A comparative study of four immunological tests used for anti-Cysticercus antibodies detection--Enzyme-Linked ImmunoSorbent Assay IgG (ELISA-G) and IgM (ELISA-M), indirect immunofluorescence (RIFI) and complement fixation (RFC)--was made in serum and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). 539 patients with symptoms suggesting cysticercosis, 450 relatives of these patients and 133 normal people (control group) were examined. 1122 serum samples and 120 CSF samples were analysed by ELISA-G and RIFI, 83 sera and 60 CSF also by RFC, and 28 CSF by ELISA-M. 5.2% serum samples were reagent in ELISA-G and RIFI, an

AIMS: To assess the efficiency of a Brucella melitensis B115 rough strain, naturally devoid of anticomplementary activity, used as antigen in a complement fixation test (CFT) to detect antibodies induced by Brucella strains with rough phenotype, such as Brucella abortus RB51, Brucella ovis and Brucella canis.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Complement fixation testing was performed on sera from RB51-vaccinated cattle and buffaloes, B. ovis-infected sheep and B. canis-infected dogs using B115, RB51 and the hot saline extract (HSE) as antigens. The B115-based CFT proved highly sensitive and specific in de

The association of Campylobacter pyloridis with antrum gastritis and peptic ulcers was described. We investigated antral biopsies from 180 patients who underwent gastroscopy. By culture or Gram stain or both, we found overall 98 (54%) of them to be positive for C. pyloridis. In the various groups the following percentages were found to be positive: normal antral mucosa 3% (n = 30); moderate superficial antrum gastritis, 49% (n = 83); severe superficial antrum gastritis, 86% (n = 44); duodenal ulcer, 83% (n = 54); and gastric ulcer, 72% (n = 18). A serological screening that used a complement f

To a BHK-21 cell culture fluid infected with the O, A, or Asia 1 type of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) virus was added polyethylene glycol 16000 to a concentration of 10% (w/v). Then the fluid was concentrated to one-tenth of the original volume. The resulting concentrated virus antigens showed a complement fixation (CF) titer ranging from 12 to 14. The rate of recovery of CF activity was in a range of 40 approximately 80%. Each antigen was applied to the indirect complement fixation (ICF) test with serum from cattle infected experimentally with the respective type of virus to estimate antibody
