Multi-dimensional integrated dance therapeutics (MIDT) for fall prevention in community-dwelling older adults.

INTRODUCTION: Recent studies advocate for dance interventions that address the physical and psychological factors associated with fall risk. The multi-dimensional integrated dance therapeutics (MIDT) program engages participants in physical, psychological, and environmental interactions within a single dance therapeutics framework, rather than focusing solely on balance, strength, or mobility outcomes; it therefore promotes an integrated approach for fall prevention among community-dwelling older individuals. With the increase in the aging population, there is a growing demand for developing a

Spinous process apophysitis: a cause of low back pain following repetitive hyperextension in an adolescent female dancer.

We report a case of a 13-year-old female dancer with spinous process apophysitis following repetitive microtrauma during end-range hyperextension movements. Following appropriate rest and limitation of hyperextension, she was able to return to her previous level of training. It is important to recognize that numerous diagnostic possibilities arise when presented with a young dancer with back pain. The intention of this case report is to compare and contrast the pertinent clinical and radiologic findings of spinous process apophysitis and its more common and debilitating mimic, spondylolysis. Effects of Arts and Psychomotor Therapies in Personality Disorders. Developing a Treatment Guideline Based on a Systematic Review Using GRADE.

What is the effect of arts and psychomotor therapies, using art, dance, drama, music, movement and body awareness, in personality disorder treatment? This was explored by developing a treatment guideline based on a systematic review using the GRADE system within the context of the Dutch national multidisciplinary guidelines for treatment of personality disorders. Conclusions were formulated by a work group and based on the scientific substantiation and were integrated with other indications in the functioning of arts and psychomotor therapies in personality disorders. The first general search

Perceived Severity and Management of Low Back Pain in Adult Dancers in the United States.

Low back pain (LBP) lifetime prevalence in dancers reportedly ranges from 17% to 88%. Low back pain can have negative secondary consequences on dancers' lives and careers. Still, how LBP impacts dancer function and medical care-seeking behaviors and whether these issues differ across dance genres, is understudied.<br/> Materials and Methods: Two hundred and eight-nine ballet, modern, and hip-hop dancers and teachers (median age: 20.3 years; range: 18 to 69 years) in the United States completed an online 24-question survey assessing LBP related self-reported injury history, impact on their live

[Effect of a physical activity programme in patients with fibromyalgia: a systematic review].

The aim of this review was to determine what type of physical activity programmes have been developed in patients with fibromyalgia and what are its effects and benefits on the degree of pain and quality of life. The search was performed in MEDLINE, Web of Science and SPORTDiscus databases. The word "fibromyalgia" was always used as a criterion for combined search (using "AND" connector) with physical activity, exercise, physical therapy and training (MeSH terms). Of the 2,531 initial results, 33 papers were selected for review. The studies reviewed focus primarily on dance activities, water a

A feasibility study of a home-based ballet-inspired workout program to improve post-stroke physical and cognitive outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Balancing problems and memory loss are common in people after stroke. Growing evidence shows that dance-based interventions may improve the outcomes of gait, stability and cognitive functions among stroke survivors. OBJECTIVES: To establish the feasibility and preliminary effects of a home-based ballet-inspired workout program for stroke survivors. METHODS: Thirty-two adults with a first-ever ischemic or hemorrhagic stroke were randomly assigned to the control or the intervention group, in which they completed an 8-week program grounded on Bandura's principles of self-efficacy an

Effects of Acute Dance and Aerobic Exercise on Drug Craving and Food Reward in Women with Methamphetamine Dependence.

INTRODUCTION: Drug dependence causes an overestimation of drug-related stimuli and an underestimation of non-drug-related stimuli, such as food. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of acute moderate-intensity dance and aerobic exercise on drug craving, appetite, prefrontal neural activation to food cues, and food reward in women with methamphetamine MA dependence. METHODS: Thirty-nine women who met the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition MA dependence criteria participated in the experiment and were randomly assigned to either a dance (n =

Physical, occupational, speech and swallowing therapies and physical exercise in Parkinson's disease.

