Peripheral nerve injuries (PNIs) are a common consequence of trauma, often affecting the upper extremity. These injuries can cause debilitating sensory and motor disturbances and are frequently treated by orthopedic hand and plastic surgeons. When the connective tissue surrounding the nerve fibers is maintained, PNIs may spontaneously heal without intervention. However, in more significant injuries in which endoneurial tissue is disrupted, surgical treatment may be more appropriate. Due to the complex regenerative process and concurrent limitations of peripheral nerve healing, sensory and moto

Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a central nervous system (CNS) disease with a high disability rate, and reconstructing motor function after SCI remains a global challenge. Recent advancements in rehabilitation and regenerative medicine offer new approaches to SCI repair. Electrical stimulation has been shown to alter cell membrane charge distribution, generating action potentials, and affecting cell behavior. This method aids axon regeneration and neurotrophic factor upregulation, crucial for nerve repair. Biomaterials, used as scaffolds or coatings in cell culture and tissue engineering, enhance

Electrical injuries can occur in pregnant women but currently their incidence is not completely known. Notwithstanding, those represent clinical important events such maternal and fetal death, which can be avoided if properly managed. The objective of this paper is to describe the results of electrical injury (high and low voltage), in pregnant women in scientific reports. A systematic search was performed with keywords "electrical injuries", "lightning injuries", "lightning strike", "pregnant women" and "pregnancy", using the databases: MedLine, Scielo, Lilacs, Clinical key, Web of Science, S

Spinal cord injury (SCI) population with injury below T10 or injury to the cauda equina region is characterized by denervated muscles, extensive muscle atrophy, infiltration of intramuscular fat and formation of fibrous tissue. These morphological changes may put individuals with SCI at higher risk for developing other diseases such as various cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, obesity and osteoporosis. Currently, there is no available rehabilitation intervention to rescue the muscles or restore muscle size in SCI individuals with lower motor neuron denervation. We, hereby, performed a review

INTRODUCTION: Neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) over a muscle belly (mNMES) recruits superficial motor units (MUs) preferentially, whereas NMES over a nerve trunk (nNMES) recruits MUs evenly throughout the muscle. We performed tests to determine whether "interleaving" pulses between the mNMES and nNMES sites (iNMES) reduces the fatigability of contractions for people experiencing paralysis because of chronic spinal cord injury.
METHODS: Plantar flexion torque and soleus electromyography (M-waves) were recorded from 8 participants. A fatigue protocol (75 contractions; 2 s on/2 s off

Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a complex and devastating condition characterized by disruption of descending, ascending, and intrinsic spinal circuitry resulting in chronic neurologic deficits. In addition to limb and trunk sensorimotor deficits, SCI can impair autonomic neurocircuitry such as the motor networks that support respiration and cough. High cervical SCI can cause complete respiratory paralysis, and even lower cervical or thoracic lesions commonly result in partial respiratory impairment. Although electrophrenic respiration can restore ventilator-independent breathing in select candida

BACKGROUND: Electrical burn is less prevalent in comparison to other forms of burn injuries, however this type of injury is considered as one of the most devastating due to high morbidity and mortality. Understanding the epidemiologic pattern of electrical burns helps determine the contributing factors leading to this type of injury.
OBJECTIVES: Epidemiologic studies on electrical burn are scarce in Iran. This study was conducted to evaluate electrical burn injury at our center.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Demographic data, etiology, burn percentage and other measures related to electrical burn i

Deaths due to electric shock are increasing despite stringent laws and preventive measures. These shocks are a leading cause of death amongst construction workers. In about 20% of the cases, no visible injury due to electricity can be seen. In some cases, non-electrical injuries are present and at times there are no eyewitnesses to provide a detailed account of events. In such circumstances, examination of scene of death, autopsy and accident reconstruction with the help of an electrical expert are all necessary to determine the cause of death. Here, we report one such case where a mason worki

