Ocular abnormalities in deaf children: a discussion of deafness and retinal pigment changes.

In a survey of 78 hearing impaired children, 33% were found to have ocular abnormalities. The abnormalities were relatively minor, the most frequent being altered retinal pigmentation. Although congenital rubella infection was the most common cause of this finding the cause in others was more obscure. Possible causes for hearing loss associated with retinal pigment and other tissue changes are abnormal cilia, abnormalities in cells with similar embryological origins and genetic defects affecting pigmentation.

Cortical deafness following embolic strokes.

Cortical deafness is exceedingly rare and is caused by bilateral failure of the auditory cortices, due to structural damage such as ischaemic stroke, while the peripheral and brainstem auditory structures remain unaffected. We describe a woman who acutely developed bilateral neurosensorial hypoacusis following a bilateral cardioembolic ischaemic stroke, due to takotsubo cardiomyopathy, affecting the primary auditory areas of the temporal lobes. She partially recovered over several months, with noticeably improved auditory function and gradual normalisation of auditory brainstem responses and e…

Vestibular status in partial deafness.

INTRODUCTION: The hair cells of the cochlea and the vestibulum are closely connected and may be susceptible to the same noxious factors. The relationship between their function has been a continuing field of investigation. The indications for cochlear implantation have been broadened and now include the patients with partial deafness. This raises the question of their vestibular status. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to investigate whether there is any difference between the vestibular function of patients with low frequency residual hearing and those with totally deaf ears. METHODS: A …

Cochlear Implantation in Postmeningitic Deafness.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study is to evaluate long-term outcomes of cochlear implantation (CI) in patients with postmeningitic deafness. METHODS: Twenty-seven patients with severe to profound hearing loss due to bacterial meningitis and received CI were the subjects of this study. Surgical findings and long-term audiological performances were evaluated. Speech perception and speech intelligibility of the implanted patients were evaluated with the categories of auditory performance-II (CAP-II) test and speech intelligibility rating (SIR) test, respectively. RESULTS: Eighteen of the 27 patient…

[Recurrent low frequency sensorineural deafness].

Low frequency sensorineural deafness is a common subtype of idiopathic sudden deafness. Certain patients suffered recurrent attacks without vertigo, much alike Meniere's disease. Few of them developed into definite Meniere's disease during long-term follow-up in many clinical studies. Although the pathophysiology of recurrent low frequency deafness is yet unknown, the desease is considered associated with early state of endolymphatic hydrops or migraine. Otologists shall be aware of its clinical course and careful explanation is necessary at time of initial informed consent.

Cochlear implantation in postmeningitic deafness.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: To propose guidelines in the management of a profound bilateral sensorineural hearing loss after bacterial meningitis. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective chart review. PATIENTS: All 40 postmeningitic cochlear implantation surgeries performed between August 1987 and April 2007. METHODS: Descriptive analysis of data on the cause of meningitis, preoperative imaging evaluation, age at implantation, time elapsed between meningitis and implantation, and relevant surgical findings. RESULTS: Twenty-seven children and 13 adults with postmeningitic deafness were implanted. Mean age w…

Keratitis-ichthyosis-deafness (KID) syndrome.

A 21-year-old man presented with a life-long history of diffusely thickened skin with a grainy-to-ridged surface, verrucous perioral plaques with radial fissures, and diffuse palmoplantar keratoderma with a stippled appearance. These skin findings were accompanied by sensorineural hearing loss and keratoconjunctivitis, a clinical triad diagnostic of keratitis-ichthyosis-deafness (KID) syndrome. The patient also had a history of recurrent infections and cysts on the scalp. This report draws attention to inflammatory nodules (representing ruptured folliculitis), cysts, and recurrent infections o…

Sudden deafness: is it viral?

A number of theories have been proposed to explain the etiopathogenesis of idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss (ISSHL), including viral infection, vascular occlusion, breaks of labyrinthine membranes, immune-mediated mechanisms and abnormal cellular stress responses within the cochlea. In the present paper, we provide a critical review of the viral hypothesis of ISSHL. The evidence reviewed includes published reports of epidemiological and serological studies, clinical observations and results of antiviral therapy, morphological and histopathological studies, as well as results of ani

[Deafness at Wiskott-Aldrich-syndrome].

INTRODUCTION: The Wiskott-Aldrich-syndrome belongs to the phakomatoses. The hereditary transmission happens x-chromosomal recessive in the domain of Xp 11.3-Xp 11.22. Clinical evidence for that is given by thrombocytopenia, an eczema and a weakness of the immune system with a subsequent increased risk of frequent infections and a predisposition for a malignancies. A further characteristic of that disease is recurrent otitis media as described by Aldrich in 1954. PATIENT: The case--as described above--is about a 28-year-old male patient developing an acute deafness on the left ear while he has…

Deafness in paediatric age group.

Incidence and predominant causes of deafness in 20 neonates, 100 infants and 1340 school going population in the northern region of the Indian subcontinent, was investigated by the E. N. T. Department, of Dayanand Medical college and Hospital, Ludhiana, Punjab. The recorded incidence of deafness in school going children was 12.16% comprising conductive loss (98%) and S. N. loss 2%. Out of many cases more notable were chronic rhinitis, tonsillitis, adenoiditis etc.

X-linked Dystonia-Deafness syndrome.

We report a family with early-onset deafness and progressive dystonia exclusively involving males over two successive generations. There is also evidence of cognitive impairment and corticospinal tract involvement. The pedigree suggests an X-linked inheritance. A similar family was originally described by Scribanu and Kennedy. Tranebjaerg et al. have recently reported two other families with linkage to Xq22 and also proposed a novel X-linked candidate gene. These findings support the existence of a distinct neurodegenerative syndrome principally characterized by early-onset deafness and progre…
