Acidic matrix macromolecules are intimately involved in biological crystal growth. In vitro experiments, in which crystals of calcium dicarboxylate salts were grown in the presence of aspartic acid-rich proteins, revealed a stereochemical property common to all the interacting faces. Calcite crystals are nucleated on stereochemically analogous faces when proteins are adsorbed onto a rigid substrate. The importance of this property in biomineralization is discussed.

The reaction of triarylantimony diacetates [Ar3Sb(OAc)2] with dialkyl H-phosphites [H-PO(OR)2] in the presence of a Pd(PPh3)4 (5 mol%) catalyst led to the formation of arylphosphonates in moderate to excellent yield under base-free conditions. This reaction is the first example of carbon-phosphorus bond formation by using an organoantimony compound as a pseudo-halide.

We assessed the omega-oxidation of a spectrum of fatty acids in rats and asked whether pretreatment of rats with aspirin, which is known to predispose children to Reye's syndrome, would affect omega-oxidation of long chain fatty acids. In this study, hydrogels containing azelaic acid were developed using chitosan or HPMC (1-7%) for local treatment of acne vulgaris. Physicochemical properties such as viscosity, pH and mechanical properties were evaluated. In vitro release and ex vivo permeability studies were performed using the Franz diffusion cell system. The pH of the hydrogels was highly compatible with the skin pH and varied between 4.38 and 5.84.
