This study aims to characterize current use, knowledge, and attitude toward ERAS protocols by academic craniofacial surgeons. Craniofacial surgeons were provided with electronic surveys. Electronic survey; Institutional tertiary surgeons. 102 cleft palate surgeons surveyed and 31 completed the survey (30.4%). None. Respondents rated their knowledge, use, and willingness to implement perioperative interventions modeled after adult ERAS protocols. Majority (67.7%) rated they were knowledgeable about ERAS. However, 61.3% "never use" a standardized protocol for cleft palate surgery. Only 3 ERAS el

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) is well documented in a number of surgical specialities. However, it remains an emerging concept in surgical head and neck cancer care. The purpose of this review is to appraise the current evidence investigating enhanced recovery in head and neck cancer, and explore areas for future clinical research.
RECENT FINDINGS: There were three key themes in enhanced recovery from the current head and neck cancer literature: early oral feeding, fistula closure and service delivery. This evidence is emerging and the quality of papers remains var…

BACKGROUND: Most hospitals in the United States are reimbursed for colectomy via a bundled payment based on the diagnosis-related group assigned. Enhanced recovery after surgery programs have been shown to improve the value of colorectal surgery, but little is known about the granular financial tradeoffs required at individual hospitals.
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is to analyze the index-hospitalization impact on specific cost centers associated with enhanced recovery after surgery implementation for diagnosis-related groups commonly assigned to patients undergoing colon resections.…

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate whether ERAS is feasible and beneficial in elderly patients undergoing VATS lobectomy for lung cancer.
METHODS: From February 2016 to March 2019, 182 patients were included into a 17-items ERAS pathway. Patients were divided into two groups according to age: Group A (< 75 years) 138 patients and Group B (≥ 75 years) 44 patients. End points were: length of stay (LoS), 30-day morbidity, 90-day mortality, 30-day re-admittance rate, and ERAS-score (number of ERAS objectives achieved).
RESULTS: Elderly patients had significantly more chronic renal failure (p = 0.039) and a

BACKGROUND: Enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) pathways are now implemented worldwide with strong evidence that adhesion to such protocol reduces medical complications, costs and hospital stay. This concept has been applied for pancreatic surgery since the first published guidelines in 2012. This study presents the updated ERAS recommendations for pancreatoduodenectomy (PD) based on the best available evidence and on expert consensus.
METHODS: A systematic literature search was conducted in three databases (Embase, Medline Ovid and Cochrane Library Wiley) for the 27 developed ERAS items. …

BACKGROUND: The Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) programme is an approach to the perioperative care of patients which aims to improve outcomes and speed up recovery after surgery. Although the evidence base appears strong for this programme, the implementation of ERAS has been slow. This study aimed to gain an understanding of the facilitating factors and challenges of implementing the programme with a view to providing additional contextual information to aid implementation. The study had a particular focus on the nutritional elements as these have been highlighted as important.

OBJECTIVE Over the past decade, Enhancing Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) programs have been implemented throughout the world across multiple surgical disciplines. However, to date no spinal surgery equivalent has been described. In this report the authors review the development and implementation of a "fast track" surgical approach for lumbar fusion. METHODS The first 42 consecutive cases in which patients were treated with the new surgical procedure were reviewed. A combination of endoscopic decompression, expandable cage deployment, and percutaneous screw placement were performed with liposom

PURPOSE: Implementation of Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) protocols in paediatric surgery remains limited, despite proven benefits in adults. The barriers to implementation and protocol modifications requires comprehensive detailing in paediatrics. We aimed to determine the practicality and safety of ERAS in paediatric laparoscopies at a tertiary-care center, addressing the context-specific barriers.
METHODS: This was a prospective, single-arm, preliminary study. One hundred thirty-six children, aged 2-14 years, undergoing laparoscopy were enrolled. ERAS elements were implemented peri…

Enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) is a multimodal perioperative care pathway designed to improve recovery, optimize patient outcomes, and enhance overall quality and satisfaction. Successful ERAS implementation requires continuous interprofessional collaboration among anesthesiologists, surgeons, nurses, nutritionists, physiatrists, and gerontologists, extending from preadmission to discharge. This consensus document, developed by the International Union of Angiology (IUA) Youth Committee and senior experts, outlines best practices for ERAS in vascular surgery. It synthesizes current evid…

In this article, we comment on the recent article by Fang et al. The study highlights that endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) offers advantages such as minimal incisions, shorter operative time, reduced bleeding, and faster patient recovery, demonstrating its strong alignment with the principles of enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS). From an anesthesiologic perspective, ESD contributes to decreased intraoperative stress, thereby reducing opioid requirements. Simultaneously, the shorter procedure duration and minimal tissue trauma mitigate the adverse effects of deep anesthesia on circu…

BACKGROUND: Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) pathways have been shown to be safe in patients undergoing hepatectomy. Due to cirrhosis-induced complications, specific or additional perioperative items might need to be implemented. This study systematically reviewed the literature to assess specific items to be included in future ERAS protocol for the perioperative management of cirrhotic patients undergoing hepatectomy.
METHODS: A systematic review was performed until September 2024. Evaluated items were prevention and management of perioperative ascites, encephalopathy prevention, perio…

The enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocol has been increasing implementation in gastrointestinal surgeries to optimize perioperative management, mitigate surgical stress responses, and accelerate patient recovery. Although opioid-based anesthesia effectively alleviates pain, it is associated with significant adverse effects, including postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV), respiratory depression, and intestinal paralysis, which can impeder early recovery. Opioid-free anesthesia (OFA) is designed to alleviate these concerns. This article examines the pharmacological agents and regi…

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary resection surgery causes severe postoperative pain and usually requires opioid-based analgesia, particularly in the early postoperative period. However, the administration of large amounts of opioids is associated with various adverse events. We hypothesized that patients who underwent pulmonary resection under an enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) program consumed fewer opioids than patients who received conventional treatment.
METHODS: A total of 2147 patients underwent pulmonary resection surgery between August 2019 and December 2020. Two surgeons (25%) at our ins…

The aim of this study was to determine whether implementing ERAS (Enhanced Recovery After Surgery) elements/protocols improves outcomes in orthognathic surgery (OGS) compared to conventional care. To achieve this, ERAS-specific perioperative elements were identified and literature on ERAS for OGS was systematically reviewed. Using PRISMA methodology and GRADE approach, 44 studies with 49 perioperative care elements (13 pre-, 15 intra-, 21 postoperative) were analyzed. While 39 studies focused on single elements, only five presented multimodal protocols, with three related to ERAS. Preoperative…
