Human adenoviruses (HAdV) are the main cause of viral conjunctivitis. In Tunisia and North Africa more generally, there is no regular nationwide surveillance program that monitors viruses causing conjunctivitis and keratoconjunctivitis. In this study, we report the results of HAdV screening in conjunctival samples collected for over 14 years in Tunisia. A total of 282 conjunctival samples received between 2000 and 2013 were investigated. Detection and identification of genotype were performed by PCR-sequencing at the hexon gene; 64.5% of samples (n=182) revealed positive by PCR detection witho

PURPOSE: To study the epidemiology of adenovirus type 7 (Ad 7) conjunctivitis and adenovirus type 11 (Ad 11) conjunctivitis in the Japanese population by determining the genome type and sub-genome type.
METHODS: For Ad 7, we used 12 strains from patients with acute viral conjunctivitis and one strain from a patient with pneumonia. For Ad 11, we used 17 strains from patients with acute viral conjunctivitis and 3 strains from patients with cystitis. For Ad 7 genome typing, we used 11 DNA restriction endonucleases (REs) recognizing 6-or 7-base pair sequences, and for Ad 11 genome typing, we used

In this review we present and discuss recent data and provide recommendations for New Zealand practitioners regarding the diagnosis and management of acute infective conjunctivitis. In particular, we discuss clinical predictors of bacterial versus viral conjunctivitis, a potential role for routine conjunctival culture, the benefits of topical antibiotic therapy for bacterial infections, delayed treatment algorithms, choice of topical antibiotic and the restriction of selected patients from work, school or early childhood care.

Adenoviral conjunctivitis is contagious and it should be diagnosed rapidly. Adenoviral ocular infection showed epidemic keratoconjunctivitis due to Ad8 and pharyngoconjunctival fever due to Ad3 but those clinical pictures are changing because of the appearance of new serotypes of adenovirus such as Ad4, 19 and 37 which are related with acute conjunctivitis. The diagnosis of viral infection is generally time consuming and complex. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and immunofluorescent antibody (IFA) test, using monoclonal antibody to adenovirus hexon have been applied for rapid diagnos

While symptoms can be very distressing, patients with conjunctivitis general maintain good vision and recover completely without permanent sequelae. The great majority of cases of conjunctivitis are infectious or allergic in origin. Seen with increasing frequency are external eye diseases related to contact lens wear or prolonged use of ophthalmic medications. The various forms of conjunctivitis are often not associated with pathognomonic features. A thorough history and ophthalmic examination often permit a presumptive diagnosis and initiation of empiric therapy. For example, a chronic bilate

Zika virus (ZIKV) is an emerging flavivirus that causes congenital abnormalities and Guillain-Barré syndrome. ZIKV infection also results in severe eye disease characterized by optic neuritis, chorioretinal atrophy, and blindness in newborns and conjunctivitis and uveitis in adults. We evaluated ZIKV infection of the eye by using recently developed mouse models of pathogenesis. ZIKV-inoculated mice developed conjunctivitis, panuveitis, and infection of the cornea, iris, optic nerve, and ganglion and bipolar cells in the retina. This phenotype was independent of the entry receptors Axl or Mertk
