Allergen immunotherapy (AIT) is an effective treatment for patients with allergic diseases; it has been shown to modify the underlying cause of the disease. The house dust mite (HDM) is a major perennial allergen source and a significant cause of allergic-related diseases such as allergic rhinitis, asthma, and atopic dermatitis. PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Progestogen hypersensitivity (PH) is a rare disorder which usually occurs in women of childbearing age with symptoms ranging from urticaria with or without angioedema, multiple organ involvement consistent with allergic anaphylaxis, to a spectrum of other non-evanescent skin eruptions. We treated 14 patients with severe pollinosis or allergic rhinitis with its specific allergen by the sublingual route. Increasing doses of the allergen were given as drops. There was marked improvement in allergic symptoms in 12. Sneezing, itching of the eyes and rhinitis were practically absent, even in the season and there was substantial reduction in intake of antihistamines as well as in the use of steroid inhalers. Only 1 patient did not improve, while 1 developed severe urticaria to Parietaria judaica vaccine.

Tender nodules may develop at the site of injection of allergen extracts. Some cases can be related to the aluminium contained in the preparation. We report a case where scar sarcoidosis developed at the site of desensitization injections. At presentation, there were no other cutaneous signs of sarcoidosis; systemic signs only developed 2 years later. We suggest that sarcoidosis be considered as a cause of granulomata developing at sites of desensitizing injections, particularly when aluminium is not involved.
