BACKGROUND: Drug-influenced gingival overgrowth is an unaesthetic overgrowth of gingiva principally associated with intake of drugs like phenytoin, cyclosporin A and nifedipine. Its occurrence in both dentate and edentulous regions of oral cavity is poorly understood.
OBJECTIVES: This report highlights clinical and histological description, aetiology and management of gingival overgrowth in a partially edentulous (non-denture wearer) 60-year-old female patient with epilepsy on phenytoin and phenobarbital drugs from past 7 years.

A sample of 170 responsive residents of seniors housing centres in Winnipeg, Canada, were studied, (>65 years, mean 82 years), with the objectives of relating their dental state to their perception of need and uptake of service. Only 6% rated their oral health as poor, 46% reported a dental visit within the previous year and 68% felt they needed dental treatment. Edentulous patients with maxillary defects face a more challenging oral rehabilitation process than dentate patients. With the use of mini dental implants (MDIs), it is now possible to immediately increase obturator retention and stability. PURPOSE: The success of zygomatic implants following the two-stage, as well as the immediate loading, concept has been well documented. This graftless approach for the treatment of the completely edentulous resorbed maxilla allows for rehabilitation with an implant-supported fixed prosthesis. The purpose of this prospective study is to report on the 7-year follow-up of patients treated with zygomatic implants in conjunction with two to four anterior maxillary implants placed into immediate function and restored with a definitive fixed prosthesis.

The fabrication of meatal obturator prosthesis with titanium framework using a 1-step final impression procedure is described in the case of a 44-year-old woman with congenital absence of the soft palate. The meatus obturator results in a more stable maxillary prosthesis and permits acceptable speech for a patient with total absence of the soft palate. The fabrication technique is relatively easy and saves time by eliminating some laboratory procedures.

Osteonecrosis of the jaws following the use of bisphosphonate drugs has been reported in the literature. Presently, there is limited evidence to establish guidelines for the prosthodontic management of patients with active osteonecrosis, a history of osteonecrosis, or medical history of using these medications. This clinical report reviews the current literature regarding bisphosphonate use, and reports the prosthodontic treatment of an edentulous patient with active osteonecrosis who had a history of oral bisphosphonate use and jaw irradiation.

This clinical report describes an unusual situation of nasal discharge that was initially considered to be caused by a leaking obturator prosthesis in a partially repaired cleft palate patient. Ultimately, the diagnosis was rhinorrhea induced by the loading of dental implants that supported the obturator. The differential diagnoses of nasal irritation, blocking of nasal drainage posterior or anterior through a premaxillary defect, vasomotor rhinitis, and gustatory rhinorrhea are presented and discussed, as well as the measures taken to reach the final diagnosis.
