The Branching Pattern of the Brachiocephalic Trunk in the Donkey (Equus asinus).

Donkeys are a member of the horse family (Equidae) and share a common ancestor. However, in morphological terms, donkeys and horses are rega … BCT origin for better visualization of vessels. Four other donkeys were freshly studied without the embalming procedure. In all cases, the BCT was the only branch of the aortic arch and branched into the left subclavian (LSb) artery, the right costocervical trunk, the right subclavian (RSb) artery and the bicarotid trunk. The main branching pattern of the R …

Anatomical basis for ultrasound-guided regional anaesthesia at the junction of the axilla and the upper arm.

PURPOSE: Ultrasound (US) has emerged in the field of regional anaesthesia in the past few years, as it allows physicians to simultaneously see the needle, the targeted nerves, and the vessels to avoid. Nevertheless, anatomical knowledge is essential for identifying all of the structures seen on the US screen. US also allows an in vivo approach to the variations of nerves and vessels. The aim of this study was to describe the anatomical structures of the axilla through a dissection, an anatomical section and US images performed during daily regional anaesthesia. This work will also discuss the

CT of a Ptolemaic period mummy from the ancient Egyptian City of Akhmim.

Mummies associated with the ancient city of Akhmim in Egypt provide an important portal for radiologic research concerning the ancient Egyptian population. As part of an ongoing investigation, a mummy of Akhmimic derivation owned by the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, was scanned with a 16-detector row computed tomographic scanner. The resultant images helped confirm that the mummy was that of a female in her late teens. Although the deliberate omission of hieroglyphic texts on the painted coffin rendered the deceased individual anonymous, it is noteworthy that great

Sonography of plantar plates in cadavers: correlation with MRI and histology.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of our study was to describe the sonographic appearance of the lesser metatarsal plantar plates in cadavers and to correlate these findings with MRI and histology. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Six soft-embalmed cadaveric feet (74-92 years old; two male, one female) were imaged with sonography and MRI. Tear dimensions of the plantar plate were recorded in the long and short axes. Orthopedic surgeons directly inspected the plantar plates before removing samples for histologic correlation. One young fresh cadaver was imaged with sonography before histologic assessment. RESULTS:

Anatomy of the retroperitoneum: observations of the distribution of pathologic fluid collections.

PURPOSE: To correlate anatomic dissections with clinical observations regarding anatomic distribution of retroperitoneal fluid, and to document the existence of planes that lie between classically described retroperitoneal spaces. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Latex was injected in varying amounts into the pancreatic tail in three fresh cadavers to simulate peripancreatic fluid collections. Spiral computed tomography (CT) was performed of the abdomen and pelvis after each latex injection. Two cadavers were subsequently frozen and sectioned in axial planes; limited dissections were performed on these

Commentary on Charlier et al. article "Paleoproteomics reveals chromoblastomycosis as possible cause of King of France Louis XIV's death (1715)".

This article critically examines the recent hypothesis that Louis XIV died of chromoblastomycosis following the paleoproteomic detection of … oproteomic studies of ancient relics, including selective biomolecular preservation, contamination, embalming-related alterations, postmortem handling, and the uncertain differential survival of microbial signals over time. In such a context, fungal detection cannot be equated with causal demonstration. In conclusion, while the identification of Cyphellopho …

Pressure injection demonstrates points of weakness in the posterior nasal arteries.

OBJECTIVE: To test the hypothesis that potential sites of weakness within normal nasal arteries, when stressed, contribute to the mechanism of epistaxis, we 'stress-tested' nasal arteries in unfixed cadaveric heads, using pressure injection of feeding arteries. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Indian ink with latex was injected into maxillary arteries under high pressure (620 mmHg). Stepwise dissection was carried out and areas showing ink leakage were examined. Control heads were injected at standard embalming pressures (375 mmHg). RESULTS: Ink leakage was found in all heads injected at higher pressu…

The first known use of vermillion.

Vermillion has been shown to be useful in preserving human bones from 5000 years ago. Remarkably well-preserved human bones have been found … ecause its composition, red mercuric sulphide, is similar to that of preparations used in technical embalming. This finding pushes back the data of the use of mercury ore for preservation by four millennia in South America, and by at least one millennium in the Old World. Chemical and thermal analyses of vermillion in La Velilla have demonstrated its great …

The ETA-ESE statement on the European Chemicals Agency opinion on iodine as an endocrine disruptor.

In 2022, the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) made a statement concluding that iodine is an endocrine disruptor (ED). "We stress the fact that the ECHA opinion ECHA/BPC/357/2022 is based on their misguidedly zooming in on exclusively the biocidal products (e.g., hand disinfectants, disinfection of animals' teats/udder, embalming fluids before cremation, etc.) that contain molecular iodine (I2), entirely neglecting [see the 2013 ECHA Regulation (EU) n°528/2012 describing iodine as being of "great importance for human health". Clearly, the current sweeping and erroneous classification of "iodine…

Extracranial cored method of human en bloc temporal bone harvest.

