We report photochromic donor-acceptor Stenhouse adducts (DASAs) capable of fully reversible photoisomerization with visible light in organic solvents including chloroform, acetonitrile and benzene. The rates of photoisomerization and thermal reversion can be tuned by altering the electronics of the donor adduct. X-Ray crystallography and photo-NMR experiments unambiguously establish molecular structures.

Snake and spider venom is a complex mixture that contains proteins, peptides, and small organic and inorganic compounds. In contrast to spider venom, snake venom proteins are well known both functionally and structurally. This work describes methods for purification and crystallization of snake and spider venom toxins and their three-dimensional structure determination by X-ray crystallography.

The molecular formula of a new antimetabolite produced by Streptomyces purpurascens was determined to be C5H5N5O2 by elemental analysis, FD-MS and 13C NMR. Reduction of this antimetabolite with Raney nickel yielded guanine. The antimetabolite was distinguishable from known N-hydroxyguanines by comparison of their UV spectra. The structure of the antimetabolite was finally established to be 7-hydroxyguanine by X-ray crystallography.

The difluoroamino (NF2) group is a highly valuable energetic moiety. This work presents a mild method for converting aromatic ketones into novel gem-difluoramino compounds using Me4NSO3NF2. Their structures were confirmed by spectroscopy and crystallography. Compound 2k exhibits high thermal stability, lower sensitivity, and superior detonation performance, demonstrating its potential as a high-energy oxidizer.

The structure of N-methyl-N'-(pyridin-2-yl)benzene-1,2-di-amine, C12H13N3, at 123 K has ortho-rhom-bic (Pna21) symmetry. The title compound displays an unexpected proton-splitting pattern when studied by 1H NMR spectroscopy. A series of hydroxybenzoic acid derivatives have shown inhibitory activity against carbonic anhydrase (CA). X-ray crystallography shows that these molecules inhibit not by binding the active site metal ion but by strong hydrogen bonding to the metal-bound water nucleophile. The binding mode observed for these molecules is distinct when compared to other non-metal-binding CA inhibitors.

Appendicoliths are commonly found obstructing the lumen of the appendix at the time of appendectomy. To identify factors that might contribute to their formation we investigated the composition of appendicoliths using laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectroscopy, gas chromatography, polarized light microscopy, X-ray crystallography and protein mass spectroscopy. Utilizing internally available functional groups, a simple protocol for the efficient synthesis of phosphorus-based indenes, indenones, benzofurans, and isochromenes via intramolecular cyclization of allene intermediates/precursors is generated; the latter intermediates/precursors are conveniently obtained through aldehyde-, alkylidene-, and hydroxyl-functionalized propargyl alcohols and P(III)-Cl precursors.
