Diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging is effective to detect ileocolonic ulcerations in Crohn's disease.

BACKGROUND: Magnetic resonance entero-colonography enables accurate assessment of ileocolonic Crohn's disease, but the need for bowel cleansing and rectal enema limits considerably its use in daily practice. AIM: We evaluated the accuracy of diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance entero-colonography with neither bowel cleansing nor rectal enema to assess endoscopic activity. METHODS: Forty-four Crohn's disease patients underwent prospectively and consecutively diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance entero-colonography [with apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) and Clermont score calculation] a

Normal Values of Diffusion Tensor Magnetic Resonance Imaging Parameters in the Cervical Spinal Cord.

STUDY DESIGN: Prospective study. PURPOSE: We evaluated the usefulness of diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) in diagnosing patients with cervical myelopathy by determining the accuracy of normal DTI parameter values. OVERVIEW OF LITERATURE: DTI can visualize white matter tracts in vivo and quantify anisotropy. DTI is known to be more sensitive than conventional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in detecting subtle pathological changes of the spinal cord. METHODS: A total of 31 normal subjects (13 men and 18 women; age, 23-87 years; mean age, 46.0 years) were included in this study. The patients h

Role of diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging in the evaluation of scalp dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans.

BACKGROUND: Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DFSP) is a rare tumor that grows with tentacle-like projections. In particular, on the scalp this could explain the frequent incomplete resections and the high rate of multiple local recurrences. Adequate pre- and postoperative imaging methods to visualize these prolongations are required to determine the extent of the tumor and to intercept recurrences in a short time base. METHODS: A retrospective study was performed on two cases of multiple recurrent scalp DFSP. The use of diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) for pre- and postoperative assessment of

Predictive value of diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging during chemoradiotherapy for uterine cervical cancer.

AIM: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of diffusion-weighted (DW) magnetic resonance (MR) imaging to predict the tumor response to chemoradiotherapy (CRT) of uterine cervical cancer. METHODS: Twenty-five consecutive patients with pathologically confirmed uterine cervical cancer underwent 1.5-T MR imaging including DW imaging before and during CRT. MR images were reviewed for the size and apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC). Pathological evaluation of the therapeutic effect was performed 3 months after finishing CRT, and we divided the subjects into two groups: complete r

Secondary neurolymphomatosis detected by whole-body diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging: a case report.

Neurolymphomatosis (NL) is a rare clinical entity defined as peripheral nervous system infiltration by lymphoma. The diagnosis is difficult and often elusive. Whole-body diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (DW MRI) was developed to enhance the detection of vaguely delineated tumors. Here, we describe the case of a 71-year-old male with secondary NL of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) that was successfully detected by whole-body DW MRI. The patient was diagnosed with DLBCL extending from the ethmoidal sinus to the nasal cavity, orbital cavity, and anterior cranial fossa. Although

Diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging in the upper abdomen: technical issues and clinical applications.

Recent technological achievements have enabled the transposition of diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) with good diagnostic quality into other body regions, especially the abdomen and pelvis. Many emerging and established applications are now being evaluated on the upper abdomen, the liver being the most studied organ. This article discusses imaging strategies for DWI on the upper abdomen, describes the clinical protocol, and reviews the most common clinical applications of DWI on solid abdominal organs.

Acute ischemic injury on diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging after poor grade subarachnoid hemorrhage.

BACKGROUND: Poor clinical condition is the most important predictor of neurological outcome and mortality after subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). Rupture of an intracranial aneurysm was shown to be associated with acute ischemic brain injury in poor grade patients in autopsy studies and small magnetic resonance imaging series. METHODS: We performed diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (DWI) within 96 h of onset in 21 SAH patients with Hunt-Hess grade 4 or 5 enrolled in the Columbia University SAH Outcomes Project between July 2004 and February 2007. We analyzed demographic, radiological

Distal embolization after stenting of the vertebral artery: diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging findings.

PURPOSE: We retrospectively evaluated our experience with stenting of the vertebral artery in an effort to determine the risk of distal embolization associated with the procedure. METHODS: Between June 2000 and May 2005, 35 patients with 38 stenting procedures for atherosclerotic disease of the vertebral origin in our institution were identified. The average age of the patients was 60.3 years (range 32-76 years). Sixteen of these patients (with 18 stents) had MR imaging of the brain with diffusion-weighted imaging and an apparent diffusion coefficient map within 2 days before and after proced

Diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging of white matter in bipolar disorder: a pilot study.

OBJECTIVE: Diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has shown increased sensitivity in detecting brain white matter disease compared to traditional T2-weighted MRI. Diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) can quantitatively assess the microstructural integrity of white matter using the average apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC(av)), a measure of the extent to which water molecules move freely within tissue. On the basis of numerous studies suggesting white matter disease in bipolar patients, particularly patients with more severe illness, this study aimed to test the utility of DWI in as

Cerebral white matter degeneration in frontotemporal dementia detected by diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVE: Brain tissue damage in frontotemporal dementia (FTD) has never been systematically studied using diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI). We studied FTD patients using DWI to determine whether microstructural changes in white matter can be detected in vivo. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirteen FTD patients and 15 aged healthy subjects were studied. Mean diffusivity (MD) abnormalities in 28 white matter regions were visually evaluated. In addition, MD values in 10 white matter regions relative to that in the ipsilateral postcentral gyrus were measured. The results were compared be

[Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease: alterations in an isolated cortical signal in diffusion magnetic resonance imaging].

INTRODUCTION: Neuroimaging is playing an increasingly important role in the diagnosis of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD), as shown by the fact that it is giving rise to the exclusion of other processes and providing invaluable diagnostic data -above all alterations in the signal in basal ganglia and in the cerebral cortex. CASE REPORTS: Case 1: A 66-year-old male who had symptoms of rapidly progressing cognitive impairment that began in the occipital region, with ataxia and myoclonias. The electroencephalogram (EEG) recordings revealed the presence of periodic biphasic sharp waves, and determ

Sensitivity of diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging in the diagnosis of acute lacunar infarcts.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Heightened interest in the early diagnosis and treatment of acute stroke challenges neuroimaging specialists to optimize available modalities and to develop new techniques for the evaluation of cerebrovascular disease. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the sensitivity of diffusion-weighted (DW) magnetic resonance (MR) imaging in detecting early small infarcts and in differentiating acute from nonacute small infarcts when conventional MR imaging demonstrates multiple small infarcts. METHODS: Thirty-eight consecutive patients with a clinical diagnosis of lacunar

Knowledge-based tensor anisotropic diffusion of cardiac magnetic resonance images.

We present a general formulation for a new knowledge-based approach to anisotropic diffusion of multi-valued and multi-dimensional images, with an illustrative application for the enhancement and segmentation of cardiac magnetic resonance (MR) images. In the proposed method all available information is incorporated through a new definition of the conductance function which differs from previous approaches in two aspects. First, we model the conductance as an explicit function of time and position, and not only of the differential structure of the image data. Inherent properties of the system (
