Estimates of pedestrian exposure to atmospheric pollution using high-resolution modelling in a real traffic hot-spot.

Atmospheric pollution is a very relevant risk for the human health, in particular in urban environments, where most people lives and high levels of pollution are found. Population exposure is traditionally estimated through concentration recorded at air quality monitoring stations (AQMS) or modelled at a spatial resolution of the order of 1 km2. However, these methodologies have limitations in urban areas where strong gradients of concentration, even in the same street, exist. In addition, the movements of pedestrians make difficult to compute reliable estimates of pollutant concentration to w

Supporting shared hypothesis testing in the biomedical domain.

BACKGROUND: Pathogenesis of inflammatory diseases can be tracked by studying the causality relationships among the factors contributing to its development. We could, for instance, hypothesize on the connections of the pathogenesis outcomes to the observed conditions. And to prove such causal hypotheses we would need to have the full understanding of the causal relationships, and we would have to provide all the necessary evidences to support our claims. In practice, however, we might not possess all the background knowledge on the causality relationships, and we might be unable to collect all

Beat-to-beat P-wave morphological variability in patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation: an in silico study.

AIMS: P-wave beat-to-beat morphological variability can identify patients prone to paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (AF). To date, no computational study has been carried out to mechanistically explain such finding. The aim of this study was to provide a pathophysiological explanation, by using a computer model of the human atria, of the correlation between P-wave beat-to-beat variability and the risk of AF. METHODS AND RESULTS: A physiological variability in the earliest activation site (EAS), on a beat-to-beat basis, was introduced into a computer model of the human atria by randomizing the E

Patient specific CFD models of nasal airflow: overview of methods and challenges.

Respiratory physiology and pathology are strongly dependent on the airflow inside the nasal cavity. However, the nasal anatomy, which is characterized by complex airway channels and significant individual differences, is difficult to analyze. Thus, commonly adopted diagnostic tools have yielded limited success. Nevertheless, with the rapid advances in computer resources, there have been more elaborate attempts to correlate airflow characteristics in human nasal airways with the symptoms and functions of the nose by computational fluid dynamics study. Furthermore, the computed nasal geometry ca

Parameter Identification of Multispan Rigid Frames Using a Stiffness Separation Method.

Identifying the parameters of multispan rigid frames is challenging because of their complex structures and large computational workloads. This paper presents a stiffness separation method for the static response parameter identification of multispan rigid frames. The stiffness separation method segments the global stiffness matrix of the overall structure into the stiffness matrices of its substructures, which are to be computed, thereby reducing the computational workload and improving the efficiency of parameter identification. Loads can be applied individually to each separate substructure

Hydrogen-bonded molecular trimers: Vibration-tunneling states and low-frequency spectra from rigorous high-dimensional quantum calculations.

Noncovalently bound molecular trimers, held together by hydrogen-bonded and van der Waals interactions, are the smallest clusters in which the three-body interactions can manifest. Accurate description of these nonadditive interactions is of great importance since they play a crucial role in shaping the energetics, structural, and dynamical properties of condensed phases. Molecular trimers offer a unique opportunity for quantifying the three-body interactions through the comparison of the trimer vibration-tunneling states and spectra computed accurately on a high-level many-body potential ener

Enabling Autonomous Data Annotation in Mammography Image: A Human-in-the-Loop Reinforcement Learning Approach.

The vast majority of work in computer vision focuses on developing and applying new machine learning models, which often rely on large amounts of labeled training data. However, annotation is costly and time-consuming. This paper presents an approach based on Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) to automatically generate new annotations and reduce human effort in the preparation of training data for supervised learning models in object detection. Our methodology introduces a virtual agent trained with human guidance, inspired by constructivist teaching methods, where interaction with a human teac

An in Silico, Biomarker-Based Method for the Evaluation of Virtual Neuropsychiatric Drug Effects.

