LONG-TERM ELECTROMAGNETIC FIELD MEASUREMENT AND ASSESSMENT FOR A SHOPPING MALL.

As a result of the dense deployment of wireless devices and base stations, measuring and evaluating the electromagnetic (EM) exposure levels they emit have become important to human health especially if they exceed the limits defined in the standards. Base stations, Wi-Fi equipment and other electronic devices are used heavily, especially in densely crowded places like shopping centers. In this study, electric field strength (E) measurements were conducted at one of the largest shopping malls in Turkey. Broadband E measurements were performed using PMM 8053 EM field strength meter for 24 h a d

Suspension osteopenia in mice: whole body electromagnetic field effects.

Whole-body fields were tested for their efficacy in preventing the osteopenia caused by tail suspension in mice. The fields had fundamental frequencies corresponding to the upper range of predicted endogenous impact-generated frequencies (0.25-2.0 kHz) in the long bones. Three distinct whole-body EMFs were applied for 2 weeks on growing mice. Structural, geometric, and material properties of the femora, tibiae, and humeri of suspended mice were altered compared to controls. Comparison of suspended mice and mice subjected to caloric restriction indicates that the changes in caloric intake do no

Treatment of nonunited scaphoid fractures by pulsed electromagnetic field and cast.

Thirty-five of 44 nonunited scaphoid fractures that were at least 6 months old healed in a mean time of 4.3 months during pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) treatment using external coils and a thumb spica cast. The mean time from the onset of the fracture to treatment was 40 months. No concurrent operation was performed. Follow-up time averaged 8.4 months. Eight of nine fractures with avascular necrosis healed. Five of eight fractures in the proximal third healed. Twelve (75%) of 16 patients treated in short-arm thumb spica casts and PEMF healed versus 22 (92%) of 24 patients treated initial

Pulsing electromagnetic field treatment in ununited fractures and failed arthrodeses.

Pulsing electromagnetic fields (PEMFs) induce weak electric currents in bone by external coils on casts or skin. This surgically noninvasive, outpatient method, approved by the Food and Drug Administration in November 1979, produced confirmed end results in 1,007 ununited fractures and 71 failed arthrodeses, worldwide. Overall success at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center was 81%; internationally, 79%; and in other patients in the United States, 76%. Treatment with PEMFs was effective in 75% of 332 patients (a subset) with an average 4.7-year disability duration, an average of 3.4 previous o…

Genotoxic effects of electromagnetic field radiations from mobile phones.

The use of wireless communication technology in mobile phones has revolutionized modern telecommunication and mobile phones have become so popular that their number exceeds the global population. Electromagnetic field radiations (EMR) are an integral part of wireless technology, which are emitted by mobile phones, mobile tower antennas, electric power stations, transmission lines, radars, microwave ovens, television sets, refrigerators, diagnostic, therapeutic, and other electronic devices. Manmade EMR sources have added to the existing burden of natural EMR human exposure arising from the Sun

The management of intractable pain with adjuvant pulsed electromagnetic field therapy.

This case describes a 51-year-old woman who reported experiencing severe, constant pain, diffusely located in the region of her right mandible neck (primarily involving the mandible, lower right molars, the neck, the upper back, and the shoulder) during the course of several years. Surgical interventions (root canal, spinal fusion) were performed to address potential sources of pain. Despite these interventions, the patient reported severe pain after both surgeries, which persisted beyond the acute postoperative period. Additional pharmacological interventions and physical therapy were also at

Circadian neuroendocrine physiology and electromagnetic field studies: precautions and complexities.

The suppression of melatonin by exposure to low frequency electromagnetic fields (EMFs) 'the melatonin hypothesis'. has been invoked as a possible mechanism through which exposure to these fields may result in an increased incidence of cancer. While the effect of light on melatonin is well established, data showing a similar effect due to EMF exposure are sparse and, where present, are often poorly controlled. The current review focuses on the complexities associated with using melatonin as a marker and the dynamic nature of normal melatonin regulation by the circadian neuroendocrine axis. The…

Combined Electromagnetic Fields Mitigate Unloading-Induced Bone Loss by Enhancing Osteogenic Responses via Multiphysics-Induced Mechanotransduction.

Unloading-induced bone loss is a major medical challenge during long-duration human spaceflight, largely driven by suppressed osteoblast-mediated bone formation, and practical countermeasures are needed. Electromagnetic stimulation has shown benefits for bone repair, and its non-invasiveness supports potential space use; however, its single-modality efficacy remains limited. Here, we investigated a combined electromagnetic field (CEMF) integrating a static magnetic field (SMF, 0.4-0.6 T) and a pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF, 0.38 ± 0.19 mT) to attenuate unloading-related bone loss and exam

Redox cell signalling triggered by black carbon and/or radiofrequency electromagnetic fields: Influence on cell death.

The capacity of environmental pollutants to generate oxidative stress is known to affect the development and progression of chronic diseases. This scientific review identifies previously published experimental studies using preclinical models of exposure to environmental stress agents, such as black carbon and/or RF-EMF, which produce cellular oxidative damage and can lead to different types of cell death. We summarize in vivo and in vitro studies, which are grouped according to the mechanisms and pathways of redox activation triggered by exposure to BC and/or EMF and leading to apoptosis, nec

Circadian Rhythm Modulates the Therapeutic Activity of Pulsed Electromagnetic Fields on Intervertebral Disc Degeneration in Rats.

Circadian rhythm (CR) imparts significant benefits in treating multiple diseases, such as heart diseases and arthritis. But the CR effect on intervertebral disc degeneration (IVDD) therapy remains unclear. Recent studies revealed that pulsed electromagnetic fields (PEMF) are capable of alleviating IVDD. In this study, we evaluated the CR-mediated regulation of PEMF therapeutic effect on IVDD induced by rat tail disc needle puncture. Our results demonstrated that the daytime PEMF stimulation (DPEMF) is more effective than the nighttime PEMF (NPEMF) in delaying IVDD. Moreover, the rats treated w…

Pulsed electromagnetic fields (PEMF) attenuate changes in vertebral bone mass, architecture and strength in ovariectomized mice.

Pulsed electromagnetic fields (PEMF) has been investigated as a noninvasive alternative method to prevent bone loss for postmenopausal osteoporosis (OP), and the bone tissue involved in these studies are usually long bones such as femur and tibia in OP patients or rat models. However, few studies have investigated the effects of PEMF on the vertebral bone in mice with OP. This study aimed to investigate whether PEMF preserve lumbar vertebral bone mass, microarchitecture and strength in ovariectomized (OVX) mouse model of OP and its associated mechanisms. Thirty 3-month-old female BALB/c mice w…

Occupational Electromagnetic Fields exposure in Magnetic Resonance Imaging systems - Preliminary results for the RF harmonic content.

PURPOSE: European legislation concerning the protection of workers from exposure to Electromagnetic Fields (EMF) was recently (26.6.2013) completed by Directive 2013/35/ΕU. This Directive is a specific one of the framework Directive 89/391/EEC and part of the overall legislation for Occupational Health and Safety (OHS). Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) systems have played a key role, both in the postponement of the former 2004/40 EMF Directive and in the formation of the latest limits adopted by the new Directive. On the other hand, MRI systems are associated with the exposure of personnel to …
