Exophiala dermatitidis Eye Infection: Case Report and Literature Review.

Exophiala endophthalmitis of exogenous origin is an exceptionally rare but severe ocular infection, characterized by diagnostic delays, limited therapeutic guidance, and frequently poor outcomes. Herein, we report one new case of an 80-year-old woman who presented with severe fungal keratitis progressing to endophthalmitis two years after an uncomplicated cataract surgery. The condition was initially misdiagnosed and treated with topical antibiotics and corticosteroids. By cultivation, microscopy, histopathological, and PCR analysis of the samples, Exophiala dermatitidis was identified as the

Fulminant Eye Infection in a Patient With Nephrotic Syndrome: A Case Report.

This case report presents the clinical course of a 53-year-old male farmer with nephrotic syndrome, specifically focal segmental glomerulosclerosis, who developed a fulminant eye infection. While receiving maintenance hemodialysis and immunosuppressive therapy, the patient presented with sudden onset redness, discharge, and decreased vision in his right eye. Initial management with topical antibiotics and steroids failed to halt the progression of the infection, leading to corneal perforation and iris prolapse within a few days. Despite the discontinuation of immunosuppressive medications and

Eye Infection with SARS-CoV-2 as a Route to Systemic Immunization?

UNLABELLED: Infectious diseases of the conjunctiva and cornea usually leave behind both broad local and systemic immunity. Case reports of SARS-CoV-2-positive conjunctivitis with subsequent systemic immunity suggest a new route of immunization preventing the primary infection of the airways. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 24 Syrian field hamsters were treated. In systematic animal experiments, we infected the eyes of n = 8 animals (group 1) and the airways of another n = 8 animals (group 2) with SARS-CoV-2 (Wuhan type); n = 8 hamsters served as controls (group 3). The weight development of

Correlations between infection patterns and eye damage in reactive arthritis.

The purpose of the study was to correlate the infectious patterns (urogenital, enteral) with ocular manifestations, such as conjunctivitis or acute anterior uveitis in reactive arthritis (ReA). The transversal, observational study was conducted in the Clinic of Rheumatology, University of Medicine and Pharmacy of Craiova, Romania, during the period 2012-2015, and included 112 patients. They were divided into three groups, as follows: Group I (52 ReA cases), Group II (30 other spondyloarthritis cases), Group III (40 osteoarthritis cases). Ophthalmologic screening was performed, together with th

[Pupillary paresis. A rare complication of Varicella zoster eye infection].

Pupillary paralysis and paresis of the peripheral facial nerve on the left side was found in a 68-year-old man with concussion and herpes zoster ophthalmicus on the left eye. Post mortem examination showed no sign of intracranial hemorrhage. The cause of death was pulmonary oedema and aspiration. The neurological signs were probably caused by herpes zoster affection of the oculomotor and optic nerves in association with the facial nerve paresis induced by zoster.

[Clinical etiological analysis of infective penetrating wounds of eyes in children].

Clinical laboratory analysis of penetrating wounds of the eyes in children in 1990-1995 showed a tendency to an increase in the incidence of wound infection, which increased as high as to make 16.6%. Opportunistic bacteria predominated in the etiological structure of wound infection agents. They caused grave suppurative complications in the presence of decreased antibacterial resistance of the organism.

Dry eye among males infected with the human immunodeficiency virus.

BACKGROUND: Keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS) has been reported as a potential ocular manifestation of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. This study was designed to estimate prevalence of dry eye among HIV-infected males and correlate subjective and objective findings with disease severity. METHODS: All subjects and controls completed the McMonnies Dry Eye Questionnaire (MDEQ) and underwent diagnostic testing for dry eye including biomicroscopic assessment of the anterior segment, lacrimation kinetics, sodium fluorescein break up time, and vital staining with sodium fluorescein and

On an infection of a human eye with Parastrongylus (= Angiostrongylus) sp. in Sri Lanka.

