Compulsive and impulsive symptomatology in trichotillomania.

Although classified as a disorder of impulse control, trichotillomania (hair pulling) may have some phenomenological overlap with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). The question arises as to whether trichotillomania is best conceptualized as a disorder characterized by impulsivity or compulsivity. Impulsive and compulsive symptoms and traits were compared in 43 patients who presented for treatment of trichotillomania, OCD or impulsive personality disorder. Trichotillomania patients had significantly lower scores of obsessive-compulsive symptoms than OCD patients, and significantly higher imp

Personality disorder functioning styles are associated with the effects of the cognitive-behavioral therapy for panic disorder: a preliminary study.

BACKGROUND: The effect of the cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for panic disorder varies, but how personality disorder functioning style influences it remains unclear. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: In 30 healthy volunteers and 44 patients with panic disorder (22 treated and 22 waiting list), we administered the Parker Personality Measure (PERM) and the Plutchik-van Praag Depression Inventory (PVP). Before and during the CBT or waiting period, patients were asked to record their panic attacks using the Panic Attack Record (PAR). RESULTS: Patients scored significantly higher on PERM Antisocial, Bord

A controlled family study of anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa: psychiatric disorders in first-degree relatives and effects of proband comorbidity.

BACKGROUND: We used contemporary family-epidemiological methods to examine patterns of comorbidity and familial aggregation of psychiatric d … robands, and familial aggregation was independent of that of bulimia nervosa. The risk of obsessive-compulsive personality disorder was elevated only among relatives of anorexic probands, and there was evidence that these 2 disorders may have shared familial risk factors. CONCLUSIONS: There may be a common familial vulnerability for anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. Major d …

Eating disorders in a large clinical sample of men and women with personality disorders.

OBJECTIVE: We assessed and compared the prevalence of anorexia nervosa (AN), bulimia nervosa (BN), and eating disorder not otherwise specifi … nosed with BN or EDNOS. The rate of AN was significantly elevated in female patients with obsessive-compulsive personality disorder. Men demonstrated significantly less diagnostic co-occurrence and no significant differential variation across PD groups or MDD. DISCUSSION: Data which included a psychiatric comparison group showed less co-occurrence and non-significant variation …

Diagnostic Correlates of Nonsuicidal Self-Injury Disorder among Veterans with Psychiatric Disorders.

With its recent inclusion in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, nonsuicidal self-injury disorder (NSSID) has received limited research attention, especially in samples of military veterans. The present study sought to identify diagnostic predictors of NSSID within a veteran sample. Study participants included 124 veterans with at least one psychiatric diagnosis. Chi-square tests and t-tests evaluated bivariate associations between NSSID and twenty diagnostic correlates. Logistic regression models identified psychiatric disorders that were unique correlates of NSSID among veterans. Veterans

Personality disorders among subjects recovered from eating disorders.

OBJECTIVE: Personality disorders are common in symptomatic eating disorders subjects. Because personality symptoms could be exaggerated by malnutrition or Axis I disorders, we studied women who had recovered from eating disorders for at least 1 year to see if personality disorder symptoms persisted in the well state. METHOD: Personality disorders were evaluated in 10 women recovered from anorexia nervosa (AN), 28 women recovered from bulimia nervosa (BN), and 16 women recovered from AN and BN, using the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-III-R personality disorders. RESULTS: Fourteen of 5

The relation of major depression, OCD, personality disorders and affective temperaments with Temporal lobe epilepsy.

BACKGROUND: In patients with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE), studies demonstrate frequent comorbidity with mood disorders, personality disorders (especially obsessive-compulsive disorder) and major depression, but there are conflicting findings. This study aimed to investigate psychiatric comorbidities and affective temperament among TLE patients and to explore the relationships between obsessive compulsive disorder, other personality disorders, major depression and affective temperament in order to clarify the mediator effect of TLE in these relationships. METHODS: Thirty patients with TLE and

An autistic dimension: a proposed subtype of obsessive-compulsive disorder.

This article focuses on the possibility that autism spectrum disorder (ASD: Asperger syndrome, autism and atypical autism) in its milder forms may be clinically important among a substantial proportion of patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and discusses OCD subtypes based on this proposition. The hypothesis derives from extensive clinical experience of OCD and ASD, and literature searches on MEDLINE. Neuropsychological deficits are more common in OCD than in panic disorder and depression. Moreover, obsessive-compulsive and schizotypal personality disorders are over-represented

[Pathological buying. A review of the current knowledge regarding this condition of behavioral excess].

Compulsive buying is characterized by frequent excessive purchasing of items that are primarily not needed or used. The compulsive buying behavior results in mental, social, financial and often legal problems. Although compulsive buying affects a significant percentage of the general population and has received increasing attention in research, it has largely been ignored in clinical practice. Compulsive buying disorder is currently conceptualized as an"impulse control disorder not otherwise specified". However, the appropriate classification continues to be debated. Compulsive buying is assoc

Borderline personality disorder in Trichotillomania and skin picking disorder: a survey study.

BACKGROUND: Comorbidity studies in trichotillomania and skin picking disorder (known as Body-Focused Repetitive Behaviors, BFRBs) have traditionally not examined rates of borderline personality disorder. When it co-occurs, borderline personality disorder may necessitate different treatment approaches and if untreated may interfere with the response to the treatment for trichotillomania or skin picking disorder. The objectives of this study were to (1) examine the rate of co-occurring borderline personality disorder in BFRBs; and (2) explore associations between co-occurring borderline personal

MCMI-II personality disorders in recent-onset bipolar disorders.

This study investigated the personality disorders of 21 recent-onset Bipolar Disorder patients using the revised Million Clinical Multiaxial Inventory (MCMI-II; Millon, 1987). Personality disorder assessments, conducted after patients' clinical symptoms had settled, indicated that 17 patients received at least one MCMI-II personality disorder diagnosis with a trend toward multiple diagnoses. Narcissistic, Antisocial, and Histrionic personality disorders were diagnosed most frequently and were the scales most elevated. Schizoid and Compulsive personality disorders were the scales least elevated…

Impulse control disorders in women with eating disorders.

We compared symptom patterns, severity of illness, and comorbidity in individuals with eating disorders with and without impulse control disorders (ICD), and documented the temporal pattern of illness onset. Lifetime ICD were present in 16.6% of 709 women with a history of eating disorders. The most common syndromes were compulsive buying disorder and kleptomania. ICD occurred more in individuals with binge eating subtypes, and were associated with significantly greater use of laxatives, diuretics, appetite suppressants and fasting, and with greater body image disturbance, higher harm avoidanc

Excessive dependency and depression: is the relationship specific?

Excessive dependency has been hypothesized to be both a risk factor and a complication of depression. The purpose of this study was to test the specificity of the relationship between DSM-III-R dependent personality disorder (DPD) and depressive disorders. Two hundred subjects were independently administered the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-III-R (SCID) and the Personality Disorder Examination (PDE) face-to-face by two experienced clinicians. Comorbidity of DPD and axis I disorders of five different types was examined. Dependent personality disorder was associated with mood disorders,
