BACKGROUND: The acceptance criteria used for living kidney donors are largely theoretical, as they are not clearly linked to outcomes. The goal of this study was to use implantation biopsies as a surrogate outcome marker to evaluate our living kidney donor selection criteria.
METHODS: One thousand six hundred sequential living kidney donor biopsies were performed between 2001 and 2011. Implantation biopsies were assessed by dedicated renal pathologists according to the Banff criteria. Biopsies with any chronic score of 2 or higher were deemed to have moderate to severe changes (MSC).

A novel class of 1-C-arylglycals was developed and subjected to N-iodosuccinimide-mediated glycosylations with alcohols. Unexpectedly, all reactions provided 2-iodo-β-D-ketopyranosides in high yields and excellent stereoselectivity. After removal of the 2-iodide by radical conditions, the aryl group was smoothly oxidized to provide the corresponding β-Kdo glycosides. A mechanism for the stereoselective formation of β-D-ketopyranosides was proposed, which was supported by evidence from X-ray crystallography.

BACKGROUND: To better balance the safety of the blood supply and the inclusion of men who have sex with men (MSM), further improvements are needed to the risk management strategy employed in the Netherlands to reduce transfusion-transmissible infections (TTIs). A gender-neutral individual risk assessment could provide a solution by determining donor eligibility based on sexual behaviors known to increase the risk of TTIs. Our objective is to estimate the proportion of blood donors that would be deferred by such an assessment, as well as their discomfort answering such questions.