A metastrongyle worm extracted from the anterior chamber of the right eye of a patient in Sri Lanka belongs to the genus Parastrongylus and probably to a yet undescribed species, related to P. cantonensis well known to infect man. It is mostly a parasite of rodents, wandering in man and unadapted to this host. Evidence for this lack of adaptation are that the specimen is undergoing necrosis (teratological specimen) and is located in an organ with little immunological defences.

Retinal pigment epitheliopathy and neuroretinal degeneration in ascarid-infected eyes.

The generalized choroidal and retinal response to a focal nonreplicating infection of the eye with ascarid larvae was examined in an animal model. Intravitreal injection of Ascaris suum larvae in guinea pigs induced a diffuse eosinophilic choroiditis, retinal pigment epitheliopathy and neuroretinal degeneration, distant from focal reactions about larvae. As the choroiditis progressed, inflammatory cells separated the choriocapillaris from Bruch's membrane, and the endothelial cells lost their fenestrations. Focal disruption of the elastic and outer collagenous layers of Bruch's membrane occurr

Colletotrichum keratitis: An important fungal infection of nine human eyes.

Colletotrichum is a relatively uncommon cause of human infection. Previous findings on Colletotrichum keratitis were scarce, and most diagnoses were based on morphological distinction, perhaps underestimating the incidence of Colletotrichum species. This research describes the clinical characteristics and treatment outcomes of 9 cases of Colletotrichum keratitis discovered in our hospital using next-generation sequencing (NGS).We reviewed 78 patients with NGS-proven fungal keratitis between September 1, 2021 and May 31, 2023, 9 patients (11.5 %) were verified as infected with Colletotrichum sp

[Anterior eye segment damage in coronavirus infection (COVID-19)].

Conjunctivitis may appear as the first symptom of the coronavirus infection (COVID-19). In isolated cases, the lesion of the conjunctiva evokes a systemic infectious process. Currently, the conjunctiva is not considered as an area of long-term reproduction of coronavirus, and its damage is caused by hyperproduction of pro-inflammatory cytokines (especially IL-6); development of iridocyclitis and keratoconjunctivitis is also possible. Most often, local corticosteroids are used to treat these processes, although their use requires caution due to the risk of activating secondary infection (herpet

The eyes have it: influenza virus infection beyond the respiratory tract.

Avian and human influenza A viruses alike have shown a capacity to use the eye as a portal of entry and cause ocular disease in human beings. However, whereas influenza viruses generally represent a respiratory pathogen and only occasionally cause ocular complications, the H7 virus subtype stands alone in possessing an ocular tropism. Clarifying what confers such non-respiratory tropism to a respiratory virus will permit a greater ability to identify, treat, and prevent zoonotic human infection following ocular exposure to influenza viruses; especially those within the H7 subtype, which contin

Evaluation of sparfloxacin eye drop in the management of conjunctival and corneal infection.

Sparfloxacin 03% eye drop was evaluated in consecutive culture proven cases of conjunctivitis and corneal infection. Sparfloxacin 03% eye drop was found to provide 100% cure rate clInIcally as well as bacteriologically. This can be due to better ocular penetration and higher therapeutic index of sparfloxacin 03% eye drops. Sparfloxacin seems to be a better antibiotic for topical application for themanagement of external ocular Infections like conjunctivitis, keratitis and corneal ulcers.

[Express diagnosis of eye adenovirus infection by fluorescent antibody method].

Adenoviruses often cause epidemic keratoconjunctivitis. The infection is highly contagious, often leads to corneal opacities, and is therefore to be timely diagnosed and properly treated. The authors propose a method for rapid diagnosis of adenovirus infection based on examination of a scraping off the conjunctiva by indirect immunofluorescence with polyvalent fluorescent rabbit serum and offer recommendations on the use of this method. Using this technique, adenovirus antigen was detected in 14 (61%) out of 23 patients with acute follicular conjunctivitis and in 19 (95%) out of 20 patients wi
