Socio-economic risk factors for intestinal helminthiases in selected endemic communities in Mindanao, the Philippines: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Parasitic neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) or 'infectious diseases of poverty' continue to affect the poorest communities in the world, including in the Philippines. Socio-economic conditions contribute to persisting endemicity of these infectious diseases. As such, examining these underlying factors may help identify gaps in implementation of control programs. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted helminthiasis (STH) and investigate the role of socio-economic and risk factors in the persistence of these diseases in endemic communiti

Social and Economic Factors Associated With Subthreshold and Major Depressive Episode in University Students During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Depression is one of the most frequent mental health disorders in college students and variations according to social and economic factors have been reported, however, whether social and economic variations also exist in subthreshold depression is still unknown, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. The aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence of subthreshold depressive episode (SDE) and major depressive episode (MDE) and to examine the association between social and economic factors with SDE and MDE in undergraduate students during the COVID-19 pandemic. The participants were 1,577…

Risk factors associated with scabies infestation among primary schoolchildren in a low socio-economic area in southeast of Iran.

BACKGROUND: Scabies is a neglected tropical disease caused by the mite Sarcoptes scabiei that burrows under the skin. It is a major health problem in tropical areas, largely affecting children. Scabies is common and highly contagious and in schoolchildren spreads quite rapidly, due to overcrowding and close contact within the schools. This study aimed to determine the risk factors associated with scabies infestation among primary schoolchildren in Bashagard County, one of the low socio-economic areas in southeast of Iran. METHODS: To conduct this community-based, descriptive, and cross-sectio

Influence of socio-economic status on Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) infection incidence, risk factors and clinical features.

Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) infection can cause serious illness including haemolytic uraemic syndrome. The role of socio-economic status (SES) in differential clinical presentation and exposure to potential risk factors amongst STEC cases has not previously been reported in England. We conducted an observational study using a dataset of all STEC cases identified in England, 2010-2015. Odds ratios for clinical characteristics of cases and foodborne, waterborne and environmental risk factors were estimated using logistic regression, stratified by SES, adjusting for baseline dem

Ischaemic manifestations in giant cell arteritis are associated with area level socio-economic deprivation, but not cardiovascular risk factors.

OBJECTIVES: To determine whether ischaemic manifestations of GCA are associated with pre-existing hypertension, atherosclerosis or area-level socio-economic deprivation. METHODS: We conducted an observational study of rheumatologist/ophthalmologist-diagnosed GCA in eight UK centres. The main outcome measure was ischaemic manifestations observed during active GCA: visual loss/blurring, aura, diplopia, jaw/tongue/limb claudication, cerebral/myocardial ischaemia or scalp necrosis. RESULTS: Out of 271 patients, 222 had ischaemic manifestations. Adjusted odds ratios (ORs) for the influence of hyp

Socio-economic indicators, housing characteristics, site of residence, and substance use as household-level risk factors in GRT-INSPIRED communities.

INTRODUCTION: Substance use remains a major public health concern in South Africa and disproportionately affects urban communities experiencing socio-economic disadvantage, poor housing conditions, and spatial inequality. While existing research has largely focused on individual-level substance use, less is known about how household socio-economic characteristics, housing conditions, and place of residence shape household-level substance use in urban settings. This study examined the associations between socio-economic indicators, housing characteristics, site of residence, and household subst

Measles, mumps, and rubella vaccination coverage: an ecological study of primary health care and socio-economic factors in Catalonia, Spain.

This study examined the association of socio-economic factors and the structure of primary care centres (PCCs) with measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccination coverage among the 8-year-old population in Catalonia, Spain. We conducted an ecological study to retrospectively assess the MMR vaccination-recorded status of children born in 2012, using public health data extracted in December 2020. For each of 300 PCCs serving 70,498 children, we calculated vaccination coverage rates from electronic health records and linked these rates to a composite deprivation index corresponding to the territo…

Socio-economic distribution of modifiable risk factors for cardiovascular diseases: An analysis of the national longitudinal ageing study in India.

The association of socioeconomic status (SES) with modifiable risk factors for cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) is unclear in developing nations. We studied SES variations in major risk factors and their percentage distribution for adults aged 45 years or above in India. Using individual records of 59,672 individuals aged 45 years or above from the Longitudinal Ageing Study in India Wave 1 (cross-sectional study design), 2017-18, we chart age-and-sex-adjusted prevalence of clinical risk factors such as measured high blood pressure, hypertension, overweight, obesity, central adiposity and self-re

Trade-offs between environmental and economic factors in conversion from exotic pine production to natural regeneration on erosion prone land.

BACKGROUND: Some of New Zealand's exotic pine (Pinus radiata D.Don) forests were planted for erosion mitigation but cultural, legislative, environmental, and profitability limitations in some parts of the landscape have led to reassessment of their suitability. There is limited information to support landowner decisions on the viability of natural regeneration of native forest post-pine-harvest. METHODS: We evaluated scenarios of post-harvest natural regeneration, compared to remaining in pine production, using erosion susceptibility determined from historical occurrence of landslides, gullie
