Lactic acidosis and acute ethanol intoxication.

Ethanol intoxication has been widely reported as a cause of lactic acidosis. To determine the frequency and severity of ethanol-induced lactic acidosis, patients who presented to an emergency department with a clinical diagnosis of acute ethanol intoxication and a serum ethanol concentration of at least 100 mg/dL were studied. Arterial blood was sampled for lactate and blood gas determinations. A total of 60 patients (mean age, 41 years) were studied. Twenty-two patients sustained minor trauma. Ethanol concentrations ranged from 100 to 667 mg/dL (mean, 287 mg/dL). Lactate concentrations were a…

Ethanol inhibits neural cell-cell adhesion.

Gestational exposure to ethanol causes defects in neuronal migration, fasciculation, and synaptogenesis, developmental events that depend on the patterned expression and function of cell adhesion molecules (CAMs). Recombinant human osteogenic protein-1 (hOP-1) increases cell-cell adhesion and promotes cell clustering in proliferating neuroblastoma x glioma hybrid NG108-15 cells by strongly inducing N-CAM and L1. Here we show that concentrations of ethanol achieved during social drinking inhibit hOP-1-induced cell clustering without affecting cell proliferation, the induction and cell surface e…

Persistent altered mentation due to ethanol.

It has long been appreciated that the chronic abuse of alcohol may lead to a deterioration of intellect, personality, and behavior. Some of the ways in which this comes about are reasonably well established. The dementing diseases of Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome, pellagra, the nonfamilial form of hepatocerebral degeneration, Marchiafava-Bignami disease, and alcoholic dementia and their relationships to chronic alcoholism are discussed in this article.

Morphine-ethanol interaction on body temperature.

1. The interaction between ethanol and morphine on core temperature was investigated in Swiss Webster mice. 2. Morphine (2.5-30 mg/kg) and ethanol (0.5-3.0 mg/g) administered individually resulted in a dose dependent decrease in body temperature. 3. When both drugs were injected simultaneously, body temperature decreased less than it would be expected to if the effects were additive. 4. Naloxone antagonized the hypothermic effect of morphine, but the hypothermic effect of ethanol and that of the combination of morphine plus ethanol was only reversed with high doses of naloxone (10 mg/kg). 5. I…

Mechanism of ethanol induced hepatic injury.

Ethanol is hepatotoxic through redox changes produced by the NADH generated in its oxidation via the alcohol dehydrogenase pathway, which in turn affects the metabolism of lipids, carbohydrates, proteins and purines. Ethanol is also oxidized in liver microsomes by an ethanol-inducible cytochrome P-450 (P-450IIE1) which contributes to ethanol metabolism and tolerance, and activates xenobiotics to toxic radicals thereby explaining increased vulnerability of the heavy drinker to industrial solvents, anesthetic agents, commonly prescribed drugs, over-the-counter analgesics, chemical carcinogens an…

Percutaneous ethanol injection therapy of hepatoma.

Percutaneous ethanol injection (PEI) under ultrasound guidance is a new therapeutic possibility for patients with small hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). In our series, 35 patients with a total of 50 tumors were treated (tumor size 0.8-5.0 cm). No significant complications occurred after 502 sessions of ethanol injection. Thirty patients presented complete remission, as no evidence of residual HCC was revealed during the follow-up (mean 16 months). Five patients with lesions larger than 3.5 cm presented only partial remission. The survival curves at 1, 2, and 3 years (Kaplan Meier method) were 1…

Brain growth during ethanol-induced hypoplasia.

The inhibition of fetal brain growth resulting from in utero ethanol exposure may impair central nervous system (CNS) development and thereby result in mental retardation. Studies of ethanol-induced brain hypoplasia using chick embryos have shown that the early development of the chick is significantly growth inhibited by a single dose of ethanol (1.0 g/kg) given at the start of incubation (day 0). However, this level of ethanol exposure has been reported to have no effect on chick weight measured at hatching, suggesting that the weights of ethanol-treated chicks were regained during their dev…

Ethanol in sequestered hematomas: quantitative evaluation.

When death is delayed after injury, blood collected from sequestered hematomas (subdural, epidural, and intracerebral) may reflect the presence of ethanol in the circulating blood at the time of the injury. The authors have examined a series of cases in which such a situation occurred and in which a circulating blood ethanol level was determined shortly after the injury. In essentially all of the cases, the ethanol level in the hematoma was lower than that in the blood sample drawn shortly after the injury. In a group of cases where death occurred immediately, ethanol concentrations in sequest…

Renal tumor infarction with absolute ethanol.

Sixteen renal tumors were infarcted with intraarterial absolute ethanol. Renal tumor infarction was performed for one of three indications: for palliation of symptoms in patients with metastatic disease, as a preoperative measure to reduce blood loss during radical nephrectomy, or as a primary therapy in selected circumstances. In most cases, absolute ethanol was injected into the main renal artery through a balloon occlusion catheter. In all cases, ethanol produced effective infarction of the renal tumor. Only one complication developed, a perinephric abscess that developed several weeks afte…

Controlling product distributions from ethanol electrolysis.

Electrolysis of bioethanol in proton exchange fuel cells has the potential to become an important technology for sustainable production of green hydrogen and platform chemicals. However, the economic competitiveness of the process relative to water electrolysis is uncertain and will depend strongly on the demand for acetic acid, acetaldehyde, and other by-products. Controlling the product distribution is consequently a crucial element for development of ethanol electrolysis technology. This review focuses on the factors that determine product distributions and mechanistic models of the reactio…

Ethanol inhibits dorsomedial striatum acetylcholine release.

Alcohol use disorder (AUD) has severe adverse health and economic impacts totaling over $240 billion annually. Despite this, FDA approved treatments for AUD are limited. For this reason, further understanding of the neurobiological mechanisms in AUD is required for new treatments. An aspect of AUD involves deficits in behavioral flexibility that is similarly seen in animal models with depletion of dorsal striatal cholinergic interneurons (CINs). We found that acute EtOH (40 mM) inhibits the firing rate of dorsal striatal CINs, which are the primary source of acetylcholine (ACh) in the dorsal s

Polarization of ethanol under thermal fields.

Thermal fields induce thermal polarization and the buildup of a stationary net electric field in polar liquids. While the thermal polarization effect in water has been studied before, the coupling effects between heat and polarization fluxes remain unexplored in most polar fluids. Here, we investigate thermal transport and thermal polarization in liquid and supercritical ethanol through non-equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations using the TraPPE force field. We discuss the thermal conductivity of ethanol under various thermodynamic conditions and its correlation with other thermophysical p…

Accelerated ethanol elimination via the lungs.

Ethanol poisoning is endemic the world over. Morbidity and mortality depend on blood ethanol levels which in turn depend on the balance between its rates of absorption and clearance. Clearance of ethanol is mostly at a constant rate via enzymatic metabolism. We hypothesized that isocapnic hyperpnea (IH), previously shown to be effective in acceleration of clearance of vapour anesthetics and carbon monoxide, would also accelerate the clearance of ethanol. In this proof-of-concept pilot study, five healthy male subjects were brought to a mildly elevated blood ethanol concentration (~ 0.1%) and e…