PURPOSE: Surgical skills requires a combination of anatomical knowledge and manual skills. Human cadaveric temporal bones remain essential for surgical training; Temporal bone skills courses are often organized with a single, massed block of practice, using a decapitated head or temporal bones specimens from donated bodies. However, temporal bone harvesting can be difficult and time consuming and ethical considerations limit body segmentation The present study aimed to describe and evaluate a novel extracranial cored method (CM) for harvesting paired temporal bones. Our primary objective was t

Friar Leopold Mandic (1866-1942): the computed tomography of the body of a saint.

PURPOSE: In forensic clinical anatomy computed tomography (CT) is used in post-mortem radiological investigation as an objective nondestructive documentation of the body surface and of the interior of the body. This technique is applied also in paleopathology, in particular in mummy studies, with the aim of providing a permanent record of the mummy's features, investigating the embalming procedure employed and analyzing the extent of the preservation in detail. METHODS: For the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy, the mortal remains of Saint Leopold Mandic and Saint Pio da Pietralcina, as examples…

Retroesophageal aberrant right subclavian artery associated with a non-recurrent laryngeal nerve and absent right internal thoracic artery: a donor case report.

BACKGROUND: The aberrant right subclavian artery (ARSA) is the most common anomaly of the arch of aorta and is significantly associated with a non-recurrent laryngeal nerve (NRLN). Nevertheless, the co-occurrence of ARSA with complex thoracic wall vascular remodeling is scarcely described in the current literature. This exploration describes an unusual group of neurovascular variations with important surgical significance. CASE PRESENTATION: A precise dissection was performed on a 43-year-old female donor of Thai descent embalmed with soft-embalming technique with vascular silicone-color inje…

The anatomy of the male inferior hypogastric plexus: What should we know for nerve sparing surgery.

The aim of this study was to investigate the nerve supply to the structures in the male lesser pelvis and review its clinical relevance, especially during nerve sparing surgery. Three formalin-embalmed and 16 Thiel-embalmed male hemipelves were used. They were microdissected after repeated treatments with nitric acid diluted 1:10 with milliQ-water. The inferior hypogastric plexus (IHP) is a fan-like structure lateral from the rectum on the fascia of the levator ani. Nerves emerging from the proximal, solid part of the plexus follow the internal iliacal vessels and reach the prostate from dorso

Accessory levator muscle slips of the levator palpebrae superioris muscle.

BACKGROUND: Accessory levator muscle slips may be associated with congenital eyelid retraction or blepharoptosis. Nevertheless, congenital retraction of the upper eyelid is a poorly defined entity about which little is known. Because of the clinical importance of the accessory levator muscle slip of the levator palpebrae superioris muscle, this study aimed to describe the morphological appearance of this variation in human adult orbits. METHODS: This study was undertaken in 60 orbits of 30 embalmed adult human cadavers, 17 men and 13 women, between the ages of 38 and 87 years at death. All ca

Influence of retrocalcaneal bursal effusion on the mechanical behavior of the Achilles tendon insertion during ankle dorsiflexion: a cadaveric study.

BACKGROUND: Retrocalcaneal bursitis is often accompanied by insertional Achilles tendinopathy. However, the mechanical effects of bursal effusion remain unclear. This study aimed to elucidate the mechanical impact of retrocalcaneal bursal effusion using Thiel-embalmed cadavers, which are known to exhibit mechanical properties comparable to those in vivo. METHODS: Ten lower limbs from seven Thiel-embalmed cadavers were examined. Ultrasound-guided injection of the preservation fluid was performed to simulate retrocalcaneal bursal effusion. Ultrasonographic evaluation was conducted under three c

Anatomy of the prepuce of the clitoris: Introducing the collar of the clitoris, a novel anatomical subdivision of the clitoral prepuce.

The anatomy of the clitoral prepuce is surgically important, especially as female genital mutilation remains common and genital plastic, reconstructive, and aesthetic surgeries are performed with increasing frequency. Despite its surgical importance, basic anatomical study of the clitoral prepuce has been limited, and confusion exists regarding the fundamental gross anatomical structure of the prepuce. This study identifies novel anatomical structures of the clitoral prepuce including a distinct band of preputial tissue located around the neck of the clitoris, a structure which has not yet bee

Characterization of the layer, direction and time-dependent mechanical behaviour of the human oesophagus and the effects of formalin preservation.

The mechanical characterization of the oesophagus is essential for applications such as medical device design, surgical simulations and tissue engineering, as well as for investigating the organ's pathophysiology. However, the material response of the oesophagus has not been established ex vivo in regard to the more complex aspects of its mechanical behaviour using fresh, human tissue: as of yet, in the literature, only the hyperelastic response of the intact wall has been studied. Therefore, in this study, the layer-dependent, anisotropic, visco-hyperelastic behaviour of the human oesophagus