A 45-year-old man with no significant medical history presented following an electric current injury (380 V). He developed multiple systemic injuries including third degree burns and after 1 week of hospitalisation he reported unilateral visual changes. Examination suggested the presence of optic nerve oedema without evidence of haemorrhage, exudate or vessel abnormality. This was considered to be related to the electric shock. A trial of corticosteroids was considered. He was followed up to 5 months in clinic and was noted to have developed unilateral optic atrophy and no other systemic manif

Two centuries ago, electricity was being used for the treatment of paraplegia and trials were taking place in France. This study aims to identify cases of traumatic paraplegia treated with electricity in the 19th century in order to assess the therapeutic benefit. Only four such cases were identified, none with a complete transection of the spinal cord since these patients would have died from pressure sores and urinary tract infections. The personalities involved, William Gull, William Erb, Guillaume Duchenne and Cyril Henry Golding Bird are portrayed and contemporaneous views on electrothera

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to evaluate the functional changes of the arterial endothelium and smooth muscle after a high-voltage electrical injury (HVEI), using flow-mediated dilation (FMD) and nitrate-mediated dilation (NMD).
METHODS: Twenty-five male patients injured in the upper extremities by current due to contact with more than 20,000 volts were enrolled in the study. FMD and NMD were measured on the brachial artery within 48 hours after HVEI, and follow-up FMD and NMD were evaluated six weeks later. In addition, we enrolled an age, sex and body mass index matched healthy c

BACKGROUND: Burn injuries are a common presentation in Nigerian hospitals and result from a variety of causes. Recently, many have resulted from Petroleum related fire incidents. High voltage electrical injuries are relatively rare; lightning strikes even rarer. In traditional societies where Traditional medicine practitioners are usually the first to be contacted and where late presentation to hospitals is the rule, complications such as the wet gangrene necessitating amputation are common. Even when patients present relatively early and are resuscitated and treated, complete prosthetic rehab

Ultrasound (US) and electrical stimulation have been widely used in hand therapy to promote recovery after nerve and tendon injuries. There is support for the use of low-dosage continuous wave and pulsed US for carpal tunnel syndrome and tendonitis. Iontophoresis with dexamethasone sodium phosphate can relieve pain in acute elbow tendonitis, but there is no support for phonophoresis for any tendonitis. Animal model research supports the use of low-dosage US to improve the mechanical properties of the Achilles tendon when initiated immediately after tenorrhaphy. There are no studies available w

INTRODUCTION: Penetrating head injuries are rare especially in the paediatric age group. Relatively minor falls over common household objects can cause potentially life-threatening brain injuries.
CASE REPORT: We describe a penetrating head injury caused by a household electrical plug in a 6-month-old child. The two rounded pins of the plug were embedded in the posterior parietal area of her head, very close to the cranial midline. There was no neurological deterioration or bleeding. Radiological investigation showed a depressed skull fracture underneath the two pins. One of them came very cl

Transient or permanent diabetes insipidus (DI) due to damage in vasopressinergic neurons--which may be hereditary or caused by head injury, brain surgery, tumors, granulomatous disorders, infections, vascular disorders, autoimmunity, and idiopathic causes--is not rare. Hypothalamic hypothyroidism is due to decreased thyrotropin-releasing hormone secretion and is seen rarely. We report a case of transient hypothalamic hypothyroidism and transient DI due to electrical injury.

The purpose of this collective review is to examine the use of functional electrical stimulation for incontinence. The Finetech-Brindley bladder system enhances voiding through stimulation via electrodes implanted around the ventral sacral roots. Detrusor hyperreflexia is eliminated through complete dorsal rhizotomy, which results in loss of reflex defecation and reflex erection/reflex lubrication. Consequently, a new system is being devised in which functional electrical stimulation for incontinence in spinal cord injury can be achieved without dorsal rhizotomy.

Patients surviving high-voltage electrical injury may have early and delayed sequelae. The most apparent neurological complications are known to be cerebral injury, spinal cord lesions, peripheral-nerve injuries and motor neuropathies. In this study, clonus, which is an unusual late neurological sequela in an electrical burn patient and presented as series of rhythmic, monophasic contractions and relaxations of a group of muscles, is presented. Possible mechanisms of this unusual late sequela and the clinical outcome of the patient are discussed. Ankle and patellar clonus was observed in 4 pat
