Exercise-with-melatonin therapy improves sleep disorder and motor dysfunction in a rat model of ischemic stroke.

Exercise-with-melatonin therapy has complementary and synergistic effects on spinal cord injury and Alzheimer’s disease, but its effect on stroke is still poorly understood. In this study, we established a rat model of ischemic stroke by occluding the middle cerebral artery for 60 minutes. We treated the rats with exercise and melatonin therapy for 7 consecutive days. Results showed that exercise-with-melatonin therapy significantly prolonged sleep duration in the model rats, increased delta power values, and regularized delta power rhythm. Additionally, exercise-with-melatonin therapy improve

Experimental cortical stroke induces aberrant increase of sharp-wave-associated ripples in the hippocampus and disrupts cortico-hippocampal communication.

The functional consequences of ischemic stroke in the remote brain regions are not well characterized. The current study sought to determine changes in hippocampal oscillatory activity that may underlie the cognitive impairment observed following distal middle cerebral artery occlusion (dMCAO) without causing hippocampal structural damage. Local field potentials were recorded from the dorsal hippocampus and cortex in urethane-anesthetized rats with multichannel silicon probes during dMCAO and reperfusion, or mild ischemia induced by bilateral common carotid artery occlusion (CCAO). Bilateral c

Cortical Auditory-Evoked Responses in Preterm Neonates: Revisited by Spectral and Temporal Analyses.

Characteristic preterm EEG patterns of "Delta-brushes" (DBs) have been reported in the temporal cortex following auditory stimuli, but their spatio-temporal dynamics remains elusive. Using 32-electrode EEG recordings and co-registration of electrodes' position to 3D-MRI of age-matched neonates, we explored the cortical auditory-evoked responses (AERs) after 'click' stimuli in 30 healthy neonates aged 30-38 post-menstrual weeks (PMW). (1) We visually identified auditory-evoked DBs within AERs in all the babies between 30 and 33 PMW and a decreasing response rate afterwards. (2) The AERs showed

Silent Circuit: Incidental Finding of Wolff-Parkinson-White Pattern in Late Pregnancy Complicated by Severe Preeclampsia.

Wolff-Parkinson-White (WPW) pattern is a rare conduction abnormality that may predispose to supraventricular tachyarrhythmias and sudden cardiac death. A 37-year-old gravida 2 para 1 woman at 35+6 weeks gestation, admitted with preterm labor and new-onset preeclampsia, developed transient chest tightness and dyspnea. Electrocardiography revealed sinus rhythm with short PR interval (the duration between the onset of atrial depolarization and the onset of ventricular depolarization), widened QRS complex (duration of ventricular depolarization), and delta wave consistent with ventricular preexcit

Proportional feedback stimulation for seizure control in rats.

PURPOSE: A responsive electrical brain stimulation system using control feedback was investigated for the treatment of seizures. METHODS: A proportional feedback stimulation system was designed. Penicillin-induced episodic seizures were created in rat primary motor cortex. Both intracranial (proximal to seizure focus) and extracranial EEGs were monitored. Current stimulation was applied at the seizure focus by using the intracranial EEG as the current-stimulus template. Different gains (H) for determining feedback stimulus amplitudes were tested. RESULTS: The effect of feedback stimulation o

Electrocardiographical case. A case of wide complex tachycardia.

A 43-year-old Chinese woman complained of a one week history of irregular rapid palpitations associated with chest discomfort and dyspnoea. Her heart rate was more than 160 beats per minute and blood pressure was 154/95 mmHg. 12-lead electrocardiogram (ECG) showed a wide complex tachycardia with a slightly irregular rhythm. Delta waves were also present. She was treated appropriately with intravenous procainamide but developed torsades de pointes secondary to prolonged QT interval. Electrophysiology study revealed atrial tachycardia with a left-sided accessory pathway which was successfully ab

Age-related characteristics of brain development in children living in the north.

The morphofunctional age-related development of the brain was studied in schoolchildren living in the difficult climatological-geographic an … ainly in the frontal and temporal lobes of the brain, with increases in the levels of the theta and delta rhythms, and the absence of any marked "functional nucleus" in the alpha rhythm. In the remaining 14 children (29%), EEG measures showed more marked delays in mental development (DMD), which were combined with learning difficulties and abnormal behavior. T …

Comparison of electroencephalogram between propofol- and thiopental-induced anesthesia for awareness risk in pregnant women.

There have been few comparative studies using electroencephalogram (EEG) spectral characteristics during the induction of general anesthesia for cesarean section. This retrospective study investigated the differences in the depth of anesthesia through EEG analysis between propofol- and thiopental-induced anesthesia. We reviewed data of 42 patients undergoing cesarean section who received either thiopental (5 mg/kg) or propofol (2 mg/kg). EEG data were extracted from the bispectral index (BIS) monitor, and 10-second segments were selected from the following sections: 1) Stage I, BIS below 60 af

Delta-beta correlation as a candidate endophenotype of social anxiety: A two-generation family study.

