Prenatal diagnosis of the Dandy-Walker malformation and ventriculomegaly associated with partial trisomy 9p and distal 12p deletion.

OBJECTIVES: To present the prenatal diagnosis and perinatal findings of partial trisomy 9p and distal 12p deletion. METHODS AND RESULTS: Amniocentesis was performed at 17 gestational weeks due to a balanced reciprocal translocation t(9;12)(p11.2;p13.3) in the mother. The father's karyotype was normal. The family had a 5-year-old daughter with a Dandy-Walker malformation and a trisomy 9p syndrome. Cytogenetic analysis of the cultured amniotic fluid cells revealed a 46,XY,der(12)t(9;12)(p11.2;p13.3)mat karyotype with partial monosomy 12p(12pter-->p13.3) and partial trisomy 9p(9pter-->p11.2). [Joint presentation of facial hemangioma, posterior fossa malformation, and carotid-vertebral hypoplasia (Pascual-Castroviejo syndrome II): report of 2 new cases].

INTRODUCTION: The association of external capillary hemangiomas with intracranial malformations (vascular or nonvascular) was first described by Pascual-Castroviejo in 1978. The commonest anomalies found included: Dandy-Walker syndrome, cerebellar hypoplasia, arterial angiomas and alterations in the origin or distribution of the main cerebral arteries. In 1996 the same author named it the 'hemangiovascular complex syndrome'. The syndrome association is very similar, perhaps even identical, to that recently described in the English literature under the heading of PHACE. CLINICAL CASES: We desc…

Neu-Laxova syndrome: prenatal ultrasonographic diagnosis, clinical and pathological studies, and new manifestations.

A diagnosis of the Neu-Laxova syndrome (NLS) was made by ultrasonography at 32 wks of gestation. Ultrasonographic examination showed intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR), Dandy-Walker anomaly, choroid plexus cysts, receding forehead and microcephaly, bilateral cataract without prominent eyes, scalp edema with no generalized edema, retrognathia, curved penis, and flexion deformities of limbs. The findings in this case are consistent with NLS; however, they did not fit any of Curry's [1982] groups. Massive swelling of hands and feet were among the main manifestations in classic NLS cases. Kabuki syndrome: a Chinese case series and systematic review of the spectrum of mutations.

BACKGROUND: Kabuki syndrome is a rare hereditary disease affecting multiple organs. The causative genes identified to date are KMT2D and KDM … first case series on Kabuki syndrome in Mainland China. Unusual symptoms, such as spinal bifida and Dandy-Walker syndrome, suggested that neurological developmental defects may accompany Kabuki syndrome. This case series helps broaden the mutation spectrum of Kabuki syndrome and adds information regarding the manifestations of Kabuki syndrome.

Marden-Walker syndrome versus isolated distal arthrogryposis: evidence that both conditions may be variable manifestations of the same mutated gene.

In this report we present evidence that Marden-Walker syndrome and isolated distal arthrogryposis may be variable manifestations of the same entity. We describe the clinical and pathological findings in two affected siblings, the first two children of normal, non-consanguineous parents. The first child, a female, presented a typical Marden-Walker syndrome with Dandy Walker type CNS malformation, corpus callosum hypoplasia and enlarged ventricles. In the second pregnancy, echographic examination revealed joint contractures of the hands and feet. Fetopathological examination revealed a normoceph

Differential diagnosis of syndromes with abnormal respiration (tachypnea-apnea).

Abnormal respiration with episodic tachypnea-apnea can occur in several syndromes (particularly, the Rett, Joubert, Mohr and Dandy-Walker syndromes). These syndromes are briefly reviewed. In the Rett syndrome, in contrast to in most other genetically determined syndromes, the onset of breathing abnormalities does not occur in the neonatal period.

Suboccipital Atretic Cephalocele as a Marker for Joubert-Plus Syndrome: An Extended Phenotype of the CPLANE1 Gene Mutation.

