UNLABELLED: Pulmonary N-butyl-2-cyanoacrylate embolism is one of the potential risks associated with endoscopic obliteration of fundic gastric varices. Due to its uncommon nature, especially in children, no consensus has been proposed on its optimal management.
CASE REPORT: An 11-year-old boy with a longstanding history of lung- and liver fibrosis with portal hypertension causing haematemesis underwent endoscopic therapy for fundic varices. Shortly after injection of 0.5 ml of a N-butyl-2-cyanoacrylate (Histoacryl) and lipid soluble ethiodized oil (Lipiodol) mixture, he desaturated with secon

A 52-year-old male with right carotid body tumor underwent direct percutaneous glue (n-butylcyanoacrylate [NBCA]) embolization. Several hours later, he developed left hemiparesis from embolization of the polymerized glue cast. Migration of glue during percutaneous tumor embolization is presumed to occur only in the liquid state, which may lead to stroke or cranial nerve deficits. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of delayed glue embolization from a treated hypervascular tumor of the head and neck.

BACKGROUND: The use of stitches and staples for the closure of surgical wounds is associated with complications for both the surgeon and the patient. Histoacryl (butyl1-2cyanoacrylate glue) is widely used for wound closure in Accident and Emergency departments, in particular for facial and scalp wounds.
METHOD: We have used Histoacryl for closure of various surgical incisions in a series of 50 cases and assessed the cosmetic outcome at three to four weeks.
RESULTS: There were no wound related complications in the form of infection or dehiscence. In one case however, there was formation of sy

PURPOSE: To evaluate the role of tissue adhesive in the management of corneal thinning or perforation associated with active fungal keratitis.
DESIGN: Retrospective noncomparative interventional case series.
METHODS: Seventy-three eyes of 73 patients with microbiologically proven keratomycosis associated with thinning or perforation participated in the study. N-Butyl cyanoacrylate tissue adhesive (medical grade) and bandage contact lens were applied in addition to topical and systemic antifungal therapy. Our outcome measures included resolution of the infiltrate and preservation of the struc

BACKGROUND: Cyanoacrylate may form a barrier that prevents bacterial invasion when used in tissue. Because cyanoacrylate polymerizes within seconds on contact with aqueous media, it is used worldwide to arrest gastric variceal bleeding. The aim of this study was to determine the frequency of bacteremia after endoscopic cyanoacrylate injection for gastric variceal bleeding.
METHODS: Patients with cirrhosis who underwent endoscopic cyanoacrylate injection for gastric variceal bleeding were included. Patients with cirrhosis who underwent upper endoscopy for nonvariceal upper GI bleeding were rec

We report the use of an N-butyl-2-cyanoacrylate (NBCA) mixture for embolisation of six cases of carotid aneurysm after detachable balloons, and/or microcoils had been placed in the aneurysm. The mixture was injected into the aneurysm to prevent delayed bleeding or distal migration of the balloons, or microcoils. No subarachnoid haemorrhage or distal migration of the balloons or microcoils occurred up to 4.5 years after embolisation. Reflux of the NBCA mixture into the parent artery occurred in one patient, who had a neurological deficit which recovered in a month. NBCA mixture may be useful in

Red Dichromatic Imaging (RDI) is an advanced endoscopic technology designed to enhance the visualization of gastrointestinal bleeding. While RDI with Mode 2 has demonstrated significant efficacy in the detection and management of esophageal varices, its role in treating anastomotic varices remains underexplored. We report a challenging case of anastomotic variceal rupture, highlighting the advantages of RDI in precise localization and treatment. A woman in her 70 s with a history of pancreaticoduodenectomy for pancreatic head cancer and liver metastasis, presented with melena, fever, and suspe

Although it is widely accepted that uterine artery embolization (UAE) is an effective therapeutic strategy for postpartum hemorrhage (PPH), no consensus has been reached regarding the efficacy of UAE in patients with PPH with disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC). This single-center retrospective cohort study included patients treated with UAE using NBCA for PPH between 2010 and 2015. The patients were divided into DIC and non-DIC groups, according to the obstetrical DIC score and the overt DIC diagnostic criteria issued by the International Society of Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH),

PURPOSE AND METHODS: Superselective transvenous embolization (TVE) with liquid embolic agents is a new concept in treatment of vein of Galen aneurysmal malformations (VGAM). We performed ten sessions of TVE in VGAM patients with restricted transarterial access. In this paper, we assessed clinical and angiographic outcomes of the proposed treatment and discussed three different TVE techniques with regard to morphology of the shunt and outflow tract. Safety and avoidance-of-complication tips were also discussed.
RESULTS: Patient age ranged from 4 to 51 months. There were eight patients with cho

OBJECTIVE: The liquid embolic agent n-butyl cyanoacrylate (NBCA) is a tissue adhesive used as an immediate and permanent embolic agent when mixed with oil-based contrast medium. In this study, the preservation of fertility with TAE using NBCA for massive haemorrhage during pregnancy or the peripartum period and the utility of this therapy were investigated.
METHODS: Cases from January 2005 to October 2010 in which TAE was performed for massive haemorrhage in pregnant women, particularly during the peripartum period, were investigated.
RESULTS: TAE was performed in 27 pregnant women. The embo

BACKGROUND: Gastric variceal bleeding is associated with significant morbidity and mortality in patients with portal hypertension. N-butyl cyanoacrylate (NBC), mixed with lipiodol, has been shown to be effective in controlling bleeding, but is associated with the risk of distal embolization.
OBJECTIVE: To study the efficacy and safety of undiluted NBC in the management of gastric varices (GV).
DESIGN: Prospective cohort study.
SETTING: Single tertiary care center.
PATIENTS: 170 consecutive patients with GV.
INTERVENTION: Standardized technique of undiluted NBC injection for management of

Amnion leakage, infection and inflammation are the most important problems of intrauterine fetal surgery. This study aimed to determine the shear strength characteristics of fetal membranes attached with cyanoacrylate glue. Fresh amniochorionic membrane stripes (40x30 mm) were prepared after ten term elective cesarean section patients. Two stripes were attached with 5 mm overlapping and an increasing weight was applied until separation. Shear strength of the attached segment and resultant normal stresses developed in the membrane were calculated. Finally, corresponding intraluminal pressure th

The term "ectopic varices" is used to describe dilated portosystemic collateral veins in unusual locations other than the gastroesophageal region. We recently experienced a rare case of ectopic varices that developed in the gastroduodenal anastomosis after subtotal gastrectomy. A 70-year-old male with liver cirrhosis due to hepatitis C virus infection was admitted for hematemesis and tarry stool. He had received a subtotal gastrectomy with the Billroth-I method for gastric ulcer at 46 years of age. Although emergency endoscopy revealed esophageal and gastric fundal varices, there were no obvio

Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) is a rare hereditary connective tissue disorder. Patients with type IV EDS are prone to develop visceral pseudoaneurysms and aortic aneurysms. Surgical and endovascular interventions are fraught with complications and high morbidity. We present a case of a patient with type IV EDS who presented with a new psoas pseudoaneurysm arising from a hypertrophied lumbar artery which was treated with percutaneous embolization by using n-butyl cyanoacrylate glue and coils.
