INTRODUCTION: Cysticercus tenuicollis, the metacestode stage of Taenia hydatigena has a worldwide distribution and is particularly common in rural areas and developing countries. In rare cases, T. hydatigena infection may result in the death of its host due to severe damage or secondary bacterial infections. Rats were intoxicated with LD50 of potassium cyanide and some nitriles. Content of glutathione in brain and liver tissues and activity of cytochrome oxidase in brain were studied. Activity of brain cytochrome oxidase was inhibited in rats intoxicated with cyanide, acrylonitrile and valeronitrile. All the nitriles studied reduced the tissue glutathione content. Cyanides did not exhibit any effects on glutathione concentration.

The spectrophotometric characteristics of hemes a and a3 in cytochrome oxidase have been examined over the range 380 nm to 900 nm. Difference spectra (relative to the oxidized form) are presented for ferrous, high-spin oxidized, low-spin oxidized, early "pulsed," late "pulsed," and two-peroxide-treated states of the enzyme. Comparisons indicate that the decay product of the initial peroxide complex of the enzyme is identical to a low-spin pulsed form of the enzyme. A high-spin pulsed form of the enzyme persists for several hours to days after preparation.

A detailed study is presented of the room-temperature absorption, natural and magnetic circulation-dichroism (c.d. and m.c.d.) spectra of cytochrome c oxidase and a number of its derivatives in the wavelength range 700-1900 nm. The spectra of the reduced enzyme show a strong negative c.d. band peaking at 1100nm arising from low-spin ferrous haem a and a positive m.c.d. peak at 780nm assigned to high-spin ferrous haem a3. Addition of cyanide ion doubles the intensity of the low-spin ferrous haem c.d. band and abolishes reduced carbonmonoxy derivative the haem a32+-CO group shows no c.d. or m.c.
