Enamel, being the hardest and the highest mineralized tissue of the human body, contains nearly 96% inorganic components and 4% organic compounds and water. Dentin contains 65% inorganic components and 35% organic and water content. The translucency and white appearance of enamel are attributed to Hydroxyapatite (HA), which constitutes the major part of the inorganic component of dental hard tissue. With the advent of nanotechnology, the application of Nanohydroxyapatite (nHA) has piqued interest in dentistry due to its excellent mechanical, physical, and chemical properties. Compared to HA, n…

Nanoparticles based on metal and metallic oxides have become a novel trend for dental applications. Metal nanoparticles are commonly used in dentistry for their exclusive shape-dependent properties, including their variable nano-sizes and forms, unique distribution, and large surface-area-to-volume ratio. These properties enhance the bio-physio-chemical functionalization, antimicrobial activity, and biocompatibility of the nanoparticles. Copper is an earth-abundant inexpensive metal, and its nanoparticle synthesis is cost effective. Copper nanoparticles readily intermix and bind with other met…

Halitosis has become a major concern, as it is the third most common reason for dental visits and affects individuals across all ages, genders, and ethnicities. Only a few limited studies have explored the prevalence and etiology of halitosis in the pediatric population. Therefore, the aim of this review was to identify the etiological factors influencing the widespread occurrence of halitosis in pediatric dentistry in order to guide therapy based on the identified causes, thereby improving children's quality of life. The etiology of halitosis is multifactorial; however, in most cases, halitos…

In recent years, nanoparticles (NPs) have been receiving more attention in dentistry. Their advantageous physicochemical and biological properties can improve the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of numerous oral diseases, including dental caries, periodontal diseases, pulp and periapical lesions, oral candidiasis, denture stomatitis, hyposalivation, and head, neck, and oral cancer. NPs can also enhance the mechanical and microbiological properties of dental prostheses and implants and can be used to improve drug delivery through the oral mucosa. This paper reviewed studies from 2015 to 20…

Over the past century, there is perhaps no greater contribution to the practice of clinical dentistry than the development and application of local anaesthesia. What were once considered painful procedures have now been made routine by the deposition and action of local anaesthetics. This article will serve as a review of basic pharmacological principles of local anaesthesia, subsequent sequelae that can arise from their use, considerations when using local anaesthetics, and recent advances in the delivery of local anaesthetics.

In modern dental practice, the use of sedation to eliminate the fear and anxiety of the patient has become frequent. Unfortunately, according to the legislation, the concept of sedation is inseparable from anesthesia and it can only be performed by an anesthesiologist in a group or Department of Anesthesiology and Resuscitation. The article is devoted to a detailed comprehensive review of sedation in dental and surgical interventions in the maxillofacial area. It details the physiological and pathophysiological data of stress and psycho-emotional discomfort. The article indicates drugs for sed

The recent enormous progress in understanding of plasma physics and development of plasma jet has attracted focus on the application of plasma in medicine and dentistry. Active plasma ions, electrons, and photons have the ability to activate and control various biochemical procedures. Nonthermal plasma (NTP) is widely used for various therapeutic applications in health care. Particularly in dentistry, NTP holds big potential such as for bacterial inactivation, efficient sterilization, and treatment of dental caries. This review intends to provide information on potential NTP applications in de…

Aloe vera (Aloe barbadensis) is a plant that belongs to Liliaceae family. The name Aloe derives from the Arabic word "Alloeh" meaning shining bitter substance while "vera" in Latin means true. It contains various minerals and vitamins. It has got various properties such as immunomodulatory, antiviral and antiinflammatory in nature. A. vera can play a significant role in dentistry in treatment of lichen planus, oral submucous fibrosis, recurrent aphthous stomatitis, alveolar osteitis, periodontitis, etc.

The aim of this article was to provide the dental community with a brief overview of the characteristics, risk of transmission, and the infection-control implications of prions in dentistry. MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, The Cochrane Library, and relevant databases were searched, and a targeted internet search was conducted up to July 2007. Transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs) are a group of fatal neurodegenerative diseases that are rapidly progressive and always fatal, with no approved cure, and their definite diagnosis can only be obtained at post mortem autopsy. The causative agent, …

BACKGROUND: Information on the reproductive effects of chemical exposures in dental work is sparse or inconsistent.
AIM: To investigate whether dental workers exposed to acrylate compounds, mercury amalgam, solvents or disinfectants are at an increased risk of miscarriage.
METHODS: The study was conducted among women dental workers and a comparison group of workers occupationally unexposed to dental restorative materials. Information on pregnancies was obtained from national registers and outpatient units of hospitals. Data on occupational exposure were obtained using postal questionnaires.

Increasing emphasis is being placed in dentistry, as in other areas, on outcome-based education and on the specification of learning outcomes. This paper describes the adaptation for dentistry of the medical three circle model as described by Harden to specify learning outcomes. The model offers an effective and user-friendly format based on the three dimensions of the work of a dentist. What the dentist is able to do ('doing the right thing'), how the dentist approaches their practice ('doing the thing right'), and the dentist as a professional ('the right person doing it'). The model also fa…

OBJECTIVES: Azithromycin has recently replaced clindamycin oral suspension for prop hylaxis of infective endocarditis (IE) in children. It is also currently recommended by the American Heart Association as an alternative to penicillin, along with clindamycin for prophylaxis of infective endocarditis in adults. The objectives of this paper were to firstly, review the current literature on the efficacy of azithromycin as a suitable prophylactic agent in the prevention of infective endocarditis; and secondly, to review its pharmacological properties as a suitable therapeutic agent in the manageme

There is an abundance of dental professionals with work-related pain and dysfunction. Dentistry poses a huge challenge because of the ergonomics of dental work. The biggest risk factors are the awkward prolonged seated postures with no back support and the limited range of motion and isometric muscle contraction created by working in a confined area, namely the mouth. The following manuscript offers exercises that constitute a preventive program to target the typical problem areas of the dental professional--the neck, lower back and wrist/hand.
