Smoking Cessation on Periodontal and Peri-Implant Health Status: A Systematic Review.

Since smoking is considered among the main risk factors for the onset and progression of periodontitis and peri-implantitis, the present systematic review aimed to evaluate the effect of smoking cessation on clinical, radiographic, and gingival crevicular periodontal parameters around natural teeth and dental implants in ex-smokers compared to current and non-smokers. The study protocol was developed based on the PRISMA guidelines, the research question was formulated according to the PICO model, and the literature search was conducted through PubMed/MEDLINE, Cochrane library, and BioMed Centr…

Tobacco smoking confers risk for severe COVID-19 unexplainable by pulmonary imaging.

BACKGROUND: COVID-19 is a new pneumonia. It has been hypothesized that tobacco smoking history may increase severity of this disease in the patients once infected by the underlying coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 because smoking and COVID-19 both cause lung damage. However, this hypothesis has not been tested. OBJECTIVE: Current study was designed to focus on smoking history in patients with COVID-19 and test this hypothesis that tobacco smoking history increases risk for severe COVID-19 by damaging the lungs. METHODS AND RESULTS: This was a single-site, retrospective case series study of clinical as

Pulmonary sarcoidosis presenting as hoarseness and mass lesion.

A 46-year male, ex-smoker presented with cough and hoarseness for 2-3 months. The CECT chest revealed a left upper lobe mass. BAL was negative for AFB, GeneXpert, and malignant cells. The bronchial biopsy showed granuloma with no caseation and infiltration of lymphoid cells. The ultrasound abdomen was normal. The patient was started on prednisolone 0.5 mg/kg. He improved clinic-radiologically. Ex-smoker, middle-aged man with hoarseness and mass lesion on CECT chest is highly suspicious of lung malignancy. Pulmonary sarcoidosis should be kept in the differential diagnosis of unexplained hoarsen

Effect of smoking cessation on the likelihood of pancreatitis and pancreatic cancer.

INTRODUCTION: Tobacco smoking is a major risk factor for various diseases worldwide, including pancreatic exocrine diseases such as pancreat … ood of pancreatitis and PC among 492855 participants. The subjects were divided into never smokers, ex-smokers, and current smokers. Using a multivariate-adjusted binary logistic regression model, we analyzed the relationship between different smoking conditions and the likelihood of pancreatitis and PC. Further, we studied the impact of smoking cessation on …

The association between tobacco smoking and systolic toe pressures in active foot ulceration.

Smoking may increase the risk of diabetic foot disease and ulceration. It does so by impairing glycaemic control and promoting the formation of advanced glycated end-products. Additionally, smoking is known to delay surgical wound healing and accelerate peripheral arterial disease. We aimed to determine whether toe pressures differed in smokers with a foot ulcer, when compared to non-smokers and ex-smokers, as well as ulcer outcomes at 12 months, among patients attending Blacktown Hospital High Risk Foot Service (HRFS). This study is a retrospective analysis of our prospectively collected clin…

Beta defensin-2 is reduced in central but not in distal airways of smoker COPD patients.

BACKGROUND: Altered pulmonary defenses in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) may promote distal airways bacterial colonization. The expression/activation of Toll Like receptors (TLR) and beta 2 defensin (HBD2) release by epithelial cells crucially affect pulmonary defence mechanisms. METHODS: The epithelial expression of TLR4 and of HBD2 was assessed in surgical specimens from current smokers COPD (s-COPD; n = 17), ex-smokers COPD (ex-s-COPD; n = 8), smokers without COPD (S; n = 12), and from non-smoker non-COPD subjects (C; n = 13). RESULTS: In distal airways, s-COPD highly expres…

Nonsmoking after simultaneous alcohol abstinence and smoking cessation program was associated with better drinking status outcome in Japanese alcohol-dependent men: A prospective follow-up study.

RESULTS: Nonsmoking during the first month af…

The highest ratios (those greater than 5.0) were observed for cor pulmonale, aortic aneurysm, emphysema and bronchitis, cancer of the pharynx, cancer of the esophagus, cancer of the larynx, and cancer of the lung an
