The impact of stress on fear memory retention: A meta-analysis of rodent fear conditioning studies.

Pavlovian fear conditioning is a widely used behavioural task for studying fear memory in rodents. During conditioning, rodents learn to associate a conditioned stimulus (e.g., context or tone; contextual or auditory fear conditioning, CFC or AFC, respectively) with an aversive one (e.g., footshock), resulting in a conditioned fear response. Fear memory retention is assessed thorough freezing behaviour, a species-specific defensive reaction, observed during exposure to the conditioned stimulus alone. Fear memory is influenced by sex and stress, with stress exposure prior to conditioning potent

Response-independent outcome presentations dissociate stimulus and value based choice.

A stimulus that predicts the delivery of a specific food outcome can bias performance towards instrumental actions that earn that same outcome in a phenomenon known as specific Pavlovian-instrumental transfer (PIT). The precise mechanism by which the specific instrumental action is selected under these circumstances has remained elusive. The present set of experiments explored whether treatments that undermine the response-outcome (R-O) association also affect the expression of specific PIT. Consistent with previous work, in Experiment 1 we showed that specific PIT remains intact after an inst

Learning potentiates neurophysiological and behavioral placebo analgesic responses.

Expectation and conditioning are supposed to be the two main psychological mechanisms for inducing a placebo response. Here, we further investigate the effects of both expectation, which was induced by verbal suggestion alone, and conditioning at the level of N1 and N2-P2 components of CO2 laser-evoked potentials (LEPs) and subjective pain reports. Forty-four healthy volunteers were pseudorandomly assigned to one of three experimental groups: Group 1 was tested with verbal suggestion alone, Group 2 was tested with a conditioning procedure, whereby the intensity of painful stimulation was reduc

Fear conditioning: Insights into learning, memory and extinction and its relevance to clinical disorders.

Fear, whether innate or learned, is an essential emotion required for survival. The learning, and subsequent memory, of fearful events enhances our ability to recognise and respond to threats, aiding adaptation to new, ever-changing environments. Considerable research has leveraged associative learning protocols such as contextual or auditory forms of fear conditioning in rodents, to understand fear learning, memory consolidation and extinction phases of memory. Such assays have led to detailed characterisation of the underlying neurocircuitry and neurobiology supporting fear learning processe

[Functional somatic diseases--a review].

Functional somatic illness is a clinical concept used to define medically unexplained somatic symptoms considered to express psychological distress. Functional somatic illness may express underlying psychiatric disorders (e.g. fibromyalgia due to non-fearful panic disorder, irritable bowel syndrome due to bipolar disorder). Sustained physiological activation caused by stressful life events combined with catastrophic thinking may be another cause. Functional somatic illness may also be caused by classic conditioning of physiological responses that may have been triggered by biological or emotio

Self-report measures of fear learning and extinction and their association with internet-based cognitive behavioural therapy outcome.

Despite the widespread use of cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT), only about half of patients respond favourably. Understanding whether relevant psychological processes are associated with treatment response could help identify patients at risk of non-response prior to treatment and improve their outcomes by enabling clinicians to tailor interventions accordingly. Fear conditioning tasks are a valuable tool for studying the learning processes associated with anxiety disorders and their treatment. This study examined associations between outcomes from a remote fear conditioning task and respon

Posttraumatic stress disorder in electric burn patients.

It was hypothesized that burn injuries electric in origin may have a poor prognosis for rehabilitation and return to work. Ten electrically injured burn patients were compared to seven patients whose burns were nonelectric, after all 17 had shown clinically significant emotional problems during rehabilitation. Results of psychological tests from both groups were also compared to results in three other groups: psychiatric, chronic pain, and blepharospasm patients. Results indicated that patients with electric burns had the most severe psychopathologic symptoms and the least likelihood of return

STIMULUS ASPECTS OF AVERSIVE CONTROLS: THE EFFECTS OF RESPONSE CONTINGENT SHOCK.

A tone ending with electrical shock was periodically presented to pigeons while they pecked a key for food. Pairs of birds were run simultaneously under a yoked program which insured that both birds received the same number and temporal distribution of shocks. For one of the birds, shock was always initiated by a peck; for the other, shock was unavoidable. Both procedures led to reduced rates of pecking in the presence of the tone, and gradients of stimulus generalization were obtained. But the effects of response contingent shock extinguished more rapidly than the effects of unavoidable shock

'Nonspecific' rather than 'nonassociative' pathways to phobias: a commentary on Poulton and Menzies.

This commentary attempts to clarify the nature of contemporary associative accounts of phobias, and to describe how they might contribute to the explanation of the diversity of phobic aetiologies. It is argued that conditioning-equivalent associations underpin all phobic conditions, and that the role of experimental psychopathology research is to determine how these associations are acquired. The commentary then proceeds to discuss some of the theoretical problems with the nonassociative account of phobias as it is currently described by Poulton and Menzies, and to suggest that some interpreta

Test-retest reliability during fear acquisition and fear extinction in humans.

