Failure resistance of single-implant crowns assembled from polyetheretherketone and lithium disilicate abutments and different crown materials after artificial aging.

AIM: The objective of the present study was to investigate the effect of using different materials for the fabrication of implant abutments and crowns on the mechanical behavior of implant-supported single crowns after artificial aging. The materials were tested in different combinations to reveal whether using stiff or resilient materials as an abutment or a crown material might influence the fracture strength of the whole structure. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 40 implants (blueSKY) were restored with identical custom-made CAD/CAM abutments milled out of lithium disilicate or ceramic-r

Fracture strength of preformed zirconia crown and CAD-CAM zirconia, ceramic, and hybrid composite crowns for the restoration of primary molars: An in vitro study.

BACKGROUND: Paediatric-preformed zirconia crowns have been associated with several issues, primarily their inability to be crimped and the need for extensive tooth preparation. Additionally, the capacity to adjust the size, shape, and fit of these crowns is very limited. AIM: To evaluate and compare the fracture strength of four different types of dental crowns intended for paediatric patients. DESIGN: The fracture resistance of four types of paediatric crowns was evaluated using the universal testing machine; freshly extracted primary molars received one of the following: preformed zirconia

Cadmium decreases crown root number by decreasing endogenous nitric oxide, which is indispensable for crown root primordia initiation in rice seedlings.

Cadmium (Cd) is toxic to crown roots (CR), which are essential for maintaining normal growth and development in rice seedlings. Nitric oxide (NO) is an important signaling molecule that plays a pivotal role in plant root organogenesis. Here, the effects of Cd on endogenous NO content and root growth conditions were studied in rice seedlings. Results showed that similar to the NO scavenger, cPTIO, Cd significantly decreased endogenous NO content and CR number in rice seedlings, and these decreases were recoverable with the application of sodium nitroprusside (SNP, a NO donor). Microscopic analy

Sex determination through metric analysis of teeth crown.

Teeth that are resistant to external stimuli and have little diversity for individuals can be an important identification factor. This study aimed to present a method that can be used easily and accurately to identify individuals using their teeth, specifically to determine their sex. In this study, all teeth were extracted from 166 cadavers and, from these teeth, the crown length, mesiodistal width, and buccolingual width were measured using a digital caliper. The measurements were then analyzed using SPSS and MATLAB software. First, tooth crown morphology was compared between males and femal

Esthetic Crown Lengthening: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Excessive gingival display is a common esthetic concern among patients seeking smile enhancement. Altered passive eruption (APE) is a frequent etiologic factor and is characterized by incomplete apical migration of the gingival margin following tooth eruption. Accurate diagnosis and adherence to periodontal biologic principles are essential for achieving stable and predictable outcomes in esthetic crown lengthening (ECL). This article reviews the biologic and surgical principles of ECL, with particular emphasis on APE, and illustrates its management through a clinical case. A 28-year-old syste

Deep-time origin of tympanic hearing in crown reptiles.

The invasion of terrestrial ecosystems by tetrapods (c. 375 million years [Ma]) represents one of the major evolutionary transitions in the history of life on Earth. The success of tetrapods on land is linked to evolutionary novelties. Among these, the evolution of a tympanic ear contributed to mitigating the problem of an impedance mismatch between the air and the fluid embedding sound-detecting hair cells in the inner ear.1,2,3 Pioneering studies advocated that similarities in the tympanic ear of tetrapods could only result from a single origin of this structure in the group,4,5 an idea late

Solvent effects on the motion of a crown ether/amino rotaxane.

Solvents have been recognized as a significant factor for modulating the shuttle of rotaxanes and regulating their functions regarding molecular machines by a lot of published studies. The mechanism of the effects of solvents on the motion of crown ether/amino rotaxanes, however, remains unclear. In this work, a rotaxane, formed by dibenzo-24-crown-8 (C[8]) and a dumbbell-shaped axle with two positively charged amino groups, was investigated at the atom level. Two-dimensional free-energy landscapes characterizing the conformational change of C[8] and the shuttling motions in chloroform and wat

[CME: Crowned-Dens-Syndrome - the Chameleon of Neck Pain].

