Perioral dermatitis.

Perioral dermatitis is a relatively common inflammatory disorder of facial skin, often appearing in patients with rosacea, but with less inflammation. A typical perioral dermatitis presentation occurs with the eruption of papules and pustules confined to the nasolabial folds and the skin of the chin. Clinically, small pink papules and pustules may recur over weeks to months, sometimes with fine scales. The differential diagnosis includes seborrheic dermatitis, systemic lupus erythematosus, acne vulgaris, lupus miliaris disseminatus faciei, steroid-induced rosacea, and even basal cell carcinoma…

Seborrheic dermatitis.

Seborrheic dermatitis is a common chronic inflammatory skin condition, characterized by scaling and poorly defined erythematous patches. It may be associated with pruritus, and it primarily affects sebum-rich areas, such as the scalp, face, upper chest, and back. Although its pathogenesis is not completely understood, some postulate that the condition results from colonization of the skin of affected individuals with species of the genus Malassezia (formerly, Pityrosporum). A variety of treatment modalities are available, including eradication of the fungus, reducing or treating the inflammato…

Perioral dermatitis.

Perioral dermatitis is an inflammatory facial skin disorder that predominantly affects women. It is rarely diagnosed in children. The etiology of perioral dermatitis is unknown; however, uncritical use of topical corticosteroids often precedes skin lesions. There is a written diagnostic work-up, differential diagnosis and treatment.

Parthenium dermatitis.

Parthenium hysterophorus and Tanacetum parthenium, members of the Compositae family, are important causes of allergic contact dermatitis due to plants. Parthenium dermatitis is a major problem in India and Australia. Parthenium hysterophorus causes a spectrum of clinical patterns. Parthenium dermatitis, in its classical form known as airborne contact dermatitis, primarily affects the exposed areas and the flexures. Other clinical patterns are a seborrheic pattern, widespread dermatitis, and exfoliative dermatitis. The trend of the clinical pattern is changing. The classic airborne contact derm…

Tefillin dermatitis.

Tefillin (phylacteries) are a religious article worn by observant Jewish men. Only two cases of allergic contact dermatitis from tefillin have been reported previously. We describe 7 new cases of tefillin contact dermatitis and review the literature on contact allergy caused by religious objects and practices. All our patients had contact allergy to potassium dichromate, which was the only allergen relevant to tefillin .

[Periocular dermatitis].

BACKGROUND: Perioral dermatitis paradoxically sometimes spares the entire perioral region. There may be isolated periocular involvement (periocular dermatitis). PATIENTS/METHODS: The records of 23 patients with only periocular dermatitis were reviewed with respect to the following parameters: clinical findings, history of atopy, topical facial treatment, prick and patch tests, CAP-SX1, previous treatment, time to healing and relapses. 23 patients with no history of periocular dermatitis were matched for age and sex (case-control study). RESULTS: The predominant clinical finding in the affect…

[Cercarial dermatitis].

A POTENTIAL PUBLIC HEALTH PROBLEM: Cercarial dermatitis is caused by the infestation of the skin by cercariae of nonhuman schistosomes whose commonest hosts are aquatic birds. Human contamination can occur during swimming in fresh water infested with cercariae and notably ducks. Its geographic distribution is worldwide and is increasingly described in France during the summer months. FROM A CLINICAL POINT OF VIEW: A diffuse eruption composed of prurigenous maculopapules appears within the 24 hours following exposure. Regression is spontaneous within one day to three weeks. PREVENTION IS ADVISA…

Dermatitis herpetiformis.

Dermatitis herpetiformis is a chronic, lifelong disease characterized both by symptomatic, characteristic skin lesions and by a gluten-sensitive, often asymptomatic, enteropathy. Cutaneous findings include intensely pruritic vesicles on symmetrical extensor locations. Treatment for disease may be pharmacologic agents or a gluten-free diet. Evidence for the genetic basis of disease has been elucidated.

[Dermatitis herpetiformis].

Dermatitis herpetiformis is characterised by an intensely itchy, chronic, papulovesicular eruption, usually on elbows, knees and buttocks. The diagnosis is based on granular IgA deposits in the dermal papillae in a perilesional skin biopsy analysed by immunofluorescence microscopy. Most patients have subclinical celiac disease; a gluten-free diet is effective in most cases. IgA antibodies against tissue transglutaminase (TG2) may be involved in the pathogenesis of celiac disease with or without dermatitis herpetiformis, and an epidermal transglutaminase (TG3) may be the autoantigen in dermatit…

Seborrheic dermatitis.

Seborrheic dermatitis is present in 1% to 3% of immunocompetent adults, and is more prevalent in men than in women. Seborrheic dermatitis may be seen in conjunction with other skin diseases, such as rosacea, blepharitis or ocular rosacea, and acne vulgaris. Malassezia yeasts have been associated with seborrheic dermatitis. Abnormal or inflammatory immune system reactions to these yeasts may be related to development of seborrheic dermatitis. Treatment modalities for seborrheic dermatitis include keratolytic agents, corticosteroids, and more recently, antifungal agents. Antifungal agents do not…

Dermatitis artefacta?

A 35-year-old man presented with a 2-month history of intensely pruritic excoriated and crusted linear lesions on the dorsa of the left hand and left forearm (Fig 1). The patient had worked in construction for 2 years, and his job consisted mainly in covering the facades of buildings with cement. The patient was right-handed and used a black rubber glove as a protective measure only on his left hand (Fig 2). He reported that the lesions resolved partially during holidays and weekends and clearly flared in association with his work. There was no history of atopic dermatitis, drug use, or intole…