BACKGROUND: Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is characterized by an extreme and intense fear and avoidance of social situations. In this two-generation family study we examined delta-beta correlation during a social performance task as candidate endophenotype of SAD. METHODS: Nine families with a target participant (diagnosed with SAD), their spouse and children, as well as target's siblings with spouse and children performed a social performance task in which they gave a speech in front of a camera. EEG was measured during resting state, anticipation, and recovery. Our analyses focused on two c

Sleep spindles: an overview.

Sleep spindles are a distinctive EEG phasic feature of NREM sleep and are prevalent during stage 2 as compared to slow wave sleep. While the neurophysiological mechanisms of spindle generation, that involves thalamic and corticothalamic networks, have been recently delineated and are briefly reviewed, their definitive functional meaning still remains to be elucidated. This review summarizes the present knowledge on visually scored and automatically detected spindles, as well as the literature on EEG power in the sigma band. Among the factors known to affect sleep spindles and sigma activity, t

Transient global amnesia: clinical and electroencephalographic findings in 10 cases.

We studied 10 patients with transient global amnesia (TGA). Routine electroencephalograms (EEGs) were normal in six; two showed mild temporal lobe abnormalities, one had bitemporal delta activity with rare sharp waves, and one showed bioccipital rhythmic theta activity. Nasopharyngeal (NP) recordings were obtained in seven patients; five showed independent mesial temporal spike discharges during drug-induced sleep. The discharges are probably due to transient ischemia in deep temporal structures.

Assessment of the central chemosensitivity in man under transient or progressive hypercapnia.

In healthy man, the central chemosensitivity to CO2 was studied after depression of the arterial chemoreflex drive by inhalation of pure oxygen. The effectiveness of the functional decrease of arterial chemoreceptor function was assessed by the delayed hyperventilation which followed transient inhalation of hypercapnic gas mixtures for 3 or 5 breaths in hyperoxic conditions. In such a case the first significant increase in tidal volume (VT) occurred 13.9 +/- 3.2 (SE) sec later than the early change in this variable measured in normoxic conditions. The stimulus strength was estimated by the cha

Instability of post-respiratory delta activity is associated with neurocognitive dysfunction in obstructive sleep apnea.

BACKGROUND: Conventional polysomnographic severity indices poorly capture inter-individual vulnerability to neurocognitive dysfunction in obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Although respiratory event-related physiological responses have recently gained attention, whether instability of these neural responses reflects impaired cortical resilience and contributes to cognitive dysfunction remains unknown. METHODS: We performed a secondary analysis of baseline polysomnographic data from the Apnea Positive Pressure Long-term Efficacy Study (APPLES), including 1077 adults with OSA. Event-related EEG re

Region-specific non-rapid eye movement delta activity is associated with stroke recovery.

Neural activity in the delta range (1.0-4.5 Hz) during non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep is crucial for brain plasticity and overall brain health. Recent research has shown that changes in NREM delta activity can occur locally, and activity can vary across different brain regions. Ischemic stroke results in focal brain injury and long-term disability. While sleep disruption during the acute phase of stroke is known to hinder recovery, the relationship between region-specific changes in NREM delta activity and functional recovery remains poorly understood. To investigate these localized chang

Temporal intermittent δ activity: a marker of juvenile absence epilepsy?

PURPOSE: To report three cases of juvenile absence epilepsy (JAE) with temporal intermittent, asynchronous delta activity over the temporal regions. METHODS: Long term video-EEG using the international 10/20 system and supplementary anterior-inferior temporal electrodes. Cohort of 1123 patients included in our active file seen at least one time over one year. RESULTS: Among 23 patients with JAE (2% of our active file), temporal intermittent rhythmic delta activity (TIRDA) was observed in 3 (13%). Moreover, this activity was never observed in 80 patients with juvenile myoclonic epilepsy. None

Pregnenolone enhances EEG delta activity during non-rapid eye movement sleep in the rat, in contrast to midazolam.

Several endogenous steroids exert their neuroactivity through non-genomic effects and act as potent GABAA receptor-agonists or-antagonists. To examine the influence of the main precursor of these steroids on sleep-wake behaviour, pregnenolone (400 micrograms) was dissolved in oil and administrated s.c. to 8 rats at the beginning of the light period. For comparison, the benzodiazepine midazolam was also injected (3 mg/kg). The effects on the amounts of the vigilance states and on the EEG signals within each state were investigated during 24 hours. Compared to control vehicle, pregnenolone did n

[The significance of rhythmic mid-temporal discharges (author's transl)].

Out of 50,000 EEG's those of 38 subjects contained rhythmic mid-temporal discharges (RMTD), corresponding to an incidence of 0,1%. The morphological features of RMTD are: 1. frequency: 5.5-6.5/sec 2. shape: monophasic and regular with occasionally interposed 12/sec. activity. 3. localisation: mid temporal, often spread to anterior, seldom posterior region. 4. occurence: bilateral, simultaneous, or alternating sides. They are closely linked to the drowsy state, occuring at the transition from A2 to B2 stage (IA2) and arising from a fairly desynchronized EEG. RMTD are commonly seen within REM pe
