. The index cat and 2 additional cats in the closed colony had clinical signs consistent with Salmonella and yielded Salmonella serotype 4,12:i:- in fecal cultures. An extensive search for the source of Salmonella was unrewarding. With the implementation of individual housing and additional barrier precautions, combined with antibiotic treatme

Pharmacoeconomics of granulocyte colony-stimulating factor: a critical review.

INTRODUCTION: In the USA, neutropenia-related hospitalization is estimated to occur in 34.2 cases per 1,000 chemotherapy-treated patients. The cost of hospitalization is significant with estimates ranging, on average, from $10,000 to $30,000 per neutropenia-related hospitalization. Prophylactic use of granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) significantly reduces the risk and duration of neutropenia-related negative events. However, the exact economic benefits of using G-CSF prophylactically are not completely known. The objective of this review is to examine the cost of G-CSF as primary

Colonial morphotypes and biofilm forming ability of Burkholderia pseudomallei.

Burkholderia pseudomallei the causative agent of melioidosis, is being increasingly recognized as an important cause of morbidity and mortality in South East Asia. Biofilm formation of B. pseudomallei may be responsible for dormancy, latency and relapse of melioidosis. Based on the colonial morphology of the bacteria on B. pseudomallei selective agar medium, seven distinct morphotypes were identified. This study was conducted to assess the in vitro biofilm produced by B. pseudomallei and to investigate possible correlation between B. pseudomallei morphotypes with biofilm forming abilities of t

Avian cholera, a threat to the viability of an Arctic seabird colony?

Evidence that infectious diseases cause wildlife population extirpation or extinction remains anecdotal and it is unclear whether the impacts of a pathogen at the individual level can scale up to population level so drastically. Here, we quantify the response of a Common eider colony to emerging epidemics of avian cholera, one of the most important infectious diseases affecting wild waterfowl. We show that avian cholera has the potential to drive colony extinction, even over a very short period. Extinction depends on disease severity (the impact of the disease on adult female survival) and dis

[Isolation and identification of a Staphylococcus aureus small colony variants].

OBJECTIVE: Staphylococcus aureus small colony variants (S. aureus SCVs) could lead to persistent, recurrent infection with the characteristics of aminoglycosides antibiotics resistance, making them a big challenge for clinical diagnosis and therapy. We aimed at isolating and identifying isolates of S. aureus SCVs and providing the biological material of SCVs study in China. METHODS: The combination assays of observing colony phenotype, identification of the species-specific gene nuc of S. aureus by PCR amplification and a series of biochemical tests were conducted on 104 clinical isolates ori

Queen promiscuity lowers disease within honeybee colonies.

Most species of social insects have singly mated queens, but in some species each queen mates with numerous males to create a colony with a genetically diverse worker force. The adaptive significance of polyandry by social insect queens remains an evolutionary puzzle. Using the honeybee (Apis mellifera), we tested the hypothesis that polyandry improves a colony's resistance to disease. We established colonies headed by queens that had been artificially inseminated by either one or 10 drones. Later, we inoculated these colonies with spores of Paenibacillus larvae, the bacterium that causes a hi

Colony-stimulating factors in the management of neutropenia and its complications.

Granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (CSF) and granulocyte-macrophage CSF are potent drugs used to increase neutrophil counts after myelosuppressive chemotherapy. However, in various indications, the use of CSFs has no clinical benefit with regard to morbidity or mortality from infectious complications, frequency of antibiotic use, or rate of hospitalization. Thus, the application of CSFs should be limited to indications with proven clinical benefits or evidence of cost-effectiveness. This review will provide an overview of the state-of-the-art use of CSFs in chemotherapy-associated neutropen

Unrelated queens coexist in colonies of the termite Macrotermes michaelseni.

Relatedness increases the likelihood of cooperation within colonies of social insects. Polygyny, the coexistence of numerous reproductive females (queens) in a colony, is common in mature colonies of the termite Macrotermes michaelseni. In this species, polygyny results from pleometrosis and from several female alates that jointly found a new colony. To explain this phenomenon, it was suggested that only related females cooperate and survive during maturation of colonies. Using multilocus fingerprints as well as microsatellites, we showed that nestmate queens in mature colonies are unrelated.

Genetic conflict and conditional altruism in social aphid colonies.

Although kin selection is central to the modern study of social evolution, recent studies of social species have revealed that no simple relationship exists between levels of kinship and sociality. The soldier-producing aphids are unique among highly social animals because, barring movement by aphids between colonies, they occur in clonal groups of genetically identical individuals. Potentially, clonality simplifies efforts to understand social evolution in aphids by obviating issues of intragroup conflict. However, we report here high levels of clonal mixing and conflict in an aphid society.

Sweet's syndrome associated with granulocyte colony-stimulating factor.

We present two patients who developed Sweet's syndrome (SS) during recombinant granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) treatment. Case 1 : on day 11 of the fifth cycle of G-CSF treatment, a 21-year-old man with relapsed, intracranial germ cell tumor had fever, and painful, subcutaneous nodules on his right arm and right leg concomitant with neutrophilia. Skin biopsy revealed neutrophilic panniculitis. The skin lesions disappeared completely after discontinuance of G-CSF. Case 2 : on day 7 of G-CSF treatment, a 50-year-old woman with small cell lung cancer developed fever, and widely diss

Role of colony-stimulating factor-1 in reproduction and development.

The CSF-1 null mouse, osteopetrotic, has provided a powerful model in which to study the biological functions of CSF-1. In this review, I will describe our studies that have used this mouse model to determine the impact of a lack of CSF-1 on developmental processes and in reproduction. A role for CSF-1 in reproduction was originally suggested by the sex steroid hormone-regulated uterine epithelial synthesis of CSF-1 and the expression of its receptor in trophoblast and decidual cells. Studies on the fertility of CSF-1 deficient osteopetrotic mice (csfmop/csfmop) mice confirmed this suggestion

Role of colony-stimulating factor-1 in bone metabolism.

Colony-stimulating factor-1 (CSF-1) is a cytokine required for proliferation, differentiation, activity, and survival of cells of the mononuclear phagocytic system. The growth factor is synthesized as a soluble, matrix, or membrane associated molecule. The specific functions of these forms are not clear. However, some data suggest a dependence of the development of various populations of tissue macrophages on the locally expressed and presented cytokine. Deficiency in CSF-1, as is the case in the murine mutant strain op/op, results in low numbers of macrophages and monocytes and, most striking

[Effects of granulocyte-colony stimulating factor on hematogram examinations].

Effects of granulocyte-colony stimulating factor (G-CSF) on hemograms were studied in the leukopenic phase after chemotherapy on patients with solid malignant tumors and lymphocytic malignancies. The samples were from patients with solid malignant tumors (solid tumor group) and from those with lymphocytic malignancies (lymphocytic malignancy group). In the control group, the increase rate and the decrease rate of the white blood cell count were 1.48 and 0.67, respectively. With the administration of G-CSF, they were 4.99 and 0.29 in the malignant tumor group, and 11.83 and 0.19 changes beyond
