The analysis performed covered 78 children with food polyallergy, with diagnosed gastritis and/or duodenitis. 22 patients were also diagnosed to have Giardia Lamblia infection, 9-Heliobacter pylori infection and in the remainder, food was considered to be a possible factor.

In a retrospective study of 320 gastroduodenoscopies performed on children in the last 2 years, 32 cases of duodenal damage, either isolated or associated with esophagitis, gastritis, or both, were selected. Twenty matched children with dyspeptic symptoms but an endoscopically normal duodenum were chosen as controls. Counts of lamina propria and intraepithelial cells, lymphoid and polymorphonuclear, have been performed on semithin sections of endoscopic biopsies from the duodenum of patients with ulcer-associated duodenitis, with non-specific duodenitis, and from controls. Mucosal cell proliferation in the first part of the duodenum was studied in 24 patients using a tissue culture technique in which endoscopic biopsies were subjected to autoradiography after exposure to tritiated thymidine. Eight patients had a normal duodenum, eight had duodenal ulcer, and eight had symptomatic chronic non-specific duodenitis. The mean crypt labelling index (LI) in normal duodenum was 8.8 0.4% (SEM). This study attempts to compare the endoscopic features of duodenitis with the histological characteristics. During a 12 month period, 98 patients undergoing fibreoptic oesophago-gastro-duodenoscopy had the endoscopic appearances of the duodenum classified on a three point scale of increasing severity of duodenitis. Difficulty in excluding duodenal ulceration by standard radiology has hampered investigation of duodenitis; endoscopy and biopsy add a new dimension.