CME: Crowned-Dens-Syndrome - the Chameleon of Neck Pain Abstract. Crowned Dens Syndrome (CDS) is a rare, under-diagnosed differential diagnosis of acute neck pain. Diagnosis is a challenge in clinical practice due to the similarity of symptoms to other diseases. Knowing this differential diagnosis of acute neck pain, unnecessary examinations and expensive therapy attempts can be avoided with a targeted approach. With this article we would like to sensitize colleagues accordingly.

Effects of crown movement on periodontal biotype: a digital analysis.

Orthodontic treatment has important correlations with periodontal changes. Various mechanical and biological factors are involved in determining such changes, but anatomical and morphological variables, generally addressed as periodontal biotype, play a key role. In measurement of such modifications, digital and non-contact reverse engineering technologies may be of tremendous advantage. The aim of this study is to retrospectively evaluate, in a series of digitized dental casts, some of the parameters addressing periodontal biotype and correlate them to extent and direction of tooth movement.

Adjustment of retention of all-ceramic double-crown attachments.

OBJECTIVES: Double-crown attachments, such as conical crowns (CCs), can retain removable partial prostheses. Digital manufacturing enables the use of innovative materials such as zirconia, and new workflows. The aim of this study was to investigate options for the adjustment of retention forces of all-zirconia CCs. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Single zirconia primary crowns were produced with convergence angles (α) of 3 and 4 degrees, together with monolithic zirconia secondary crowns (n = 8 for α = 3 degrees; n = 8 for α = 4 degrees). Retention was measured by fitting the crowns with forces F = 12

'Mutiny on the crown': two cases of rare cephalic malformations.

The presentation and management of two bizarre congenital cephalic curiosities at the two extremes of the clinical spectrum are discussed herewith. Case 1: presented to us as a neonate with a scalp swelling mirror-imaging her head and face. The journey from clinics to wards and to the operation theatre and to her home is introspected. Case 2: presented to us as dicephalous dibrachius dipus parapagus conjoined twins. The detailed work-up of individual organ systems, the multidisciplinary approach to management and the final outcome are discussed. This is an unsolved mystery for the anatomists,

Crowned Dens Syndrome Associated with Bowel Cleaning for Colonoscopy.

A 77-year-old man was admitted with posterior cervical pain, lumbago, a low-grade fever, and anorexia after bowel cleaning with polyethylene glycol for colonoscopy. Computed tomography of the neck showed calcification of the transverse ligament of the atlas. He was diagnosed with crowned dens syndrome (CDS). His condition improved following treatment with corticosteroids. This represents a rare case of CDS after endoscopy with polypectomy. We should consider CDS in the differential diagnosis of patients with unexplained fever and posterior cervical pain after bowel preparation for colonoscopy.

Crowned dens syndrome: a case report and review of the literature.

The crowned dens syndrome (CDS), also known as periodontoid calcium pyrophosphate dehydrate crystal deposition disease, is typified clinically by severe cervical pain, neck stiffness and atlantoaxial synovial calcification which could be misdiagnosed as meningitis, epidural abscess, polymyalgia rheumatica, giant cell arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, cervical spondylitis or metastatic spinal tumor. Crystalline deposition on cervical vertebrae is less well known disease entity and only a limited number of cases have been reported to date. Authors report a case of CDS and describe the clinical fe

Aesthetic management of a complicated crown fracture: a multidisciplinary approach.

A predictable aesthetic restoration is not limited to the restored teeth; it has to include the gingival unit and its interface with the teeth involved. Orthodontic forced eruption may be a suitable approach without risking the aesthetic appearance in tooth fracture below the gingival attachment or alveolar bone crest. It is a well-documented clinical method for altering the relation between a non-restorable tooth and its attachment apparatus, elevating sound tooth material from within the alveolar socket to create a ferrule effect which is considered to be crucial for the optimal biomechanica

Eighteen cases of crowned dens syndrome: Presentation and diagnosis.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Crowned dens syndrome is an ill-known etiology of acute neck pain. METHODS: We carried out a retrospective study of 18 cases of patients with crowned dens syndrome, assessing clinical and radiological features. RESULTS: The results of our study are comparable to data from the literature. The clinical presentation of acute febrile neck pain, occipital headache and multidirectional stiff neck especially affects women aged over 60. No predisposing factor was recognized. However, a history of peripheral joint chondrocalcinosis may reinforce the diagnosis. In more than 50%
