Multiobjective optimization to assess dengue control costs using a climate-dependent epidemiological model.

Arboviruses, diseases transmitted by arthropods, have become a significant challenge for public health managers. The World Health Organization highlights dengue as responsible for millions of infections worldwide annually. As there is no specific treatment for the disease and no free-of-charge vaccine for mass use in Brazil, the best option is the measures to combat the vector, the Aedes aegypti mosquito. Therefore, we proposed an epidemiological model dependent on temperature, precipitation, and humidity, considering symptomatic and asymptomatic dengue infections. Through computer simulations

Modeling mesothelioma risk factors from amphibole fiber dimensionality: mineralogical and epidemiological perspective.

Amphiboles are common rock-forming minerals but when they form asbestos, they are known carcinogens. Mesothelioma mortality among miners and millers per the unit of asbestiform amphibole exposure varies significantly across cohorts when asbestos exposure measurements are based on the membrane filter method. Because the cohorts were exposed to different occurrences of asbestiform amphibole, variance in mesothelioma potency (RM ) among cohorts is likely due to differences in exposure characteristics not reflected by the membrane filter method. In this paper using both linear and nonlinear models

COVID-19 mortality in an area of northeast Brazil: epidemiological characteristics and prospective spatiotemporal modelling.

This study aimed to analyse the spatial-temporal distribution of COVID-19 mortality in Sergipe, Northeast, Brazil. It was an ecological study utilising spatiotemporal analysis techniques that included all deaths confirmed by COVID-19 in Sergipe, from 2 April to 14 June 2020. Mortality rates were calculated per 100 000 inhabitants and the temporal trends were analysed using a segmented log-linear model. For spatial analysis, the Kernel estimator was used and the crude mortality rates were smoothed by the empirical Bayesian method. The space-time prospective scan statistics applied the Poisson's

Kernel-density estimation and approximate Bayesian computation for flexible epidemiological model fitting in Python.

Fitting complex models to epidemiological data is a challenging problem: methodologies can be inaccessible to all but specialists, there may be challenges in adequately describing uncertainty in model fitting, the complex models may take a long time to run, and it can be difficult to fully capture the heterogeneity in the data. We develop an adaptive approximate Bayesian computation scheme to fit a variety of epidemiologically relevant data with minimal hyper-parameter tuning by using an adaptive tolerance scheme. We implement a novel kernel density estimation scheme to capture both dispersed

Epidemiological dynamic modeling of human papillomavirus-related diseases to assess vaccination strategies in Argentina.

Our objective was to develop and test a dynamic simulation model of human papillomavirus (HPV)-related diseases to assess rational vaccination strategies in Argentina. A dynamic stochastic transmission model for hetero- and homosexual transmission of HPV oncogenic and low-risk oncogenic types among females and males was developed. The model included HPV transmission and vaccination, the natural history of HPV-related diseases, disease outcomes, and cervical cancer screening. Considering all cervical cancers, covered or not by the current quadrivalent vaccine, the existing coverage rate would l

Estimated Impact of Screening on Gonorrhea Epidemiology in the United States: Insights From a Mathematical Model.

UNLABELLED: The burden of gonorrhea infections in the United States is high. There are marked disparities by race/ethnicity and sexual orientation. We quantified the impact of screening and treatment on gonorrhea rates in the US population aged 15 to 39 years for the period 2000 to 2015 and estimated the impact that alternative screening strategies might have had over the same period. METHODS: We developed a national-level transmission model that divides the population by race/ethnicity, preferred gender of sex partners, age, gender, and sexual activity level. We compared our fitted model ("b

Development of outdoor exposure model of traffic-related air pollution for epidemiologic research in Japan.

We developed an exposure estimation model for an epidemiological study on the effect of traffic-related air pollutants on respiratory diseases. The model estimates annual average outdoor concentration of nitrogen oxides (NOx) and elemental carbon (EC). The model is composed of three nested plume dispersion type submodels treating different spatial scales from a few meters to tens of kilometers. The emissions from road traffic was estimated at high spatial resolution along the paths of roads taking into account the effects of individual building shape and traffic signals to secure accuracy near

Predicting the impact of long-term temperature changes on the epidemiology and control of schistosomiasis: a mechanistic model.

BACKGROUND: Many parasites of medical and veterinary importance are transmitted by cold-blooded intermediate hosts or vectors, the abundance of which will vary with ambient temperatures, potentially altering disease prevalence. In particular, if global climate change will increase mean ambient temperature in a region endemic with a human pathogen then it is possible that the incidence of disease will similarly increase. Here we examine this possibility by using a mathematical model to explore the effects of increasing long-term mean ambient temperature on the prevalence and abundance of the pa

A Bayesian approach to functional-based multilevel modeling of longitudinal data: applications to environmental epidemiology.

