BACKGROUND: Childhood overweight and obesity are associated with preventable diseases later in life. Reducing overweight and obesity in children could significantly reduce costs to the U.S. health care system. In a review of data from the University of Maryland School of Nursing, body mass index screening indicated that 14.6% of children in a mid-Atlantic Early Head Start (EHS) program were overweight or obese. Head Start and EHS programs provide educational services to children from racial and ethnic minority groups and/or low-income families.
PURPOSE: This quality improvement project aimed

BACKGROUND: Evidence regarding early interventions based on the Naturalistic Developmental Behavioral Interventions framework, such as the Early Start Denver Model (ESDM), suggests efficacy for autistic children. However, the effectiveness of ESDM across diverse cultural contexts remains under-researched.
OBJECTIVE: To assess the effectiveness of ESDM compared with treatment as usual (TAU) on overall development in young children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD).
METHOD: This parallel, randomised controlled trial, using a modified Zelen design, was conducted in five Child and Adolescent M

The successful implementation of early interventions (EIs) within families is crucial in mitigating language and developmental delays in young children. Considering that language acquisition primarily occurs through interactions between caregivers and children, parental involvement plays a significant role in EI services. Working within families where one parent interferes with the involvement of the child's other parent or caregiver can be challenging for service providers. This article examines parental gatekeeping-a concept from the family science literature that can have a significant impa

AIMS: Children with neuromotor delays are at risk for reaching and object exploration impairments, which may negatively affect their cognitive development and daily activity performance. This study evaluated the effectiveness of the Sitting Together And Reaching To Play (START-Play) intervention on reaching-related exploratory behaviors in children with neuromotor delays.
METHODS: In this randomized controlled clinical trial, 112 children (Mean = 10.80, SD = 2.59 months old at baseline) with motor delays were randomly assigned to receive START-Play intervention or usual care-early interventio

BACKGROUND: Parent-mediated intervention for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a critical component to deliver evidence-based interventions in resource-limited settings. There is a need for methodologically rigorous longitudinal and follow-up studies of children with ASD to understand clinical outcome and developmental trajectories.
METHODS: We report the clinical outcome at 18-month follow-up of children diagnosed with ASD who received parent-mediated intervention for a 3-month period as part of a feasibility study. The study participants were followed up for 18 months as part

BACKGROUND: Preterm infants have a higher risk of development disorders. Prematurity can be considered a source of stress, in both children and their parents, due to the high number of interventions that they require. Early intervention (EI) programmes have shown to have a positive influence on the neurodevelopment of children with neurological risk. On the other hand, parenting stress has a negative influence on the development of any child. This systematic review aimed to identify the effect of EI programmes on decreasing parenting stress suffered by parents of preterm babies.

This study examined the role of fidelity in the reading outcomes within a Tier 2 intervention implemented by Spanish kindergarten and first grade school teachers. For this purpose, differences in reading performance growth were analyzed among at-risk students who received a Tier 2 intervention with high fidelity, at-risk students who received the same intervention with medium fidelity, and an at-risk control group that did not receive a Tier 2 intervention. Implementation fidelity was analyzed using direct observations and self-reports. All students were assessed three times during the academi

INTRODUCTION: Following a cardiac event it is recommended that cardiac patients participate in cardiac rehabilitation (CR) programs. However, little is known about the relative cost-effectiveness of lifestyle-related interventions for cardiac patients. This study aimed to compare the cost-effectiveness of a telephone-delivered Healthy Weight intervention to a telephone-delivered Physical Activity intervention for patients referred to CR in urban and rural Australia.
METHODS: A cost-utility analysis was conducted alongside a randomised controlled trial of the two interventions. Outcomes were m

Against a backdrop of research on individual differences in reading disorders, this review considers a range of effective interventions to promote reading and language skills evaluated by our group. The review begins by contrasting the reading profiles seen in dyslexia and reading comprehension impairment and then argues that different interventions will be required. It is well established that effective interventions for decoding deficits (dyslexia) involve work on letter-sound knowledge, phonological awareness and reading practice to reinforce emergent skills. In contrast, effective interven

In a randomized controlled trial, 205 students were followed from grades 1 to 3 with a focus on changes in their writing trajectories following an evidence-based intervention during the spring of second grade. Students were identified as being at-risk (n=138), and then randomized into treatment (n=68) versus business-as-usual conditions (n=70). A typical group also was included (n=67). The writing intervention comprised Lesson Sets 4 and 7 from the Process Assessment of the Learner (PAL), and was conducted via small groups (three to six students) twice a week for 12 weeks in accordance with a

