Unusual cause of dysuria: migration of a pacemaker generator into the urinary bladder.

Following pacemaker implantation, a 71-year-old female developed infection of the generator pocket. Five years after relocation posterior to the rectus muscle she suffered from cystitis. Cystoscopy revealed the pacemaker generator to be lying within the urinary bladder. Healing was achieved by removing the pacemaker and reutilizing it, after sterilization, in a new pectoral pocket.

Clinical judgment in the diagnosis and management of frequency and dysuria in general practice.

In a study of 40 women with the urethral syndrome and 46 women with conventional urinary tract infection, none of whom was pregnant, general practitioners predicted the diagnosis correctly before the report on the midstream urine specimen was received, as evidenced by their management. They seemed to do this by balancing the symptom of dysuria with the psychological make up of the patient: patients with the urethral syndrome suffered appreciably less dysuria than patients with urinary tract infection; patients with the urethral syndrome suffered appreciably more psychological illness. This abi…

Lacuna magna: a hidden cause of dysuria and bloody spotting in boys.

Intermittent hematuria, dysuria, or bloody spotting of underwear are symptoms occasionally seen in young boys. The lacuna magna (valve of Guerin) is a common embryologic remnant often found to be the cause of these symptoms. While retrograde urethrography may occasionally be helpful, voiding films that include the distal penile urethra usually establish the diagnosis. Transmeatal excision or incision of the valve-like leaflet is curative, but often the problem is benign and self-limiting even without treatment.

A cost-minimization analysis of treatment options for postmenopausal women with dysuria.

BACKGROUND: Empiric therapy for urinary tract infection is difficult in postmenopausal women because of the higher rates of confounding lower urinary tract symptoms and differential resistance profiles of uropathogens in this population. OBJECTIVE: The objective of the study was to determine the least costly strategy for treatment of postmenopausal women with the primary complaint of dysuria. STUDY DESIGN: We performed a cost minimization analysis modeling the following clinical options: (1) empiric antibiotic therapy followed by urine culture, (2) urinalysis with empiric antibiotic therapy …

Dysuria caused by a partially obstructing urethral membrane in a female dog.

CASE DESCRIPTION: A 3.5-year-old spayed female Labrador Retriever was examined for dysuria of unknown duration. CLINICAL FINDINGS: Urogenital examination revealed a recessed vulva and a persistent hymen. The hymen was broken down digitally. Results of urinalysis at the referral examination were unremarkable, and no clinically relevant abnormalities were detected on clinicopathologic analysis of blood and serum samples or cytologic evaluation of a vaginal smear. After clinical signs persisted, retrograde contrast vaginourethrocystography was performed; results were considered normal. During ur…

Twenty years of dysuria in a patient with Addison's disease: a case report.

X-linked adrenoleukodystrophy is an X-linked recessive disorder affecting approximately 1 in 21,000 males, and is estimated to be the cause of adrenal insufficiency in approximately 35% of patients with idiopathic Addison's disease. The disease is caused by defective beta-oxidation of fatty acids in peroxisomes that leads to elevated serum concentrations of very-long-chain saturated fatty acids. The accumulation causes a primary adrenal insufficiency and progressive neurological dysfunction. This article presents a case of X-linked adrenoleukodystrophy in its milder form, adrenomyeloneuropathy

[A case of retention cyst in the prostate complicated of dysuria: a case report].

A 42-year-old man presented with the chief complaint of dysuria which occurred suddenly. He showed a large quantity of post-voiding residue. Abdominal ultrasonography and cystoscope revealed a hypo-echoic mass with a diameter of 15 mm at the bladder neck. Transurethral resection of the cyst was performed, and dysuria was markedly improved. Pathological examination showed a retention cyst of the prostate.

Dysuria at onset of interstitial cystitis/painful bladder syndrome in women.

OBJECTIVES: In an ongoing national study of women to identify risk factors for interstitial cystitis/painful bladder syndrome (IC/PBS), dysuria was identified at the onset of IC/PBS in a small majority and the evidence for urinary tract infection was evaluated. METHODS: In women with IC/PBS of 12 months' duration or less, symptoms and pertinent laboratory tests at onset were assessed by telephone interview and medical record review. RESULTS: Of 138 women, 75 (54%) reported that they had started to experience burning or pain on urination at the onset of IC/PBS. Of those with urine cultures, 1…

Dysuria resulting from an encapsulated haematoma in a recently spayed bitch.

A 15-month-old bitch was presented for investigation of a two-month history of dysuria. Clinical signs had developed within one day of routine ovariohysterectomy. A rounded mass was palpable in the caudal abdomen which was shown radiographically to displace and compress the urinary bladder. On ultrasonography, the mass was composed primarily of pockets of hypoechoic fluid divided by hyperechoic septae; blood was obtained on fine-needle aspiration. The mass was surgically removed and the dog regained normal urinary function within a few days. Histopathological examination showed the mass to be …

[A bulky mass non-Hodgkin's lymphoma with dysuria in the rectovesical space].

A case of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma is reported. A 71-year-old man presented with complaint of dysuria and urinary frequency. Rectal examination and CT scan revealed a bulky mass in the rectovesical space. Transperineal needle biopsy of the tumor revealed non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, large cell type, diffuse. The patient received combination chemotherapy of adriamycin, cyclophosphamide, vincristine, prednisolone and pepleomycin. After two days the tumor was marvelously reduced in size, and partial response (PR) by CT was achieved after two months. PR was sustained for two months with cyclophosphamide,…
