Misuse of prescription and illicit drugs among high-risk young adults in Los Angeles and New York.

BACKGROUND: Prescription drug misuse among young adults is increasingly viewed as a public health concern, yet most research has focused on student populations and excluded high-risk groups. Furthermore, research on populations who report recent prescription drug misuse is limited. This study examined patterns of prescription drug misuse among high-risk young adults in Los Angeles (LA) and New York (NY), which represent different local markets for illicit and prescription drugs. DESIGN AND METHODS: Between 2009 and 2011, 596 young adults (16 to 25 years old) who had misused prescription drugs …

Hair analysis as a novel investigative tool for the detection of historical drug use/misuse in the horse: a pilot study.

REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY: Analysis of human hair for drug residues is being used increasingly as a diagnostic tool in the investigation of drug use and abuse. Hair analysis is complementary to urine/blood testing in that it can provide an extensive historical record of drug use, is noninvasive, impersonal and can facilitate retesting. However, the technique has not been studied in horses. HYPOTHESIS: That the systemic administration of drugs in horses could be identified by the detection of drug residues in hair. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate hair analysis as a potential retrospective diagnosti

Disparities in Use/Misuse of Specific Illicit and Prescription Drugs among Sexual Minority Adults in a National Sample.

Background: Compared to heterosexual adults, lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) adults have higher rates of any illicit drug use and any prescription drug misuse, yet disparities regarding specific drugs remain poorly characterized. Methods: We examined disparities by sexual identity and sex for 8 illicit and prescription drugs using 2015-2019 National Survey on Drug Use and Health data. Outcomes included past-year use/misuse of cocaine/crack, hallucinogens, inhalants, methamphetamine, heroin, prescription opioids, prescription stimulants, prescription tranquilizers/sedatives, and level of polyd…

A Membrane-Modulated Centrifugal Microdevice for Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay-Based Detection of Illicit and Misused Drugs.

Increased opioid use and misuse have imposed large analytical demands across clinical and forensic sectors. Due to the absence of affordable, accurate, and simple on-site tests (e.g., point of interdiction and bedside), analysis is primarily conducted in centralized laboratories via time-consuming, labor-intensive methods. Many healthcare facilities do not have such analytical capabilities and must send samples to commercial laboratories, increasing turnaround time and care costs, as well as delaying public health warnings regarding the emergence of specific substances. Enzyme-linked immunosor

Affected family member coping with a relative with alcohol and/or other drug misuse: A cross-sectional survey questionnaire.

Families have a crucial role supporting a relative with alcohol and/or other drug misuse, but the role has adverse implications for family members' coping, which in turn, affects their ability and willingness to support the relative. The aim of this study was to assess the coping behaviours of affected family members of relatives with alcohol and/or other drug misuse and to assess if there was a relationship between the level of coping and family member type and support-giving experience. A cross-sectional survey design was used, and 90 respondents completed the questionnaire. Results suggest …

The Joint Commission and the FDA take steps to curb adverse events related to the use and misuse of opioid drugs.

Alarmed by adverse events involving opioid drugs, the Joint Commission has issued a Sentinel Alert urging hospitals to take steps to improve safety in the prescribing of these powerful drugs. In addition, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has launched an initiative that will soon require the manufacturers of long-acting and extended-release opioids to offer education and training to physicians and others who prescribe these pharmaceuticals. The Joint Commission reports that of the opioid-related adverse events reported to the agency between 2004 and 2011, 47% involved wrong-dosage medicat

Exploring Human Misuse and Abuse of Veterinary Drugs: A Descriptive Pharmacovigilance Analysis Utilising the Food and Drug Administration's Adverse Events Reporting System (FAERS).

INTRODUCTION: Evidence suggests an increasing misuse of veterinary medicines by humans. This study aims to analyse Adverse Events (AEs) associated with selected veterinary products using the Food and Drug Administration Adverse Events Reporting System (FAERS). METHODS: A descriptive pharmacovigilance analysis was conducted on AEs related to 21 drugs approved for human and/or animal use. RESULTS: A total of 38,756 AEs, including 9566 fatalities, were identified. The United States reported the highest number of cases (13,532), followed by Canada (2869) and the United Kingdom (1400). Among the

New trends of drug abuse in custodial settings: A systematic review on the misuse of over-the-counter drugs, prescription-only-medications, and new psychoactive substances.