Former studies on the effects of physical exercise, physical and occupational therapy (PT, OT) and speech and swallowing therapy (ST, SwT) in Parkinson's disease (PD) have demonstrated little or uncertain effects. New pathophysiological concepts have been developed. Recent controlled high-level studies demonstrate improvement of mobility and balance after training of muscular strength and endurance, trunk control, and amplitude and rhythmicity of movements (treadmill). Attentional and cognitive strategies were found to enforce body awareness and improve movement sequences. Dance, sensory (audi

Effects of line dancing and flexibility training on chronic non-specific low back pain among college students: A randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVES: Chronic non-specific low back pain is increasingly common among young adults, yet optimal exercise interventions remain unclear. This study compared two therapies: line dancing-Baduanjin (LD-B), a culturally integrated aerobic exercise, and flexibility training (FT) targeting thoracic and hip mobility. We evaluated their biopsychosocial effects on college students to inform precision-based exercise strategies. METHODS: A single-blind randomized controlled trial was conducted with 84 college students. Participants were assigned to LD-B (n = 23), FT (n = 24), or control (n = 20) gro

Rumba Dance Combined with Breathing Training as an Exercise Intervention in the Management of Stress Urinary Incontinence in Postmenopausal Women: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

Purpose: Stress urinary incontinence (SUI) refers to involuntary leakage from the urethra, synchronous with exertion/effort, sneezing or coughing, which has a negative effect on quality of life. Studies have shown that mild-to-moderate physical activities reduce the risk of SUI by multiple mechanisms. The objective of this study was to determine whether the Rumba dance combined with breathing training (RDBT) can reduce the severity of incontinence and improve the quality of life of patients with SUI. Methods: A randomized clinical trial was conducted with women who were sedentary, were postmen

Long-term outcome in children with opsoclonus-myoclonus and ataxia and coincident neuroblastoma.

We reviewed the neurologic and developmental courses in 10 children with opsoclonus-myoclonus ("dancing eyes syndrome") and neuroblastoma. All patients are alive without evidence of neoplastic disease after 8+ to 111+ months of follow-up. All had localized disease and 50% had extraabdominal tumors. Neuroblastomas of nine children had favorable Shimada histologic characteristics, and all tumors had single copies of the N-myc oncogene. After neuroblastoma resection, all patients had persistent opsoclonus-myoclonus or ataxia that responded to therapy with adrenocorticotropic hormone. Nine childre

Injury in ballet: a review of relevant topics for the physical therapist.

Currently, there is a need for a review of the literature on ballet injury as it pertains to the physical therapist. Relatively few articles have reviewed ballet injury prevalence and mechanisms of injury. The purpose of this paper was to provide a thorough literature review of the prevalence of ballet injury and mechanisms of injury. Environmental factors and footwear relating to ballet injury were also reviewed. The literature indicated that 65-80% of ballet injuries are in the lower extremity, 10-17% occur in the vertebral column, and most of the remaining percentage are upper limb injuries

Fighting social isolation of vulnerable people with dementia through remote group meetings: An experience report.

With the COVID-19 pandemic (WHO, 2020), social distancing became a crucial means to prevent further spread of the disease (Wendy et al, 2020). This raises concerns for dementia care (Wang et al, 2020), as social distancing leads to reduced cognitive stimulation, exercise, social networking and leisure activities (Brown et al, 2020). Active participation in art has shown positive impacts on the psychosocial wellbeing of stroke survivors (Morris et al, 2019). Additionally, engaging with humor potentially improves the memory, communication and self-esteem of people with dementia (PWD) (Stevens, 2

Effectiveness of movement and body awareness therapies in patients with fibromyalgia: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Fibromyalgia is a long-term condition that is associated with widespread pain and is recognized as one of the major common causes of disability. The standard clinical guidance for fibromyalgia includes both pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions. In the latter, different interventions are implemented such as aerobic exercises, flexibility exercises, strength training, stretching and body awareness (BA) therapies. The aims of this review were to provide a summary of movement and BA therapies in patients with fibromyalgia and to compare the different therapies in rel

Looking fear in the eye: Gamified virtual reality exposure towards spiders for children using attention based feedback.

Many children around the globe suffer from spider phobia. Virtual reality exposure therapy is an effective phobia treatment, but so far predominantly tailored for adults. A gamified approach utilizing gaze interaction would allow for a more child-friendly and engaging experience, and provide the possibility to foster working mechanisms of exposure therapy. We developed an application in which children make spiders change in positively connoted ways (e.g., make them dance or shrink) if sufficient visual attention towards them is captured via eye tracking. Thereby, motivation for and positive af

Non-commonly prescribed physical exercises, disciplines and sports in breast cancer survivors: a narrative review.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Physical activity is widely acknowledged as a cornerstone in enhancing the quality of life and recovery outcomes in breast cancer survivors (BCSs). Despite robust guidelines emphasizing a multimodal approach combining aerobic, resistance, flexibility, and balance exercises, adherence to exercise prescriptions remains suboptimal. This narrative review aims to explore the effects of non-commonly prescribed physical exercises, disciplines, and sports to broaden options and improve adherence among BCS. METHODS: A comprehensive literature search was conducted in databases