Flexible multilevel models are proposed to allow for cluster-specific smooth estimation of growth curves in a mixed-effects modeling format that includes subject-specific random effects on the growth parameters. Attention is then focused on models that examine between-cluster comparisons of the effects of an ecologic covariate of interest (e.g. air pollution) on nonlinear functionals of growth curves (e.g. maximum rate of growth). A Gibbs sampling approach is used to get posterior mean estimates of nonlinear functionals along with their uncertainty estimates. A second-stage ecologic random-eff

Cancer risk assessment for 1,3-butadiene: dose-response modeling from an epidemiological perspective.

The dose-response assessment of the association between 1,3-butadiene (BD) and leukemia mortality among workers in the North American synthetic rubber industry is explored. Analyses are based on the most recent University of Alabama at Birmingham epidemiological study and exposure estimation. The U.S. EPA Science Advisory Board recommendations of using the most recent data and giving consideration to peak exposures to BD have been followed. If cumulative BD ppm-years is to be used as the predictor of the leukemia rate ratio, then the performance of that predictor is statistically significantly

Neointimal Hyperplasia and Restenosis: Epidemiology, Pathophysiology, Animal Models, Clinical Features, Diagnosis, and Management.

In-stent restenosis (ISR) remains a major complication following vascular interventions, with neointimal hyperplasia representing a central pathological process that can adversely affect postoperative outcomes. Accumulating evidence indicates that neointimal hyperplasia is driven by vascular smooth muscle cell (VSMC) phenotypic transition, endothelial dysfunction, inflammation, and multiple forms of programmed cell death. Despite substantial advances, the underlying pathogenic mechanisms remain incompletely understood. This review comprehensively examines neointimal hyperplasia from the perspe

A systematic review of spatial epidemiological modeling approaches applied during the COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: A wide range of epidemiological modeling approaches have been applied to the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, which presents an opportunity to assess common approaches applied to specific research questions. Spatial models interrogate how heterogeneities and host movement dynamics influence local and regional patterns of disease, issues that were of great interest for understanding and controlling SARS-CoV-2. OBJECTIVE: Here, we present a systematic review of spatial epidemiological modeling approaches of SARS-CoV-2. We describe common themes and highlight unique strategies, providing a founda

The impact of ambiguously reported epidemiological parameters for infectious disease modelling and recommended best practices.

Epidemiological parameters characterise the natural history, transmission and severity of a pathogen and are necessary to understand the spread of infectious diseases. These parameters underpin our ability to quantify and respond to disease outbreaks. Parameters can be estimated from observations using a range of methods and are often reported in varied ways throughout the literature. These parameter estimates constitute essential inputs to infectious disease models used to quantify and project disease spread and burden, and assess intervention impact. Hence, any incompleteness or ambiguity in

Accounting for the long-distance transmission route: An epidemiological model of airborne disease transmission in hospitals.

Nosocomial transmission of respiratory infections poses a major threat to patient safety, while also affecting healthcare workers' (HCW) health, generating substantial costs for hospitals. These infections spread through both close-proximity interactions at short distances, and via aerosols that remain suspended in the air, enabling long-range transmission within a room when a susceptible individual is at a distance from an infectious individual. The relative contribution of each transmission route is pathogen-dependent. However, models distinguishing them remain scarce, limiting the design of

From wastewater to epidemiological insights: A systematic review of modeling strategies for infectious disease surveillance.

Wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) has emerged as a promising complementary tool in infectious diseases surveillance systems, offering real-time insights into the disease dynamics across various spatial coverage. By leveraging wastewater data, a wide range of epidemiological metrics can be estimated and predicted effectively. To date, diverse modeling approaches have been employed and evolved utilizing wastewater surveillance data, including compartmental models, regression-based models, and more flexible machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) techniques. In addition, other statistical

Modeling and analysis of fascioliasis disease with Katugampola fractional derivative: a memory-incorporated epidemiological approach.

Fascioliasis, a zoonotic disease, involves complex transmission across humans, animals, snails, and the environment. This study presents a fractional-order model using the Caputo-Katugampola derivative to capture memory effects in disease dynamics. The model, a system of nine fractional differential equations, is solved using the Chebyshev spectral method, with convergence ensured through rigorous analysis. We prove the existence and uniqueness of solutions via the Banach fixed-point theorem. Stability analysis derives the basic reproduction number [Formula: see text], assessing disease-free a

Estimating the relative importance of epidemiological and behavioural parameters for epidemic mpox transmission: a modelling study.

BACKGROUND: Many European countries experienced outbreaks of mpox in 2022, and there was an mpox outbreak in 2023 in the Democratic Republic of Congo. There were many apparent differences between these outbreaks and previous outbreaks of mpox; the recent outbreaks were observed in men who have sex with men after sexual encounters at common events, whereas earlier outbreaks were observed in a wider population with no identifiable link to sexual contacts. These apparent differences meant that data from previous outbreaks could not reliably be used to parametrise infectious disease models during