The article presents a systematic literature review on the use and the psychiatric implications of over-the-counter drugs (OTC), prescription-only-medications (POM), and new psychoactive substances (NPS) within custodial settings. The searches wer carried out on 2 November 2022 on PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science in line with PRISMA guidelines. A total of 538 records were identified, of which 37 met the inclusion criteria. Findings showed the most prevalent NPS and OTC and POM classes reported in prisons were synthetic cannabinoids receptor agonists (SCRAs) and opioids, respectively. NPS mar

Prescription drug misuse and risk factors among Somali adolescents: a qualitative study exploring peer influence, stress, and academic pressure.

BACKGROUND: Drug misuse among adolescents is a growing public health concern in Somalia, with prescription drug abuse emerging as a significant issue. This behavior is influenced by a complex interplay of psychological, social, and environmental factors, including peer pressure, academic stress, and community dynamics. Understanding these factors is essential for designing effective interventions to mitigate the rising trend of substance abuse among Somali youth. METHODS: This qualitative study employed in-depth interviews (IDIs) and key informant interviews (KIIs) to explore the motivations …

Empowerment in prevention: a qualitative inquiry into Black girl-centred strategies for reducing HIV/STI and drug misuse risk.

Black girls in the United States are disproportionately diagnosed with sexually transmitted infections (STIs), which can increase the risk of contracting HIV (human immunodeficiency virus), compared to adolescent girls of other races. Therefore, this study was designed to understand barriers to impactful HIV/STI and substance use prevention programmes for Black girls. Data was collected between October 2021 and June 2022 from twelve focus groups which included (N = 62) participants who identified as Black and female between the ages of 13 and 18 years old. Using intersectionality theory as a g

Recreational marijuana laws and the misuse of prescription opioids: Evidence from National Survey on Drug Use and Health microdata.

Several studies have concluded that legalizing medical marijuana can reduce deaths from opioid overdoses. Drawing on micro data from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health, a survey uniquely suited to assessing patterns of substance use, we examine the relationship between recreational marijuana laws (RMLs) and the misuse of prescription opioids. Using a standard difference-in-differences (DD) regression model, we find that RML adoption reduces the likelihood of frequently misusing prescription opioids such as OxyContin, Percocet, and Vicodin. However, using a two-stage procedure designed

Prospective associations of alcohol and drug misuse with suicidal behaviors among US Army soldiers who have left active service.

BACKGROUND: This study examines the prospective associations of alcohol and drug misuse with suicidal behaviors among service members who have left active duty. We also evaluate potential moderating effects of other risk factors and whether substance misuse signals increased risk of transitioning from thinking about to attempting suicide. METHOD: US Army veterans and deactivated reservists (N = 6,811) completed surveys in 2016-2018 (T1) and 2018-2019 (T2). Weights-adjusted logistic regression was used to estimate the associations of binge drinking, smoking/vaping, cannabis use, prescription d…

Experiences of sexist discrimination as a potential explanatory factor for alcohol and drug misuse among Latina young adult women.

RATIONALE: Marianismo beliefs, or traditional female gender role beliefs among Latinas, have been found to serve as risk or protective factors linked with health risk behaviors in prior studies, including alcohol and drug misuse. However, limited research has examined potential factors that may contribute to or explain these associations. Sexist discrimination, which can serve as a significant stressor that may contribute to substance misuse, is one potential factor that may link marianismo beliefs and substance misuse among Latina young adult women. OBJECTIVE: This study examined sexism as a…

Prescription Drug Misuse with Alcohol Coingestion among US Adolescents: Youth Experiences, Health-related Factors, and Other Substance Use Behaviors.

BACKGROUND: While alcohol use and prescription drug misuse (PDM) are common among adolescents, there is relatively little research on coingestion. This is disquieting as polysubstance use has become a major contributing factor in drug overdose deaths among young people in the United States. METHODS: The current research uses multiple years of data from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (2015-2019) to assess characteristics associated with coingestion among adolescents aged 12 to 17 years ( N = 57,352). Multinomial logistic regression analysis is used to identify characteristics assoc…