Joubert syndrome (JS) is a rare neurological condition characterized by intellectual disability, hypotonia, and an abnormal breathing pattern. MRI brain frequently reveals the presence of the characteristic molar tooth sign. JS is usually inherited in an autosomal recessive manner, although sporadic cases have been reported. JS can present in association with other neurological conditions, such as Dandy-Walker syndrome; this is referred to as Joubert-Plus syndrome. In this report, we will present two patients who presented with a suboccipital swelling following a normal pregnancy and birth by …

[Focus on Dandy-Walker malformation].

The aim of this review is to summarize our knowledge about Dandy-Walker malformation (DWM) and introduce recent notions about its prognosis. DWM is a malformation associating hypoplasia of the vermis, pseudocystic fourth ventricle, upward displacement of the tentorium, torcular and lateral sinuses and anterio-posterior enlargement of the posterior fossa. It is frequently associated with genetic anomalies, brain malformations (anomalies of gyration, grey matter heterotopias, meningoceles, corpus callosum agenesis...) or systemic malformations (heart, orthopedic, intestinal, urogenital and facia

The sonographic diagnosis of Dandy-Walker and Dandy-Walker variant: associated findings and outcomes.

Outcomes of pregnancies with sonographically diagnosed Dandy-Walker (DW) or Dandy-Walker variant (DWV) syndromes vary widely. We examined our own experience with these diagnoses in an effort to identify those sonographic features that best predicted neonatal outcome. We identified 50 fetuses with DW and 49 with DWV diagnosed sonographically. Eighty-six per cent of fetuses with DW and 85% of fetuses with DWV had other sonographically identifiable anomalies, the most common being ventriculomegaly (DW: 32%; DWV: 27%) and cardiac defects (DW:38%; DWV: 41%). Forty-six per cent and 36% of available

[Severe malformations in atypical short-rib polydactyly syndrome (SRP-S)].

A case of atypical short-rib polydactyly syndrome (Majewski) with severe cerebral malformations (infundibular hamartoma, Dandy-Walker cyst, aplasia of cerebellar vermis, etc.) is reported. This seems to be the first case so far described in the literature.

Prenatal presentation of a rare genetic disorder: a clinical, autopsy and molecular correlation.

Walker Warburg syndrome (WWS) lies at the severe end of the spectrum of the congenital muscular dystrophies. WWS is a congenital disorder of the O-glycosylation that disrupts in the post-translation modification of dystroglycan proteins. WWS is characterized by the involvement of the central nervous system and rarely by multisystem involvement. Next-generation sequencing discovered that multiple genes are associated with this disorder. FKTN is the rarest cause of WWS. We describe a clinical-autopsy report of a molecularly- confirmed WWS case presenting with ventriculomegaly, agenesis of the co

CNS midline anomalies in the Opitz G/BBB syndrome: report on 12 Brazilian patients.

We report on 12 Brazilian boys with the Optiz G/BBB syndrome associated with CNS midline anomalies, namely, Dandy-Walker anomaly (two patients), enlarged cisterna magna (four patients), enlarged 4th ventricle (four patients), and callosal a/hypoplasia (two patients). These signs clearly show the involvement of the CNS midline in the Opitz G/BBB syndrome.

Hypothalamic hamartoma, gelastic epilepsy, precocious puberty--a diffuse cerebral dysgenesis.

Childhood epileptic syndrome characterized by early onset gelastic seizures, hypothalamic hamartoma and precocious puberty is well recognized though rare. We report association of agenesis of corpus callosum, Dandy-Walker complex and heterotopic gray matter with this childhood epileptic syndrome which is hitherto an unreported association. The child showed a satisfactory response to gonadotropin releasing hormone agonist.

Upward herniation of the posterior fossa cyst in the shunted child.

Seventy-two years after Dandy and Blackfan's initial description of the Dandy-Walker syndrome, controversies still exist regarding the precise methods of treatment for this disorder. One potential complication of simple lateral ventricular shunting is upward herniation of the posterior fossa cyst, which at times can result in precipitous clinical deterioration. We present three examples of posterior fossa cysts with upward herniation and review the pertinent literature. We advocate contrast studies to determine whether aqueductal communication exists, before shunting is performed, as well as c…
