An epornitic of duck plague on a Wisconsin game farm.

In April, 1973, an acute disease with a high rate of mortality appeared in a flock of 233 ducks and geese at a private game farm. Most of the flock (220) were black ducks (Anas rubripes) and mortality was restricted to them. In May, the remaining live birds were placed in isolation but mortality continued in black ducks and occurred in other species. The overall rate of mortality for black ducks was 93% and the case fatality rate was 97%. No hemorrhaging from either the bill or vent was observed. The most commonly observed gross lesions were extensive fibrino-necrotic plaques covering the muco…

Outbreak of duck plague (duck herpesvirus enteritis) in numerous species of captive ducks and geese in temporal conjunction with enforced biosecurity (in-house keeping) due to the threat of avian influenza A virus of the subtype Asia H5N1.

The continuing westward spread of avian influenza A virus of the subtype H5N1 in free-living and domestic birds forced the European Union and the German federal government to enhance all biosecurity measures including in-house keeping of all captive birds from October 20 to December 15, 2005. Movement of captive ducks and geese of many different species from a free-range system to tight enclosures and maintenance for prolonged times in such overcrowded sheds resulted in pronounced disturbance of natural behaviour, interruption of mating and breeding activities and possibly additional stress. U…

Inhibitory effect of curcumin on duck tembusu virus.

Duck Tembusu virus (DTMUV) is a significant etiological agent responsible for egg production decline in laying ducks and retarded growth in ducklings, contributing to considerable economic losses in the poultry sector. Current research mainly focuses on the development of vaccines for the prevention of DTMUV. However, there is relatively little research on antiviral drugs against this virus. Curcumin has been reported to exert antiviral effects against multiple viruses. However, its efficacy against DTMUV remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the antiviral activity of curcumin again…

Advancements in Research on Duck Tembusu Virus Infections.

Duck Tembusu Virus (DTMUV) is a pathogen of the Flaviviridae family that causes infections in poultry, leading to significant economic losses in the duck farming industry in recent years. Ducks infected with this virus exhibit clinical symptoms such as decreased egg production and neurological disorders, along with serious consequences such as ovarian hemorrhage, organ enlargement, and necrosis. Variations in morbidity and mortality rates exist across different age groups of ducks. It is worth noting that DTMUV is not limited to ducks alone; it can also spread to other poultry such as chickens…

Genomic Epidemiology and Evolution of Duck Hepatitis A Virus.

Duck hepatitis A virus (DHAV), an avian picornavirus, causes high-mortality acute disease in ducklings. Among the three serotypes, DHAV-1 is globally distributed, whereas DHAV-2 and DHAV-3 serotypes are chiefly restricted to Southeast Asia. In this study, we analyzed the genomic evolution of DHAV-1 strains using extant GenBank records and genomic sequences of 10 DHAV-1 strains originating from a large disease outbreak in 2004-2005, in Hungary. Recombination analysis revealed intragenotype recombination within DHAV-1 as well as intergenotype recombination events involving DHAV-1 and DHAV-3 stra

Assessment of the immune response to duck plague vaccinations.

An experiment was conducted to assess the immune responses of ducks to duck plague (DP) vaccinations employing one commercial and one laboratory-adapted (LA) DP vaccines. Virus neutralisation and leucocyte migration-inhibition tests were conducted at regular intervals before and after vaccinations. Similarly, ducks in vaccinated and control groups were subjected to challenge infection with virulent DP virus. The commercial vaccine yielded a poor immune response and partial protection on challenge whereas satisfactory responses were obtained in ducks receiving two doses of LA vaccine. The humor…

A solitary case of duck plague in a wild mallard.

Duck plague was diagnosed on the basis of pathology and virus isolation in a wild female mallard Anas platyrhynchos found dead near Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Day-old Pekin ducklings and one of two adult mallards died with lesions typical of duck plague following inoculation of tissue from the wild bird. This is believed to be the only reported case of duck plague in a wild bird since a major outbreak occurred in South Dakota in 1973, and the fourth such report in North America.

Linking growth performance and carcass traits with enterotypes in Muscovy ducks.

OBJECTIVE: Enterotypes (ETs) are the clustering of gut microbial community structures, which could serve as indicators of growth performance and carcass traits. However, ETs have been sparsely investigated in waterfowl. The objective of this study was to identify the ileal ETs and explore the correlation of the ETs with growth performance and carcass traits in Muscovy ducks. METHODS: A total of 200 Muscovy ducks were randomly selected from a population of 5,000 ducks at 70-day old, weighed and slaughtered. The growth performance and carcass traits, including body weight, dressed weight and ev…

Anti-inflammatory activity of diindolylmethane alleviates Riemerella anatipestifer infection in ducks.

3,3'-Diindolylmethane (DIM) is found in cruciferous vegetables and is used to treat various inflammatory diseases because of its potential anti-inflammatory effects. To investigate effects of DIM in Riemerella anatipestifer-infected ducks which induce upregulation of inflammatory cytokines, ducks were treated orally with DIM at dose of 200 mg/kg/day and infected the following day with R. anatipestifer. Infected and DIM-treated ducks exhibited 14% increased survival rate and significantly decreased bacterial burden compared to infected untreated ducks. Next, the effect on the expression level o…

Free fatty acids responsible for characteristic aroma in various sauced-ducks.

To investigate the effects of various duck sources on the lipid oxidation and aroma flavor of sauced-ducks, Mallard (ML), Sheldrake (SD), Muscovy (MC), and Cherry-Valley (CV) ducks were used in sauced-duck processing. The results showed significantly different thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) values of the four samples (SD > CV > ML > MC, p < 0.05), while the contents of unsaturated fatty acids (UFAs) were ML > SD/CV > MC (p < 0.05). Altogether, 105 volatile flavor compounds were detected in sauced-ducks, including acids, alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, esters, hydrocarbons, furan…

The truncated E protein of DTMUV provide protection in young ducks.

Duck Tembusu virus (DTMUV) is a major pathogen of duck industry in China. In the current study, we generated different constructs containing envelope (E) protein, pre-membrane-envelope (prM-E) protein, and C-terminally truncated E protein of the DTMUV. The constructed proteins could induce specific antibody responses in young ducks. When ducklings were immunized with the constructed proteins, they were 100% protected against DTMUV infection. Furthermore, the fluorescent signal of the truncated E protein was stronger than other constructed proteins, when Bac-to-Bac baculovirus expression system…
