The mechanisms that determine bacterial shape are in many ways poorly understood. A prime example is the Lyme disease spirochete, Borrelia burgdorferi (B. burgdorferi), which mechanically couples its motility organelles, helical flagella, to its rod-shaped cell body, producing a striking flat-wave morphology. A mathematical model is developed here that accounts for the elastic coupling of the flagella to the cell cylinder and shows that the flat-wave morphology is in fact a natural consequence of the geometrical and material properties of the components. We report a case of an elastic cord-related ocular injury, to increase the public's awareness of the seriousness of this type of injury. A 43-year-old Chinese postman presented with decreased visual acuity in the left eye after being hit by an elastic cord at work. Slit lamp examination revealed pupillary sphincter rupture with iridodonesis and phacodonesis. There was also a traumatic nuclear cataract, gross hyphaema and vitreous haemorrhage. PURPOSE: To evaluate the incidence and severity of ocular injuries caused by elastic cords.
PATIENTS AND METHOD: A retrospective review of patients' records from the Emergency Department was conducted to identify cases of elastic cord-induced ocular injuries. Over a 67-month period starting in October 1996, 28 patients (24 males and 4 females, mean age 38.6 years) with elastic cord-associated ocular trauma were identified. Patient demographics, mechanism of injury, presenting and final visual acuity, ocular injuries, medical and surgical intervention and length of follow-up were noted.

This article discusses a thesis regarding the pathophysiology of constrictive pericarditis. Cerebrovascular insufficiency in infancy and childhood is well documented and has a diverse and often unknown etiology. PURPOSE: To investigate the proteolytic effect on Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty (DMEK) graft elasticity.
METHODS: The ex-vivo experimental study included 19 DMEK-grafts treated with elastase, hyaluronidase, collagenase-IV, or collagenase-VIII at varying concentrations and temperatures.