With the reauthorization of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act in 2004, Response to Intervention (RTI) was officially introduced. Unlike the discrepancy model, which determines eligibility in special education with a discrepancy between achievement and ability, RTI was designed to provide intensive instruction to students in the general classroom as soon as difficulties in acquiring requisite reading skills are detected. The proposed goals of RTI include the improvement of reading achievement and the identification of students with learning disabilities (LD). Although RTI holds pr

The detection of specific factors of the developmental dyslexia at an early stage, and the identification of the role of those factors responsible for its manifestation, is a fundamental area of study on dyslexia in the recent literature. The objective of the present study is to clarify that dysfunctions in the following specific domains contribute in a causal model to the occurrence of dyslexia at an early stage: phonological awareness, psychomotor ability (body shape, spatio-temporal orientation, grapho-motor ability and laterality), perception, memory, attention, prereading and prewriting s

Adolescent nutritional behaviors are assuming considerable importance in nutrition interventions given their important relationships with medium- and long-term outcomes. This is the period when young people undergo major anatomical and physiological maturational changes in preparation for adulthood. Nutritional requirements during puberty are higher during adolescence than during the prepubertal stage and during adulthood. A significant proportion of adolescents also become parents, and hence the importance of their health and nutritional status before as well as during pregnancy has its impac

Fundamental movement skills (FMS) and behavioral self-regulation (SR) are important for lifelong physical activity (PA). While physical literacy (PL) mediates child PA, its broader developmental impact in early childhood education (ECE) remains underexplored. The Active Start feasibility study examined a 10-week PL-based intervention's effects on FMS (stationary, locomotion, object control), total motor competency and behavioral SR, as well as sex-based differences, among 3-5-year-olds in Somerville, Massachusetts childcare centers. Children (mean age = 3.8 years, 55% boys) were randomized by

Early detection of reading acquisition failure is crucial since intervention is most effective if started early. This presentation gives a cross-linguistic overview of studies, conducted at our department, making use of GraphoLearn (GL), a serious gaming environment, in three languages with relatively transparent orthographies. Aim of the studies is to evaluate the effectiveness as well as screening value of playing GL. GraphoLearn was used to develop early reading acquisition games in three languages: Spanish, Standard Indonesian (both highly transparent orthographies) and Dutch (intermediate

INTRODUCTION: Developmental Delay (DD) is highly common in American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN; Indigenous) toddlers and leads to high numbers of AI/AN children who eventually need special education services. AI/AN children are 2.89 times more likely to receive special education compared to other children in the U.S., yet developmental disorders are more frequently under diagnosed and untreated in AI/AN infants and toddlers. DD, which can be identified as early as toddlerhood, can lead to negative impacts on developmental trajectories, school readiness, and long-term health. Signs of DD c

BACKGROUND: First Episode Rapid Early Intervention for Eating Disorders (FREED) is a service model and care pathway for emerging adults aged 16 to 25-years with a recent onset eating disorder (ED) of <3 years. A previous single-site study suggests that FREED significantly improves clinical outcomes compared to treatment-as-usual (TAU). The present study (FREED-Up) assessed the scalability of FREED. A multi-centre quasi-experimental pre-post design was used, comparing patient outcomes before and after implementation of FREED in participating services.
METHODS: FREED patients (n = 278) were con

PURPOSE: To compare two experimental Westmead Program treatments with a control Lidcombe Program treatment for early stuttering.
METHOD: The design was a three-arm randomized controlled trial with blinded outcome assessments 9 months post-randomization. Participants were 91 pre-school children.
RESULTS: There was no evidence of difference in percentage syllables stuttered at 9 months among groups. Dropout rates were substantive and may have been connected with novel aspects of the trial design: the use of community clinicians, no exclusion criteria, and randomization of children younger than

Group size and treatment intensity are understudied topics in mathematics intervention research. This study examined whether the treatment intensity and overall intervention effects of an empirically validated Tier 2 mathematics intervention varied between intervention groups with 2:1 and 5:1 student-teacher ratios. Student practice opportunities and the quality of explicit instruction served as treatment intensity metrics. A total of 465 kindergarten students with mathematics difficulties from 136 intervention groups participated. Results suggested comparable performances between the 2:1 and