AIMS: Classical fear conditioning and extinction has been used to understand the neurobiology of fear learning and its inhibition. The recall of an extinction memory involves the ventromedial prefrontal cortex and the amygdala, and patients with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) have been shown to exhibit deficits in this process. Furthermore, extinction forms the basis of exposure therapies commonly used to treat PTSD patients. It is possible that effective pharmacological and/or psychological treatment regimens could influence the activity of these regions, and thereby increase the abilit

Sex differences in the effects of mild traumatic brain injury and progesterone treatment on anxiety-like behavior and fear conditioning in rats.

Mild traumatic brain injuries (mild TBIs) commonly occur in young adults of both sexes, oftentimes in high-stress environments. In humans, sex differences have been observed in the development of post-concussive anxiety and PTSD-like behaviors. Progesterone, a sex steroid that has neuroprotective properties, restores cognitive function in animal models following more severe TBI, but its effectiveness in preventing the psychological symptoms associated with mild TBI has not been evaluated. Using a model of mild TBI that pairs a social stressor (social defeat) with weight drop, male and naturall

Neuropsychobiology of fear-induced bradycardia in humans: progress and pitfalls.

In the last century, the paradigm of fear conditioning has greatly evolved in a variety of scientific fields. The techniques, protocols, and analysis methods now most used have undergone a progressive development, theoretical and technological, improving the quality of scientific productions. Fear-induced bradycardia is among these techniques and represents the temporary deceleration of heart beats in response to negative outcomes. However, it has often been used as a secondary measure to assess defensive responding to threat, along other more popular techniques. In this review, we aim at pavi

Psychological factors impeding the progress of labor: case observations and the need for a multidisciplinary approach.

OBJECTIVE: This report aims to draw attention to the potential role of psychological factors in impaired labor progression and to highlight the potential value of a multidisciplinary approach, including birth psychotherapy. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed four clinical observations of impaired or arrested labor progression associated with psychological factors without identifiable obstetric pathology. Care involved obstetricians and midwives, with individualized psychological consultation when indicated. RESULTS: The cases involved negative childbirth conditioning, acute grief, fear of

Fears born and bred: toward a more inclusive theory of fear acquisition.

Alleged differences between associative and non-associative perspectives are sometimes more apparent than real. The non-associative model describes a pathway to fear that is complementary to associative pathways. It does not seek to usurp conditioning models as applied to evolutionary-neutral fear. We discuss vexing definitional issues surrounding what qualifies as a conditioning event and what characterises the non-associative pathway. Genetic findings are shown to be consistent with the non-associative model of fear. Following discussion of the relation between stress-diathesis models and th

On nonassociative fear emergence.

Poulton and Menzies have articulated a nonassociative alternative to traditional conditioning theories of phobia emergence. Prompted by their essay, I address several issues including controversies about what counts as a conditioning event, difficulties establishing whether a fear functioned as an adaptation throughout evolutionary history, hazards of attempting to recover conditioning events in the histories of patients, and problems with the contingency view of associative learning.

Insomnia: psychological and neurobiological aspects and non-pharmacological treatments.

Insomnia involves difficulty in falling asleep, maintaining sleep or having refreshing sleep. This review gathers the existing informations seeking to explain insomnia, including those that focus on psychological aspects and those considered neurobiological. Insomnia has been defined in psychological (cognitive components, such as worries and rumination, and behavioral aspects, such as classic conditioning) and physiological terms (increased metabolic rate, with increased muscle tone, heart rate and temperature). From the neurobiological point of view, there are two perspectives: one which pro

The Role of Zinc in Modulating Acid-Sensing Ion Channel Function.

Acid-sensing ion channels (ASICs) are proton-gated, voltage-independent sodium channels widely expressed throughout the central and peripheral nervous systems. They are involved in synaptic plasticity, learning/memory, fear conditioning and pain. Zinc, an important trace metal in the body, contributes to numerous physiological functions, with neurotransmission being of note. Zinc has been implicated in the modulation of ASICs by binding to specific sites on these channels and exerting either stimulatory or inhibitory effects depending on the ASIC subtype. ASICs have been linked to several neur

Impaired discriminative fear conditioning during later training trials differentiates generalized anxiety disorder, but not panic disorder, from healthy control participants.

BACKGROUND: Fear conditioning is implicated as a central psychopathological mechanism of anxiety disorders. People with anxiety disorders typically demonstrate reduced affective discrimination between conditioned danger and safety cues. Here, affective discrimination refers to the ability to selectively display fear to dangerous but not safe situations. Though both generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and panic disorder (PD) are linked to impaired affective discrimination, the clinical phenomenology of these disorders suggests that people with GAD versus PD might be less able to overcome such de
