Forecasting seasonal influenza epidemics with physics-informed neural networks.

Accurate epidemic forecasting is critical for informing public health decisions and timely interventions. While physics-informed neural networks have shown promise in various scientific domains, their potential application to real-time epidemic forecasting remains underexplored. Here, we present SIR-INN, a hybrid forecasting framework that integrates the mechanistic structure of the classical Susceptible-Infectious-Recovered (SIR) model into a neural network architecture. Trained once on synthetic epidemic scenarios, the model is able to generalize across epidemic conditions without retraining

Real-time responses to epidemics: A Reinforcement-Learning approach.

Open-loop optimal control applied to epidemic outbreaks is a valuable tool to develop control principles and inform future preparedness guidelines. A drawback of this approach is its assumption of complete knowledge of both transmission dynamics and the effects of policy measures. As a result, such methods lack responsiveness to real-time conditions, since they do not integrate feedback from the evolving epidemic state. Overcoming this requires a closed-loop approach. We propose a novel closed-loop method for real-time social distancing responses using a general Reinforcement Learning (RL)-bas

Spatiotemporal dynamics of cholera epidemics in Ethiopia: 2015-2021.

Since the onset of the seventh cholera pandemic, Ethiopia has been affected by recurrent epidemics. However, the epidemiology of cholera in this country remains poorly understood. This study aimed to describe cholera outbreak characteristics in Ethiopia from 2015 to 2021. During this period, Ethiopia experienced four epidemic waves. The first wave involved nationwide outbreaks during the second half of 2016 followed by outbreaks predominantly affecting Somali Region in 2017. The second wave primarily affected Tigray and Afar Regions. During the third wave, multiple smaller-scale outbreaks occu…

Applying a multi-strain dengue model to epidemics data.

Dengue disease transmission is a complex vector-borne disease, mainly due to the co-circulation of four serotypes of the virus. Mathematical … n is such that there is a reduced effect from DENV-3 to DENV-4 in comparison to no-cross effect for epidemics in Iquitos. Concerning San Juan epidemics, also comparing to no-cross effect, we also observed a reduced effect from the predominant serotype DENV-3 to both DENV-2 and DENV-1 epidemics neglecting the very small number of cases of DENV-4.

Micro-scale urbanization-based risk factors for dengue epidemics.

Dengue is one of the world's most rapidly spreading mosquito-borne viral diseases. As it is found mostly in urban and semi-urban areas, urbanization and associated human activities that affect the environment and larval habitats could become risk factors (e.g., lane width, conditions of street ditches) for the spread of dengue. However, there are currently no systematic studies of micro-scale urbanization-based risk factors for the spread of dengue epidemics. We describe the study area, two micro-scale environmental risk factors associated with urbanization, and meteorological data. Since the …

Military Epidemics, Then and Now: Smallpox and COVID-19.

We compared the COVID-19 experience in the first year of the current pandemic in the US with the smallpox experience of the 18th century, focusing on the US military but recognizing civilian and military populations are not separate and distinct. Despite the epidemics being separated by 21/2 centuries and with great advancements in technology having occurred over that time, we observed similarities which led us to several conclusions: • Infectious disease outbreaks will continue to occur and novel agents, naturally occurring or manipulated by humans, will threaten military and civilian populat…

Epidemics and pandemics: Effects on societal and organisational resilience.

The implications of a serious disease outbreak extend well beyond the disease itself. The levels of sickness and mortality, while important, can be quickly overshadowed by cascading risk implications that affect the global economy, threaten societal confidence, weaken the rule of law, present a risk to food security, and can lead to inter- and intra-state conflict. When multiple countries are concurrently impacted, the provision of life-saving and time-sensitive aid and humanitarian assistance can also be affected, leading to isolation and a domino effect of collapsing societies. When nations

The Causal Relationship between Eating Animals and Viral Epidemics.

For decades it has been known that infectious agents including pathogenic protozoans, bacteria, and viruses, adapted to a particular animal … prion diseases transmitted by eating animals. We suggest that the occurrence of cross-species viral epidemics can be substantially reduced by shifting to a more vegetarian diet and enforcing stricter laws that ban the slaughter and trade of wild and endangered species.

Disinformation and Epidemics: Anticipating the Next Phase of Biowarfare.

While biological warfare has classically been considered a threat requiring the presence of a distinct biological agent, we argue that in light of the rise of state-sponsored online disinformation campaigns we are approaching a fifth phase of biowarfare with a "cyber-bio" framing. By examining the rise of measles cases following disinformation campaigns connected to the US 2016 presidential elections, the rise of disinformation in the current novel coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic, and the impact of misinformation on public health interventions during the 2014-2016 West Africa and 2019-2020 D

Looking Sideways: Locating Epidemics and Erasures in South Asia.

While focused on the United States, Rosenberg's work on epidemics offers a nuanced framing that defines the stages and unfolding trajectories of epidemics. His writing is a good starting point to analyze the scope and challenges of epidemic historiography in South Asia. To redress its gaps, I have suggested an approach focused on writing histories of epidemics "sideways" and examined plague and influenza epidemics to situate the fluid politics of lived risks and marginality, moving away from dominant interpretations that have tried to characterize epidemics as finite and episodic.
