OBJECTIVE: Individuals with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) have been found to exhibit emotional regulation difficulties. However, the specific neural mechanisms that underlie these difficulties remain understudied. This study aimed to use pupillometry as an index function of parasympathetic nervous system activation, to investigate the mechanisms underlying emotional regulation difficulties in individuals with PTSD.
METHOD: A total of 87 trauma-exposed mothers (34 with PTSD and 53 non-PTSD controls) completed an eye tracking assessment in which pupillary dilation in response to emotiona…

OBJECTIVE: Exposure therapy is an effective treatment for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), but many patients do not respond. Brain functions governing treatment outcome are not well characterized. The authors examined brain systems relevant to emotional reactivity and regulation, constructs that are thought to be central to PTSD and exposure therapy effects, to identify the functional traits of individuals most likely to benefit from treatment.
METHOD: Individuals with PTSD underwent functional MRI (fMRI) while completing three tasks assessing emotional reactivity and regulation. Partici

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: People prone to mania use emotion regulation (ER) strategies well when explicitly coached to do so in laboratory settings, but they find these strategies ineffective in daily life. We hypothesized that, compared with control participants, mania-prone people would show ER deficits when they received implicit, but not explicit, cues to use ER.
METHODS: Undergraduates (N = 66) completed the Hypomanic Personality Scale (HPS) and were randomly assigned to one of three experimental conditions: automatic ER (scrambled sentence primes), deliberate ER (verbal instructions),

Individuals with major depressive disorder (MDD) have difficulties regulating emotion on their own. As people also use social resources to regulate emotion (i.e., interpersonal emotion regulation [IER]), we examined whether these difficulties extend to IER in current and remitted MDD compared to those with no psychiatric disorders (i.e., controls). Adults with current MDD (n = 48), remitted MDD (n = 80), and controls (n = 87) assessed via diagnostic interviewing completed 2-week experience sampling, reporting on how frequently (IER frequency), from whom (sharing partners), and why (IER goals)

BACKGROUND: Emotional allodynia, a condition in which neutral or low-intensity interpersonal stimuli provoke disproportionate emotional distress, has been proposed as a clinically relevant feature of fibromyalgia. The Emotional Allodynia Questionnaire (AEQ) was recently preliminarily validated and showed a strong association with emotion dysregulation as measured by the Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale (DERS). However, which specific DERS facets underlie emotional allodynia, independently of depression, anxiety, pain catastrophizing and central sensitization, remains unknown.

INTRODUCTION: Emotion regulation is a significant area of psychological research that requires investigation of processes that are often difficult for participants to describe, involving implicit and automatic actions. However, research examining emotion regulatory processes often requires individuals to modify their emotional responses in the moment and to report on that strategy use. We aimed to determine if individuals are able to change the regulation of their emotions when implicit goals are made explicit.
METHOD: Undergraduates (n = 101) watched four fear-eliciting films. Between the se

OBJECTIVE: Emotion regulation (ER) and dysregulation (ED) have significant impacts on the mental health and quality of life of autistic individuals and their families, yet little is known about ER development in early childhood autism. This paper proposes a developmental model of disruptions to early ER development, emphasizing parent-child co-regulation, to guide future research and clinical care.
METHOD: Empirical research on ER, ED, and parent-child co-regulation in young autistic children (mean age <6 years) was summarized. Insights from theoretical and empirical work on typical ER develo

Self-regulated learning (SRL) is the degree to which students are metacognitively, motivationally, and behaviourally active participants in their own learning process. It involves the self-regulation of cognitive, behavioural, and affective processes. SRL holds significant potential for enhancing practise and achievement. Although affect is acknowledged as one of the three fundamental processes in SRL, there is limited research investigating it. However, emotions have been found to influence SRL efficiency while emotion regulation (ER) can impact learning outcomes. Thus, this study sought to i

Children of depressed mothers are at significantly high risk (HR) for developing major depressive disorder (MDD) compared to their low risk (LR) counterparts. Evidence shows that HR youth exhibit a reduced late positive potential (LPP), an electroencephalogram (EEG) marker of emotional reactivity, in response to social-emotional stimuli. However, it remains unknown how emotion regulation (ER) styles may impact LPP responses in HR and LR offspring. The current study sought to examine the interplay of ER strategies (i.e., rumination, cognitive reappraisal, and suppression) and maternal history o

Individuals hold a variety of beliefs about emotions, which can influence how they regulate specific emotions. Additionally, concerns about social evaluations can shape how people's beliefs about emotions are associated with the way they manage their feelings. In this study, we investigate the beliefs about undesirability of positive emotions and controllability of feeling good in relation to positive emotion regulation strategies (i.e., positive rumination vs. dampening). Within the scope of this study, the concepts of fear of happiness and discomfort with positive emotions were examined in r

BACKGROUND: Emotion dysregulation and internalizing symptoms are increasingly recognized as central features of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), yet substantial emotional heterogeneity exists among affected adolescents. This study aimed to identify distinct emotional profiles in adolescents with ADHD by integrating emotion regulation difficulties, resilience, and internalizing symptoms using a person-centered, data-driven approach.
METHODS: This multicenter, cross-sectional study included 109 clinically referred adolescents aged 11-18 years with a Diagnostic and Statistical Ma

Altered emotion dynamics and emotion regulation (ER) have been indicated in theoretical descriptions of abnormal emotional functioning, which contributes to the development and maintenance of anorexia nervosa (AN). Ecological momentary assessment (EMA) has recently become popular in research on eating disorders. It is a source of new insights into the psychopathology of AN as it enables intensive long-term tracking of everyday experiences and behaviours of individuals through repeated self-reports. The following systematic review aims to synthesize research on the use of EMA when evaluating em

Improving emotion regulation is central to borderline personality disorder (BPD) treatment, but little research indicates which emotion regulation strategies are optimally effective and when. Basic emotion science suggests that engagement emotion regulation strategies that process emotional content become less effective as emotional intensity increases, whereas disengagement strategies that disengage from it do not. This study examined whether emotional reactivity to emotional stimuli predicts the effectiveness of engagement and disengagement emotion regulation across self-report, general phys

In the present study, we examined the impact of emotion regulation on the intensity bias in guilt and shame. Fifty-two undergraduates either forecasted their emotions and emotion regulation following a guilt- and shame-eliciting situation or reported their actual experienced emotions and employed emotion regulation. Results showed a clear intensity bias, that is, forecasters predicted to experience more guilt and shame than experiencers actually experienced. Furthermore, results showed that forecasters predicted to employ less down-regulating emotion regulation (i.e. less acceptance) and more

BACKGROUND: Childhood sexual abuse (CSA) has the potential to compromise socio-emotional development of the survivor resulting in increased vulnerability to difficulties regulating emotions. In turn, emotion regulation is thought to play a key part in a number of psychological disorders which CSA survivors are at increased risk of developing. A better understanding of the basic emotions experienced in this population and emotion regulation strategies will inform current treatment.
OBJECTIVE: This paper examines the relationships between type of emotions experienced, emotion regulation strateg

This paper reviews and synthesizes functional imaging research that over the past decade has begun to offer new insights into the brain mechanisms underlying emotion regulation. Toward that end, the first section of the paper outlines a model of the processes and neural systems involved in emotion generation and regulation. The second section surveys recent research supporting and elaborating the model, focusing primarily on studies of the most commonly investigated strategy, which is known as reappraisal. At its core, the model specifies how prefrontal and cingulate control systems modulate a