The recent explosion in neuroscience research has markedly increased our understanding of the neurobiological correlates of many psychiatric illnesses, but this has unfortunately not translated into more effective pharmacologic treatments for these conditions. At the same time, researchers have increasingly sought out biological markers, or biomarkers, as a way to categorize psychiatric illness, as these are felt to be closer to underlying genetic and neurobiological vulnerabilities. While biomarker-based drug discovery approaches have tended to employ in vivo (e.g., rodent) or in vitro test s

Computational fluid dynamics for vascular assessment in hepatobiliopancreatic surgery: a pilot study and future perspectives.

INTRODUCTION: In major hepatobiliopancreatic surgery, an accurate preoperative planning is essential. Postoperative impaired blood supply due to arterial disease or variants can cause postoperative complications. Computational fluid dynamics has previously been successful in revealing distinct features of haemodynamic disturbances. The purpose of our study is to describe the feasibility of a computational fluid dynamics model to predict hepatic artery flow and its variations following gastroduodenal (GDA) or common hepatic (CHA) artery ligation. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This is a pilot study inc

Quantum deep reinforcement learning for clinical decision support in oncology: application to adaptive radiotherapy.

Subtle differences in a patient's genetics and physiology may alter radiotherapy (RT) treatment responses, motivating the need for a more personalized treatment plan. Accordingly, we have developed a novel quantum deep reinforcement learning (qDRL) framework for clinical decision support that can estimate an individual patient's dose response mid-treatment and recommend an optimal dose adjustment. Our framework considers patients' specific information including biological, physical, genetic, clinical, and dosimetric factors. Recognizing that physicians must make decisions amidst uncertainty in

Inferring Gene Regulatory Networks in Stem Cells: Methods and Applications.

Gene regulatory networks (GRNs) represent the complex interplay of transcription factors, regulatory elements, and target genes that orchestrate cellular identity and function, playing a crucial role in the differentiation and maintenance of stem cells. This chapter provides an overview of experimental and computational methodologies for inferring GRNs, with particular emphasis on single-cell approaches. We first review key experimental techniques for detecting transcription factor binding sites, chromatin accessibility, and DNA motifs, alongside essential databases that support GRN reconstruc

Measurement of maize stalk shear moduli.

Maize is the most grown feed crop in the United States. Due to wind storms and other factors, 5% of maize falls over annually. The longitudinal shear modulus of maize stalk tissues is currently unreported and may have a significant influence on stalk failure. To better understand the causes of this phenomenon, maize stalk material properties need to be measured so that they can be used as material constants in computational models that provide detailed analysis of maize stalk failure. This study reports longitudinal shear modulus of maize stalk tissue through repeated torsion testing of dry an

Spherical harmonics to quantify cranial asymmetry in deformational plagiocephaly.

Cranial deformation and deformational plagiocephaly (DP) in particular affect an important percentage of infants. The assessment and diagnosis of the deformation are commonly carried by manual measurements that provide low interuser accuracy. Another approach is the use of three-dimensional (3D) models. Nevertheless, in most cases, deformation measurements are carried out manually on the 3D model. It is necessary to develop methodologies for the detection of DP that are automatic, accurate and take profit on the high quantity of information of the 3D models. Spherical harmonics are proposed as

Spectrum of Models for Assessing the Cost Effectiveness of Total Knee Replacement Implants: A Comparison of Discrete-Time Cohort Markov and Continuous-Time Individual-Level Multistate Models.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: A primary elective total knee replacement is routinely used for patients with advanced osteoarthritis. Knee implants differ in characteristics (constraint, fixation, mobility), costs, need for revisions and other health outcomes, and so models evaluating their relative cost effectiveness are required to optimise decision making. Economic modelling approaches differ in complexity, the simplest in use being discrete time Markov models (DTMMs). Continuous-time Markov models (CTMMs) can capture transition timing in finer detail, and can more flexibly relax the constant ha
