Abstract: Over a 7-year period, parasites have been collected from 28 species of groupers (Serranidae, Epinephelinae) in the waters off New Caledonia. Host-parasite and parasite-host lists are provided, with a total of 337 host-parasite combinations, including 146 parasite identifications at the species level. Results are included for isopods (5 species), copepods (19), monogeneans (56), digeneans (28), cestodes (12), and nematodes (12). When results are restricted to those 14 fish species for which more than five specimens were examined and to parasites identified at the species level, 109 ho

Okadaic acid was isolated from a strain of Prorocentrum arenarium Faust (Prorocentrales, Dinophyceae) collected from Europa Island (40 degrees 22'E, 22 degrees 20'S, SW Indian Ocean). The presence of okadaic acid in the algal extract was suspected after cytotoxicity and phosphatase 2A inhibition testing. It was confirmed by ADAM derivatization, immunoaffinity extraction and liquid chromatography with fluorimetric detection analysis as well as by liquid microchromatography with mass spectrometric detection. Results indicate that the P. arenarium strain was toxinogenic and could be potentially i

AbstractShips, planes, and other vessels that come to rest on the seafloor introduce metals to the marine environment. Underwater cultural heritage (UCH) sites become important habitats for sessile invertebrates, but the materials they are made from can impact the composition of species living on them. We collected and analyzed images from three sites in Palau (two shipwrecks and one plane wreck from WWII) along with directly adjacent (1-5 m away) naturally occurring coral reefs. Community composition on UCH after ∼80 years of submergence was significantly different from adjacent coral reefs, …

The complexity of coastal habitats could influence the biodiversity in such areas due to the variability of food availability and refuge protection. Coral reefs and macroalgal beds are two important coastal habitats for sustaining a greater abundance of fishes and invertebrates in marine ecosystems because of high productivity and structural refuge. In Hong Kong, there were highly diverse coral communities and seasonal Sargassum beds. A survey of reef fish and gastropod assemblages was conducted in five coral communities and five Sargassum beds in Sai Kung for three dates by SCUBA diving from …

Coral reefs are experiencing rapid transformation under interacting pressures of climate change, direct human impacts, and biological disturbance. Outbreaks of the corallivorous crown-of-thorns sea star (COTS; Acanthaster spp.) are major drivers of coral mortality. In parallel, coral population dynamics are increasingly intertwined with environmental change. This review synthesizes current understanding of pressures facing coral reefs in the Anthropocene and the ecological and physiological traits that underpin COTS success and outbreaks. These include (a) early life stages being far more resi…

Ocean acidification is a growing threat to coral growth and the accretion of coral reef ecosystems. Corals inhabiting environments that already endure extreme diel pCO2 fluctuations, however, may represent acidification-resilient populations capable of persisting on future reefs. Here, we examined the impact of pCO2 variability on the reef-building coral Pocillopora damicornis originating from reefs with contrasting environmental histories (variable reef flat versus stable reef slope) following reciprocal exposure to stable (218 ± 9) or variable (911 ± 31) diel pCO2 amplitude (μtam) in aquaria

Coral reefs provide important economic benefits to coastal businesses, supporting recreation and tourism and protecting property from storms. Yet, these benefits are at risk worldwide as corals decline rapidly, and investment in restoration is lacking. With their direct dependence on coral health, coastal businesses may represent an important sector for funding coral restoration; however, it is unclear whether businesses perceive coral reef services as valuable or themselves as reef stewards. We measured business perceptions of coral health and value in Hawai'i and identified traits correlated…

Episodes of mass coral bleaching have been reported in recent decades and have raised concerns about the future of coral reefs on a warming planet. Despite the efforts to enhance and coordinate coral reef monitoring within and across countries, our knowledge of the geographic extent of mass coral bleaching over the past few decades is incomplete. Existing databases, like ReefBase, are limited by the voluntary nature of contributions, geographical biases in data collection, and the variations in the spatial scale of bleaching reports. In this study, we have developed the first-ever gridded, glo…

With large-scale impacts on coral reefs due to global climatic change projected to increase dramatically, and suitability of many areas for reef growth projected to decrease, the question arises whether particular settings might serve as refugia that can maintain higher coral populations than surrounding areas. We examine this hypothesis on a small, local scale in Honduras, western Caribbean. Dense coral thickets containing high numbers of the endangered coral Acropora cervicornis occur on offshore banks while being rare on the fringing reef on nearby Roatán. Geomorphological setting and commu…

An increase in the intensity and frequency of extreme environmental conditions due to anthropogenic climate change impacts coral reefs through myriad stressors, from elevated sea-surface temperatures to increased storm activity. A reef's response to these disturbances can be influenced by factors including taxonomic composition, life history strategies, or spatial patterning of the reef community members. We explored the disturbance-specific responses of coral reefs by following changes in benthic cover of major functional groups, community assemblage, and the response of common coral taxa at …

