Anatomical considerations to prevent facial nerve injury.

Injury to the facial nerve during a face lift is a relatively rare but serious complication. A large body of literature has been dedicated toward bettering the understanding of the anatomical course of the facial nerve and the relative danger zones. Most of these prior reports, however, have focused on identifying the location of facial nerve branches based on their trajectory mostly in two dimensions and rarely in three dimensions. Unfortunately, the exact location of the facial nerve relative to palpable or visible facial landmarks is quite variable. Although the precise location of facial n

Facial nerve injury during external dacryocystorhinostomy.

OBJECTIVE: To describe weakness of the orbicularis oculi muscle after external dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR) and propose an anatomic explanation for the complication. DESIGN: Retrospective, observational study. PARTICIPANTS: Sixteen patients (13 female, 3 male) with a mean age of 60 years (median, 61 years; range, 34-85 years). METHODS: A retrospective chart review was performed of consecutive patients who had nasolacrimal duct obstruction repair by external DCR. Patients were identified who developed postoperative orbicularis oculi muscle weakness that manifested as hypometric blink or lagop

Facial reconstruction after a complicated gunshot injury.

Facial gunshot injuries are unusual and complicated clinical entities. Because of the mechanism of injury, early aggressive primary reconstruction might not be ideal. Initial conservative management followed by staged secondary reconstruction could be performed to obtain satisfactory functional and aesthetic results. Reconstruction of the cranio-maxillo-facial deformities requires a multi-disciplinary approach, the same way as for patients with cleft lip/palate deformities. We present a male patient with severe facial gunshot injuries. A team approach revealed maxilla recession, dental maloccl

Experimental studies on traumatic facial nerve injury.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the outcome of different injuries to the facial nerve. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Six patterns of injuries (exposure, compression, crushing, stretching, division and post-division anastomosis) were produced in the buccal branches of the facial nerve in 60 rabbits. Electroneuronography (ENoG) and histology at definite time were used to evaluate the results. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: Exposure and compression injuries produced a neuropraxic injury and rapid recovery. Crushing and stretching injuries resulted in axonotmesis and whilst complete rec

Headache and facial pain associated with head injury.

Head injury frequently results in headache and at times facial pain. Controversy concerns the relationship of injury in the head and neck area to chronic headache, particularly when no apparent structural traumatic lesion is demonstrable. Neuropathological studies suggest with concussion there is neuronal injury without gross pathology. Closed head injury of seemingly minor degrees may lead to chronic symptoms, often stereotypic, similar to those following concussion, and they have been described by the term post head trauma syndrome or postconcussional syndrome. Headache after head injury in

The effects of nasomaxillary injury on future facial growth.

The appearance of results of injury to the columella, the nasal septum, and the nasal bones, in particular, has been well described. Anomalies of the maxilla and global facial balance secondary to nasomaxillary injury are less well known. Three cases involving children, aged 11, 14, and 17 years, who had suffered nasomaxillary injury at least 8 years earlier as a result of physical beating, were studied with the use of photographs and architectural craniofacial lateral cephalometric radiographic analysis. The architectural craniofacial analysis of Delaire produced a graphic representation of t

A silent but lethal injury associated with facial trauma.

Without a careful evaluation of all patients with major facial injuries and a thorough search for possible associated injuries, traumatic transection of the aorta may be easily missed, if the patient survives the first 24 hours after injury. Any patient subjected to sudden deceleration injury, particularly following automobile or motorcycle accidents, should be evaluated carefully for traumatic aortic rupture. Patients with associated chest trauma should have chest x-rays in the emergency room, and repeat chest films several hours later should be obtained to identify subsequent development of …

Delayed facial palsy after head injury.

Where facial palsy follows head injury after many days, the mechanism is not clear, and there has been no detailed study on this condition. In this prospective study, an attempt is made to estimate this complication of head injury, and to study its pathogenesis, natural history, prognosis, and sequelae which differ markedly from Bell's palsy. It has a much worse prognosis and so surgical decompression should be considered early in this condition.

Facial injury by mercury from a broken thermometer.

The case of a 2-year-old girl with a facial soft-tissue injury from an accident with a mercury thermometer is presented. All tissues containing droplets of metallic mercury should be removed immediately and careful examination for signs of mercury poisoning should be conducted over the long term.

Chemical burns: pathophysiology and therapeutic protocols-do cervico-facial injuries pose specific challenges?

Chemical burns, though relatively rare, present significant diagnostic and therapeutic challenges due to their complex pathophysiology and the need for specialized care. A retrospective study was conducted, examining the characteristics, treatment, and outcomes of 33 patients with chemical burns admitted to our burn center for 8 years, representing 4.39% of all burn cases. Among them, 15 patients (45.45%) had chemical burns on the face and neck. The majority of these patients were men, with a relatively younger average age, and a significant proportion had work-related accidents. The burned su

Time to wound closure in facial soft tissue injuries following road traffic accidents.

The 6-hour (6-h) time to wound closure was a controversial issue as studies have shown that time was not a substantial factor. Wounds in the face are often considered to have a lower infection risk. Despite this, the cause of injury was not extensively discussed in relation to this context. The primary objective was to investigate the association between the 6-h time to wound closure and wound complications following emergency management of facial soft tissue injuries (STIs). Additionally, the secondary objective was to explore other factors contributing to wound complications. A retrospective