Effects of combined rising sea temperature and increasing sea level on coral reefs, both factors associated with global warming, have rarely been addressed. In this ~40 y study of shallow reefs in the eastern Indian Ocean, we show that a rising relative sea level, currently estimated at ~11 mm y-1, has not only promoted coral cover but also has potential to limit damaging effects of thermally-induced bleaching. In 2010 the region experienced the most severe bleaching on record with corals subject to sea temperatures of >31 °C for 7 weeks. While the reef flats studied have a common aspect and a…

Emerging fungal diseases are threatening ecosystems and have increased in recent decades. In corals, the prevalence and consequences of these infections have also increased in frequency and severity. Coral reefs are affected by an emerging fungal disease named aspergillosis, caused by Aspergillus sydowii. This disease and its pathogen have been reported along the Caribbean and Pacific coasts of Colombia. Despite this, an important number of coral reefs worldwide have not been investigated for the presence of this pathogen. In this work, we carried out the surveillance of the main coral reef of…

Climate change poses an existential threat to coral reefs. A warmer and more acidic ocean weakens coral ecosystems and increases the intensity of hurricanes. The wind-wave-current interactions during a hurricane deeply change the ocean circulation patterns and hence potentially affect the dispersal of coral larvae and coral disease agents. Here, we modeled the impact of major hurricane Irma (September 2017) on coral larval and stony coral tissue loss disease (SCTLD) connectivity in Florida's Coral Reef. We coupled high-resolution coastal ocean circulation and wave models to simulate the disper…

Philippine coral reefs have significantly declined over the past 40 years, resulting in reduced coral cover and shifts in the composition of associated organisms. While research on offshore reef systems often focuses on benthic habitat cover and reef fish, limited information remains on post-disturbance macroinvertebrate communities at a local scale. This study examines the impacts of two tropical cyclones on benthic macroinvertebrate communities in Apo Reef Natural Park (ARNP), Philippines. Typhoons Molave and Goni passed through ARNP between October and November 2020, causing extensive reef …

Space limitation leads to competition between benthic, sessile organisms on coral reefs. As a primary example, reef-building corals are in direct contact with each other and many different species and functional groups of algae. Here we characterize interactions between three coral genera and three algal functional groups using a combination of hyperspectral imaging and oxygen microprofiling. We also performed in situ interaction transects to quantify the relative occurrence of these interaction on coral reefs. These studies were conducted in the Southern Line Islands, home to some of the most…

Coral reefs are among the most biologically diverse and economically important ecosystems on the planet. The deposition of massive calcium carbonate skeletons (biomineralization or calcification) by scleractinian corals forms the coral reef framework/architecture that serves as habitat for a large diversity of organisms. This process would not be possible without the intimate symbiosis between corals and photosynthetic dinoflagellates, commonly called zooxanthellae. Carbonic anhydrases play major roles in those two essential processes of coral's physiology: they are involved in the carbon supp…

Coral reefs are ecologically significant habitats. Coral-algal symbiosis confers ecological success on coral reefs and coral-microbial symbiosis is also vital to coral reefs. However, current understanding of coral-microbial symbiosis on a genomic scale is largely unknown. Here we report a potential microbial symbiont in corals revealed by metagenomics-based genomic study. Microbial cells in coral were enriched for metagenomic analysis and a high-quality draft genome of "Candidatus Prosthecochloris korallensis" was recovered by metagenome assembly and genome binning. Phylogenetic analysis show…

Full recovery of coral reefs from tropical cyclone (TC) damage can take decades, making cyclones a major driver of habitat condition where they occur regularly. Since 1985, 44 TCs generated gale force winds (≥17 metres/second) within the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park (GBRMP). Of the hurricane strength TCs (≥H1-Saffir Simpson scale; ≥ category 3 Australian scale), TC Yasi (February, 2011) was the largest. In the weeks after TC Yasi crossed the GBRMP, participating researchers, managers and rangers assessed the extent and severity of reef damage via 841 Reef Health and Impact Surveys at 70 reef…

Microplastic (MP) pollution poses a significant threat to marine ecosystems. Coral reefs, often located near land-based sources of these pollutants, act as potential sinks due to their complex three-dimensional structures. While the interactions between reef-building corals and MPs have been increasingly investigated, the role of coral structural complexity in MP accumulation remains poorly understood. This study investigated the influence of coral structural complexity on MP trapping efficiency under natural conditions, specifically aiming to: I) quantify and characterize MPs trapped by Pocil…

Human activities in tropical watersheds are increasing rates of terrestrial silt and clay deposition to nearshore environments and negatively impacting coral reef ecosystems. We sampled sediment flux across a range of coral reef environments in the US Virgin Islands, Caribbean Sea using standard sediment traps and evaluated the relationship of sediment particle size and quality (organic, carbonate, terrigenous) on coral health. We found high variability in rates of sediment deposition that corresponded temporally to storm and swell events. However, this was driven spatially by distinctions bet
